'Scary' David Beckham incident that left Martin Brundle shaken up at F1 race

Daily Mirrora day ago

Martin Brundle has interviewed a host of celebrities during his time on the F1 grid, but there have been few incidents that have left him feeling as shaken as when he tried to talk to David Beckham
Martin Brundle has opened up about a "scary" encounter he had when he tried to interview David Beckham during one of his famous F1 grid walks. The Sky Sports commentator has been a part of the motorsport world for over four decades.
As both a driver and broadcaster, Brundle is a respected figure in the sport. However, the current generation of F1 fans may best know him for his pre-race grid walks, where he chats with celebrities and other stars on the grid.

Over the years, Brundle has had engaging conversations with some of the biggest names in showbiz and sport on the grid. However, not all have been keen to chat with the 66-year-old, leading to some less-than-stellar interviews.

One such instance involved Manchester United legend Beckham, whom Brundle bumped into at the Miami Grand Prix in 2022. The ex-England skipper, who is now the co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami, was attending his local Grand Prix.
After spotting him, Brundle made a beeline to grab a quick word with the football superstar. Although he managed to briefly discuss F1's presence in Florida, Brundle later admitted that he was not sure why he bothered.
However, it appears he was more determined to speak to the former free-kick specialist, having failed to get a word with him at the Qatar GP that year. At the time, Beckham had accepted a multi-million-pound deal to be a paid ambassador for the Qatar World Cup.
Beckham was on the grid at the same time as Brundle, but he was far from alone. The Sky Sports reporter told SPORTbible:"I was in Qatar trying to speak to David Beckham and there were two guys man-marking me.
"Wherever I went, they were just looking at me! They did not want me to talk to David Beckham on that grid; the World Cup was coming up, wasn't it? That was a little bit scary.

"They were literally on the grid to stop me. So, I went round the back of [Lewis] Hamilton's car, and they went round the front and kind of just looked at me. That was a little bit odd."
In a subsequent interview with GQ Magazine, Brundle was notably critical about his brief interaction with Beckham. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the grid walk and numerous celebrity guests, he maintained that it is still his domain.
Brundle said: "I was pretty determined to speak to him. And then when I did, I thought, 'I don't know why I bothered', basically.
"I didn't feel good about it, particularly. I don't like bothering people. If they don't want to talk to you, they don't want to talk to you. There are plenty of people who do.
"You've got to remember I've been on a F1 grid for 38 years, well over half the life of Formula 1. I've been to well over half of the grands prix in the history of Formula 1, so I feel pretty comfortable in that space – I feel it's my territory."

Man Utd transfer target pictured in shirt as Ruben Amorim waits on second deal

Manchester United started the summer with some quick transfer business by signing Matheus Cunha but are looking to add more quality to their forward line in the cooming weeks Malick Fofana has been pictured wearing a Manchester United shirt after emerging as a target for the Red Devils. The young Lyon winger has been linked with United, Chelsea and Liverpool already this summer. But, while highlighting his work before pre-season is underway, Fofana has issued an update that sees him in United colours. Posting on his Instagram, the 20-year-old winger has uploaded photographs of him training wearing United's third kit from 2022/23. ‌ The luminous green shirt displays Marcus Rashford's name and number on the back. Though any prospect of Fofana playing alongside the England international appears unlikely with Rashord expected to depart this summer. ‌ Reports in France suggest Fofana's future could lie elsewhere before Lyon return to training on July 7. The Belgian is said to be valued higher than Rayan Cherki, who joined Manchester City for £34million, and Chelsea have already made contract with the French club. An exit for Fofana could now be more likely after Lyon were relegated Ligue 2 on after failing to provide financial guarantees to the game's watchdog. The ex-Gent ace scored five goals and provided four assists in 29 games in Ligue 1 and made his Belgium debut in November. Ahead of this summer, Fofana changed his representatives, signing with Roc Nation Sports. But his former agency, BF SportsPartner, have previously claimed that a move to Liverpool would be Fofana's dream. They told Africafoot earlier this year: "The choice of heart would be Liverpool. "He has the potential to enter the rotation, and above all, we would like to see him succeed African legends such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and El-Hadji Diouf. He has the profile to succeed in the Premier League. "He possesses qualities similar to those of Manchester United's Amad Diallo, namely speed, impact, and the ability to create opportunities. There's no doubt he can shine. ‌ "For him, this would be an opportunity to continue his development and, above all, to showcase his talent in a league that favours transitional play. However, he'll have to choose the right club, as competition is fierce across the (English) Channel." United are looking to strengthen their forward line this summer but Ruben Amorim is still waiting for the Red Devils to add to their first signing. Matheus Cunha arrived at Old Trafford earlier in June in a £62.5m deal. The Red Devils have seen multiple bids for Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo rejected. Brentford are holding out for a fee near £65m and it remains to be seen if United return with an improved offer. Mbeumo has expressed his desire to move to Old Trafford, having also drawn interest from Tottenham. It remains to be see if United turn to other targets or pay what Brentford are asking however.

Second Strictly star reveals he was mugged in London just days before dancer was left traumatised

COMEDIAN Sean Walsh has revealed he is the second Strictly Come Dancing star to get mugged. The funnyman, 39, took to Instagram to reveal his ordeal which also happened in London. 5 5 5 The Strictly star - who appeared on the show in 2018 - revealed he had been the victim of a mugging in the capital. Taking to his Instagram Stories, Seann revealed: "My phone was stolen (yes out of my hand and yes, I live in London) a week or so ago and it is now in China if anyone happens to be passing by." He shared a picture of his phone's location, which was in China. Seann 's time on Strictly eight years ago was marred by controversy. He famously was embroiled in "kiss-gate" after he was videoed snogging his dance partner Katya Jones - despite the pair both being in relationship. ANOTHER STRICTLY STAR MUGGED It comes just days after Strictly's Michelle Tsiakkas was left "traumatised" after also being mugged in London. Pro dancer Michelle, 29, told her followers that the ordeal left her feeling "scared and helpless". The Strictly star - who joined the show three years ago - took to Instagram to share the terrifying incident. Addressing her fans in a video, she said: "Hi guys, so I wanted to just make this video to let you know something that happened to me the other day in London. "Now this was a couple of days ago and I've just about mentally recovered from that. It was quite traumatising on the day. "It wasted my whole day and made me feel awful, scared, helpless and I don't want the same to happen to you. "My phone got stolen. My phone got stolen. I mean I see it happening all the time but it's just one of those things that you just never think it's gonna happen to you. and then it does." Recounting the story, Michelle said: "So it was early morning. I was on my way to the dentist in London. "It was around Covent Garden so the streets were really quiet. I think I was just the only person around so maybe I was an easy target and I whipped out my phone to have a look at the directions to see where my dentist was. "I was on the actual street of the dentist and what happens? A man comes on a bike behind me, sweeps past me and grabs my phone. "So he's grabbed my phone. He's on an electric bike and my heart just sank. I tried to I think like reach for it and that made me fall on my knees on the floor and graze my knee. "I think my reflex was just to swear and then scream give me back my phone and clearly you know that didn't work. "He just left. He was wearing a mask so there was no way that I could have seen what he looked like and he was going really fast on that electric bike so there was no way on earth I could have caught up with him. 5 "Thankfully there were two really lovely and helpful women there and they'd seen that I was a bit distressed." Michelle captioned the video with: "Warning ⚠️ This can happen to you in Central London. "Has something like this ever happened to you?"

Emily Atack stuns in a bandeau swimsuit to top up her tan after celebrating son's first birthday

Emily Atack looked stunning as she topped up her tan in a bandeau swimsuit on Sunday. The actress, 35, who recently celebrated her son Barney's first birthday, relaxed in the garden and made the most of the hot weather. Sharing an update to her Instagram Story, Emily wore an orange patterned one piece and kicked back. Snapping a quick selfie, she flashed a smile and captioned the post with a simple sun emoji. Last weekend, the presenter and her boyfriend Alistair Garner threw a lavish party to celebrate their son Barney's first birthday. Emily took to her Instagram with highlights from her 'beautiful' son's first year - including from when the star gave birth to him, and recent pictures of the trio enjoying family life. Captioning the images, she wrote: 'Happy 1st birthday to our son Barney James Garner. The Baby Barn Owl. 'I've dreamt of you my whole life. It was always you. I love you beyond words, our beautiful, BEAUTIFUL boy. You are so cherished my heart could burst.' Elsewhere, Emily and Danny Dyer are reportedly set to be ITV's next hosting duo after 'signing up' to front a brand new game show. Bosses at the broadcaster have reportedly brought in the pair in a bid to 'freshen up their entertainment talent'. An insider told The Sun: 'Bosses have been impressed with Danny and Emily's charisma on Rivals and thought they'd make an amazing duo on-screen to freshen up their entertainment talent. 'They're an unlikely pair but have appeared on a few panel shows together and have plenty of fun energy that is perfect for the tone that ITV want to set. 'Producers are keen to trial new presenting partnerships to get people talking, and both Emily and Danny have huge appeal.' The publication reports they're set to receive a whopping £250,000 each, with the show expected to air next year. MailOnline has contacted representatives for Danny, 47, and Emily, 35. The pair have been busy so far this year filming the second series of the smash-hit series, based on the racy books of Dame Jilly Cooper. Danny, who played pub landlord Mick Carter in EastEnders for almost a decade, is no stranger to game shows. The hardman previously hosted The Wall for the BBC, which ran for three series before ending in 2022 when Danny left EastEnders and the BBC. Mum-of-one Emily starred as a team captain on now-axed CelebJuice with Keith Lemon and Laura Whitmore.
