Driver surrenders at police station after fatal accident
MELAKA: Police have arrested the driver of a four-wheel drive (4WD) after he surrendered himself at the Melaka Tengah police headquarters at 12.50pm, Saturday some 13 hours after a fatal hit-and-run incident where he did not stop to render assistance to two motorcyclists.
In Friday's (April 25) accident, the 50-year-old suspect was driving his Mitsubishi Triton, which rear-ended a motorcycle, fatally wounding the pillion rider at the traffic lights on the Alor Gajah-Melaka Tengah-Jasin Highway (Lebuh AMJ) at Balai Panjang here, said Melaka Tengah police chief ACP Christopher Patit.
"The suspect's blood was taken for a toxicology test to detect any presence of alcohol in addition to a urine test.
"The suspect has been detained under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 (for reckless driving) and a remand application will be made at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate's Court on Sunday (April 27)," he said in a statement on Saturday (April 26).
He said that in the accident which occurred at about 11pm, the victim Roslinah Sinan, 53, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle ridden by her husband Hisham Omar, 57, died at the scene from severe head injuries.
He said Hisham, who sustained severe injuries to his head and body, was taken to Melaka Hospital for treatment, while the 4WD driver was unhurt and fled the scene after the collision.
Christopher also stated that both victims, who were on a motorcycle, were on their way from their Taman Angkasa Nuri home in Durian Tunggal to a restaurant in Balai Panjang.
He added that when the motorcycle had stopped at the traffic light junction, it was rear-ended by the 4WD vehicle, which was coming from Malim heading towards Bachang. - Bernama

Teen rider killed after crashing into lorry on DUKE
KUALA LUMPUR: A 17-year-old motorcyclist was killed after crashing into the rear of a lorry along the Duta-Ulu Kelang Expressway (DUKE) early Friday morning. Gombak district police chief Assistant Commissioner Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said the accident occurred at Km4 of the highway, heading from Kuala Lumpur towards Gombak, near the Taman Samudera Selatan exit. Police were alerted to the incident at 9.23pm the same day. "Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim was riding from Sentul to Sri Gombak at around 4.30am when he is believed to have collided with the rear of a lorry. The make and registration number of the vehicle have yet to be identified. "The impact of the crash caused the victim to suffer internal injuries. He was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at the Emergency and Trauma Department of Kuala Lumpur Hospital," he said in a statement. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. Aruz Driver: Fight with Wife Caused Wrong-Way Driving
A Perodua Aruz driver claimed that an argument with his wife caused him to mistakenly enter the wrong lane and drive against traffic flow along Jalan Skudai-Pantai Lido in Johor Bahru yesterday. Johor Bahru South district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat stated that the incident went viral on social media before being detected by authorities at 9.10pm last night. According to him, the 34-year-old driver was arrested after surrendering himself at the Johor Bahru South Traffic police station on the same day. 'Investigations revealed the incident occurred at 1.41am yesterday, when a blue Perodua Aruz was spotted driving against the traffic flow on the said route. 'The complainant informed that during the incident, he had a disagreement with his wife which caused him to lose driving focus and enter the opposite lane,' he told Kosmo, today. Raub added that urine screening tests found the driver was free from any drug and alcohol abuse.
