'I cannot accept this,' says grieving father of woman murdered by husband
TANGKAK: The anguished cry of a father echoed through a home in Taman Cahaya, Bukit Gambir, last night as he struggled to come to terms with the death of his 34-year-old daughter, who was allegedly murdered by her husband. "Perhaps the pain would have been bearable if my daughter had died from an illness. "But this… she died in such a manner. "I do not know how to accept or come to terms with this," said the grieving 74-year-old Junus Kassim after seeing his daughter's face when her body arrived at his home around 6.45pm for the burial ceremony. Several family members rushed to console as Junus grappled with accepting the fate that had befallen his daughter. The victim's mother, Fatimah Seman, 63, also wept when given the opportunity to see the face of the victim, who is the second among four siblings, for the final time. Tears flowed during the burial ceremony as the body was brought to the Kampung Durian Chondong Muslim cemetery to be laid to rest. Earlier, the hearse transporting the body arrived from Melaka Hospital after the post-mortem was completed earlier in the morning. Around 200 people, including family members, close relatives and villagers, gathered at the house compound to receive the body. A sombre atmosphere filled the air as the body was brought into the house and funeral prayers were performed, joined by more than 50 congregants. The victim was laid to rest at 8pm last night. It was reported that the 32-year-old suspect had allegedly murdered the victim and set fire to several vehicles at his in-laws' house before he had surrendered himself to the police. The suspect had walked into the Bukit Gambir police station at 7am on June 3 and reportedly told the police had slashed his wife and committed arson. He had been remanded for seven day s to facilitate investigations into the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder and Section 435 of the same Code for committing mischief.

Construction of Melaka Hospital's Women and Children's Block on track
MELAKA: The construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospital is on track despite delays caused by a complicated and lengthy technical process involving various government agencies. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said that due to the delay, the cost of the project has risen to RM723mil, from the original cost of RM696mil. "This is a federal government project under the Health Ministry and, certainly, the state government wants this project to be completed within the stipulated period, even earlier if possible, but it must be understood that there are many procedures that need to be followed and passed. "Currently, the Health Works branch of the Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters is finalising the Need Statement for this project through a workshop that will be held today and thereafter, the pre-tender process will commence as soon as the Need Statement is finalised," he said when met by reporters at Seri Negeri here on Tuesday (May 20). He said this in response to a statement by the Opposition Leader in the State Assembly, Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub, on the construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospitaln and the need to expedite the project due to the congestion at the Melaka Hospital, where a child who was allegedly delayed in receiving treatment suffered a seizure. Ngwe said the state government also wants the project, which is expected to start next year and scheduled for completion in 2031, to run smoothly immediately because it does not want the allocation approved in the 2023 Budget in October 2022 to be withdrawn. "We hope that this project can be completed within five years, but it's important to explain that several factors have contributed to the delays. These include the need to demolish the existing building, which is the Nursing Training Institute, road widening works, the land acquisition process, and obtaining various technical approvals from the Public Works Department, the Ministry of Health and related agencies,' he said. He said each stage and process requires time, including the two-phase tender exercise, as the government is committed to appointing a contractor with proven capability and quality to implement the project. - Bernama

Melaka health dept to probe claim baby left untreated for 11 hours
Executive councillor Ngwe Hee Sem said he has directed the Melaka health department to investigate the case which happened at the Melaka Hospital on Saturday. PETALING JAYA : The Melaka health department has been ordered to investigate a claim a 22-month-old girl was left untreated for 11 hours at the Melaka Hospital, despite suffering from high fever and eventually a 'seizure'. State executive councillor for health Ngwe Hee Sem said he is aware of the case and has called for an immediate and thorough investigation, Bernama reported. 'I have contacted the Melaka health director (Dr Ruzita Mustaffa) as well as the top management of Melaka Hospital and asked them to investigate the case. 'At the same time, I urge the public not to make assumptions until the matter is resolved,' he was quoted as saying. A 13-minute video showing the child crying in pain went viral on social media, prompting outrage and calls for accountability. In a Facebook post, the baby's mother, Siti Aishah Rahim, 27, said she and her mother rushed the child, Siti Farha Adelia Mohd Firdaus, to the hospital's emergency and trauma department at 2.30pm on Saturday after she developed a high fever. Siti Aishah claimed that the hospital staff only took a blood sample before asking them to wait. The child's temperature reportedly rose to 40°C and she was left untreated until she suffered a seizure at about 1am the next day, it was claimed. 'I kept asking questions, but we were told to wait, until my baby started having a seizure at 1am and her body went stiff,' she said. The child was later moved from the green zone to the yellow zone as her condition deteriorated, and doctors eventually stabilised her.
