Great North Run 2025 medal unveiled in collaboration with Newcastle artist

Yahoo13 hours ago
The Great North Run's 2025 medal has been revealed, inspired by art and poetry.
Unveiled on August 14, the medal is the result of a collaboration between the event and Newcastle-based 'art of illusion' artist Howard Lee.
Mr Lee is known for his hyper-realistic 'Real vs Fake' style and his work has gained global recognition through social media and television.
The medal design features the Tyne Bridge, alongside lines from the poem We are the Great North Run, written by George Caulkin, North East sports correspondent for The Athletic and The New York Times.

The poem has been adopted as the theme for the 2025 event.
Howard Lee, artist, said: "Because my work is viewed in video form, there are a lot of ways to experiment with creating illusions or playing around with perception.
"Realism is already a type of artistic illusion but the video creates a certain way of seeing it, adding another level for the audience.
"The starting point for this type of artwork is almost always to find a range of art materials that can be blended to accurately match the colours in the real piece.

"The depiction of the Tyne Bridge and surrounding poetry took quite a lot of colour mixing.
"I feel very privileged to have been involved in the process of revealing this year's medal, it really is quite a striking design."
Mr Lee has lived in Newcastle for nearly 20 years after moving to the region when his wife secured a job in the North East.
He said: "We drove up here not knowing what to expect and we never left because this region has everything you would want.
"It has everything really – the people, the atmosphere, the culture, landscape, art, architecture, food.
"I feel very lucky to have found myself here."
The Great North Run has been a fixture in the North East for 44 years, celebrating 'ordinary people doing extraordinary things'.
This year's event will take place on September 7, with 60,000 runners expected to take on the 13.1-mile course from Newcastle to South Shields.
More than 200,000 spectators are expected to line the streets to cheer on the runners.
The 2025 AJ Bell Great North Run will be broadcast live on BBC One and will feature elite men's, women's, and wheelchair races.
Among the competitors will be Olympian and Great Run Ambassador Eilish McColgan, who has confirmed her participation.
Organisers say the medal is a celebration of the spirit of the North East and the collective achievement of everyone who takes part.
A spokesman for the Great North Run said: "Every one of them a story.
"But together, we are the Great North Run."
The medal reveal video is available to view on Instagram at @great_run.
Runners and fans can also find out more about this year's event and the We Are The Great North Run campaign on the official website.
Registration is now open to be notified about the 2026 ballot.

Tottenham dealt major injury blow as James Maddison worst fears realised

Tottenham have been dealt a major blow after scans confirmed James Maddison has suffered a serious knee injury. Maddison ruptured his ACL in last week's pre-season friendly against Newcastle and Spurs have confirmed the midfielder will undergo surgery . Spurs have not put a timeframe on how long Maddison will be out but he is set for a long spell on the sidelines, in a huge setback for Spurs ahead of the new season. A Spurs statement read: We can confirm that James Maddison will undergo surgery for a ruptured Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee. 'The 28-year-old midfielder suffered the injury during our pre-season friendly against Newcastle United on Sunday in Seoul. 'His surgery will take place in the coming days and, following that, James will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team. 'Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur wishes James a full and speedy recovery. We will be supporting him every step of the way.' Thomas Frank was already short of creative players, with Dejan Kulusevski out for the start of the season and after Spurs missed out on Morgan Gibbs-White. Maddison's injury could force Spurs into the transfer market. The 28-year-old pulled up just minutes after coming on against Newcastle and collapsed to the pitch with his head in his hands. He is now expected the miss the majority of the forthcoming season. Maddison scored 12 goals in 45 appearances for Spurs last season. His injury also surely ends any hopes he had of forcing his way back into the England squad for the World Cup.

Want to leave Man City? Guardiola tells Savinho and Ederson to 'knock on my door'

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Pep Guardiola said if Brazil internationals Savinho and Ederson want to leave Manchester City they should just come ask. The City manager addressed speculation about the players' future on Friday, a day before the team opens its Premier League campaign at Wolverhampton. 'If they want to leave they will come to me. I'm working with them because I am here. If they want to leave, they will knock on my door,' Guardiola. The 21-year-old Savinho joined City last summer on a $45 million transfer and signed a five-year contract but has been linked to Tottenham, which has seen Son Heung-min leave this offseason and James Maddison go down with an ACL tear. Savinho, a winger, scored three goals in 48 total appearances last season. 'I don't know,' Guardiola responded when asked if Savinho would stay. 'Tottenham in that case or any other club (that) wants a player should call the club, right?' Guardiola insisted that he hopes Savinho stays. 'I'm only concerned right now today that Savinho will be with us until the rest of the season and hopefully for many, many years because with 21 years old with the potential that he has ... plays lots of minutes, he has to improve in the final decisions ... but he's an extraordinary player,' Guardiola said. Still, Savinho won't travel with the team for the season opener because of an unspecified injury from last week's friendly in Sicily. 'Savinho is injured, sorry I didn't remember,' Guardiola said. 'He's injured from Palermo. Had a problem. A few weeks he will be out.' The 31-year-old Ederson has been Guardiola's first-choice goalkeeper since arriving from Benfica in 2017. He's helped City win six league titles, among other trophies. British press reports say Turkish club Galatasaray wants to sign him. 'Ederson didn't come to me and say 'I want to leave, I have an offer,' so all the players (who) are here are our players, and I work with them. What's going to happen (in the transfer window) nobody knows." Guardiola added: 'In the end, as always, the desire of the players (is) above everything.' ___ AP soccer:
