Construction of Melaka Hospital's Women and Children's Block on track
MELAKA: The construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospital is on track despite delays caused by a complicated and lengthy technical process involving various government agencies.
State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said that due to the delay, the cost of the project has risen to RM723mil, from the original cost of RM696mil.
"This is a federal government project under the Health Ministry and, certainly, the state government wants this project to be completed within the stipulated period, even earlier if possible, but it must be understood that there are many procedures that need to be followed and passed.
"Currently, the Health Works branch of the Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters is finalising the Need Statement for this project through a workshop that will be held today and thereafter, the pre-tender process will commence as soon as the Need Statement is finalised," he said when met by reporters at Seri Negeri here on Tuesday (May 20).
He said this in response to a statement by the Opposition Leader in the State Assembly, Dr Mohd Yadzil Yaakub, on the construction of the Women and Children's Block of the Melaka Hospitaln and the need to expedite the project due to the congestion at the Melaka Hospital, where a child who was allegedly delayed in receiving treatment suffered a seizure.
Ngwe said the state government also wants the project, which is expected to start next year and scheduled for completion in 2031, to run smoothly immediately because it does not want the allocation approved in the 2023 Budget in October 2022 to be withdrawn.
"We hope that this project can be completed within five years, but it's important to explain that several factors have contributed to the delays. These include the need to demolish the existing building, which is the Nursing Training Institute, road widening works, the land acquisition process, and obtaining various technical approvals from the Public Works Department, the Ministry of Health and related agencies,' he said.
He said each stage and process requires time, including the two-phase tender exercise, as the government is committed to appointing a contractor with proven capability and quality to implement the project. - Bernama

Melaka Covid-19 cases surge by over 20pct
AYER KEROH: Melaka recorded a surge in Covid-19 cases, with a rise of more than 20 per cent in new infections during Epidemiological Week 23 (ME 23), from June 1 to 7. State Health, Human Resources and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem said a total of 93 new cases were reported, up from 77 the previous week. He said the increase brought the cumulative number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Melaka to 164,821. "However, no deaths or admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU) have been reported. "As of Saturday, there were also no active clusters recorded either within or outside the state," he said in a statement today. Ngwe said as of ME 23, Melaka had recorded 1,545 cases of Covid-19 variants categorised as Variants of Concern (VOC) and Variants of Interest (VOI). This included seven cases of the Beta VOC, 144 Delta VOC cases, 1,276 Omicron VOC cases, and 79 VOI cases. "The State Health Department will continue to monitor the transmission of the virus, and preventive and control measures will be carried out continuously with the support and cooperation of various agencies," he said.

Penang Hospital's RM758m development projects progressing as planned, set for completion by 2029, says state exco
GEORGE TOWN, May 30 — The three development projects at Penang Hospital costing a total RM758 million are on track for completion between 2026 and 2029. Penang Health, Youth and Sports committee chairman Gooi Zi Sen said the construction of the RM307 million Women and Children's Block is now 34.35 per cent complete and is expected to be completed by January 2026. 'The project includes a 12-storey car park and an eight-storey hospital building with a capacity of 329 beds,' he said when visiting the construction site today. The block will consist of eight main services, including outpatient and inpatient service, diagnostic and treatment, medical support, administrative offices, medical staff services and public amenities such as a cafeteria, a playground and a surau. He said the second project, a new Stem Cell Centre Block, costs about RM23 million and is expected to be completed in March 2027. He said the project is being carried out under the supervision of the Public Works Department. 'The scope of the project includes upgrading transplant services, such as an Allogeneic bone marrow transplant, an Apheresis unit and a stem cell laboratory,' he said. He said the block will include 25 car park lots, a connecting overhead bridge and other auxiliary buildings. The third project is the RM428 million Specialist Clinic and Ward, which is expected to be completed by May 2029. 'The scope of the project includes a 14-storey building with 500 parking spaces, specialist clinics and a ward with a 216-bed capacity,' he said. All three projects are funded by Putrajaya under the 10th and 11th Malaysia Plans. Gooi thanked the federal government for approving the allocation for the projects as it will improve the infrastructure and facilities at Penang Hospital. 'These projects will strengthen the state's healthcare service system and will improve the quality of treatment for patients,' he said. He said the state government will continue to strengthen the public health system and ensure access to treatment for all.

Kelantan records increase in diabetes, high cholesterol cases
KOTA BHARU: Cases of diabetes and high cholesterol levels among the people in Kelantan recorded an increase exceeding the national average indicator, said Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad. He said that based on the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, 16.3 per cent of the people in Kelantan suffered from diabetes, an increase of 0.7 per cent compared to the national average indicator of 15.6 per cent. 'High cholesterol levels also showed an increase among the people in Kelantan, recording 34.9 per cent. The national average indicator is 33.3 per cent,' he said when opening the Kelantan Wellness Hub Open Day in Pengkalan Chepa, here today, which was also attended by State Health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin. He said 51.6 per cent of the people in Kelantan (national average is 54.4 per cent) are categorised as overweight or obese, while for high blood pressure, it was 27.9 per cent (national average is 9.2 per cent). He described the findings on Kelantan in the BNHMS 2023 as worrying, although the state recorded better performance in several indicators compared to the national level. 'To address this, the ministry has introduced and implemented the 'Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat' (ANMS) as a platform to mobilise the culture of a healthy lifestyle,' he said.
