Woman jailed 9 months for ending 5-month pregnancy with abortion pill

MELAKA: A cafe worker was sentenced to nine months in jail by the Ayer Keroh magistrate's court today for causing the death of her five-month-old fetus.
Magistrate Sharda Sheinha Mohd Suleiman sentenced Norazzeti Azima Awang Long, 21, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
The court ordered the sentence to start from the date of her arrest on May 19.
According to the charge, she took the abortion drug misoprostol in a condominium bathroom about 10pm on May 12 to terminate her pregnancy.
She allegedly purchased the drug via TikTok for RM600.
The offence is punishable under Section 315 of the Penal Code, which carries up to 10 years in jail, a fine or both upon conviction.
According to the facts of the case, the accused was taken to Melaka Hospital due to swollen breasts.
She admitted to having a miscarriage after almost six months of pregnancy after taking misoprostol.
She revealed that the fetus was given to a male friend for burial.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif, while the accused was represented by lawyer Muhammad Izzuddin Ab Malek from the National Legal Aid Foundation.

He said that investigations found the suspects had no prior records, and the urine tests for all came back negative. He added that the five suspects have been remanded for seven days starting today, with the case being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
