Blue Jays Acquire Former Cy Young Winner Shane Bieber From Guardians

Fox Sports3 days ago
Former Cy Young winner and ace Shane Bieber is headed to the AL East-leading Toronto Blue Jays in a deal with the rebuilding Cleveland Guardians.
Bieber, who is working his way back from April 2024 Tommy John surgery, has made five rehab starts. His most recent outing was Tuesday for Double-A Akron, in which he allowed one run on three hits and struck out seven in four innings. His next rehab start was scheduled for Sunday.
This is a gamble by the Jays, considering that Bieber had his rehab interrupted back in May – he was originally supposed to be back in the majors in June, if all had gone to plan. Instead, his rehab shut down after a single start due to elbow soreness, and did not resume until July 15.
With that in mind, this trade is more about what Bieber could potentially bring to Toronto's postseason roster than its regular season one: if Bieber returns to the majors and fully shakes the rust off by the time October rolls around, then the Jays' rotation would have a major upgrade on its hands.
Bieber had spent his entire career in Cleveland, including winning the AL Cy Young Award in 2020. He has a career record of 62-32 with a 3.22 ERA and 958 strikeouts in 136 games, with 134 starts since his debut in 2018.
He agreed to a one-year, $14 million contract last fall with a $16 million player option for 2026, so this trade also represents a potential rental for Toronto. Of course, if Bieber opts out of the deal, that means he's shown himself to be healthy and productive enough to gamble on himself on the open market; Toronto would likely take that trade, too.
Cleveland is getting right-hander Khal Stephen from the Blue Jays in return. The 22-year old Stephen has a combined record of 9-1 with a 2.06 ERA in 18 games, with 17 starts, in the Blue Jays' farm system this season. He was a second-round selection (59th overall) by Toronto in the 2024 amateur draft. He made one start for Double-A New Hampshire following his promotion on July 20 before being placed on the injured list with right shoulder impingement.
The Guardians began trade deadline day in second place in the AL Central, nine games behind the Tigers and potentially in the wild-card race, but their moves – they also traded Paul Sewald to the Tigers – signal this has become a spiraling season.
Cleveland closer Emmanuel Clase, a three-time All-Star, was placed on non-disciplinary paid leave as part of a Major League Baseball investigation into sports betting earlier in the week.
Luis Ortiz also is on non-disciplinary leave through Aug. 31, stemming from an investigation regarding in-game prop bets on two pitches thrown by the right-hander that received higher activity than usual during his starts at Seattle on June 15 and against St. Louis on June 27. The gambling activity on the pitches was flagged by a betting integrity firm and forwarded to MLB.

Aaron Boone pushes back on ‘accountability' criticism after Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez rip Yankees

Try it free MIAMI — Wearing a T-shirt that featured the face of the former Yankees captain who criticized the current club for making too many mistakes, Aaron Boone played defense. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez ripped the Yankees on Saturday in their roles as FOX Sports commentators — Jeter saying 'they make way too many mistakes' and Rodriguez asking, 'Where's the accountability' for those mistakes — after a game in which Jazz Chisholm Jr. was doubled off at first base on a popup to second. 'Look, we're the Yankees, and when we lose games, if it's in and around a mistake, that criticism is fair,' Boone said Sunday morning at loanDepot Park. 'It's fair game, I guess. At the end of the day, we have the pieces I think to be a really good team and that's on me and all of us to get the most out of that. 3 Aaron Boone reacts during the Yankees' game against the Marlins on Aug. 2. AP 3 Jazz Chisholm Jr. reacts after his baserunning blunder during the Yankees' Aug. 2 loss. Screengrab via X/@TalkinYanks 'I would disagree a little bit with the accountability factor. But the reality is we're focused every day on being the best we can be. That's how we have to do it. But I understand when it doesn't happen or we don't have the record, I think we should have, or certainly people think we should have, that comes with the territory. It's on us to change that thought.' Boone indicated that there is more going on behind the scenes in terms of accountability that doesn't get shown in front of cameras or voiced in postgame press conferences. The eighth-year manager has rarely pulled a player in-game for making a baserunning mistake, with his standard for benching being if he sees a player 'dogging it.' Rodriguez claimed that if any of the Yankees he played with made a mistake, 'we would be sitting our butt right on the bench.' Boone, whose club entered Sunday 60-51 and in third place in the AL East, said the perception that there is no accountability 'maybe sometimes' makes him angry. 3 Alex Rodriguez (second from left) and Derek Jeter (r.) are pictured during the FOX broadcast Aug. 2. FOX Sports 'The reality is, I think we should be better than what our record is and that starts with me,' Boone said. 'We got to own that. The only way we can change that thought is by playing a more consistent brand of baseball and winning baseball games.' As for Saturday's gaffe, Chisholm said Saturday night he would not do anything differently because he believed that Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards was going to drop the ball purposely — which Edwards confirmed he was thinking about doing — to nail Chisholm at second. Because of that, Boone stood behind Chisholm's decisionmaking on Sunday. 'It's borne out of some thoughtfulness,' Boone said. 'He's trying to make a play. He understands what Edwards was trying to do, we all do. Sometimes you don't have control of that. Sometimes if they execute really well on that kind of play, they're going to be able to swap out the runner. I also understand that this is a turf field and landing on the dirt, it's going to bounce a different way if they do roll the dice with a play like that. 'So Jazz, in a lot of ways, was onto that and trying to make a play. He obviously got a little too far, or his last step put him in a position to where he was vulnerable. At the end of the day, you don't want to make that out, obviously. But borne out of someone trying to make a play.'

Rockies closer Seth Halvorsen suffers elbow injury in win over Pirates

Colorado Rockies play-by-play announcer Jack Corrigan joins the Dan Patrick Show to discuss the team's early struggles this season and their recent sweep over the Miami Marlins. DENVER (AP) The Colorado Rockies' win over Pittsburgh on Saturday was dampened with an elbow injury to closer Seth Halvorsen. The hard-throwing right-hander left after tossing five pitches in the ninth inning, and the initial outlook isn't encouraging. 'It don't look good,' interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'I'll let you know (Sunday).' Halvorsen, who leads the Rockies with 11 saves, was facing Pirates pinch hitter Spencer Horwitz to open the ninth and Colorado leading 8-4. He was ahead 0-2 in the count and then threw three straight balls, the last one at 99 mph. Immediately after that pitch he bent over and dangled his right arm, prompting Rockies head trainer Keith Duggar to jog to the mound to check on him. After a brief discussion Halvorsen left the game, with Dugan Darnell coming on to finish the 8-5 win. Schaeffer said Halvorsen wasn't experiencing problems entering Saturday's game. 'Not recently, but he was feeling something a while back, but he's been good for a while,' Schaeffer said. Halvorsen has been Colorado's main closer since the beginning of June and had converted nine of his last 10 opportunities, including his last six. Three of those have come after the All-Star break, which has helped the Rockies post a 7-6 record. Colorado, which is 30-80, is trying to avoid setting a modern era record for losses set by the 2024 Chicago White Sox, who were 41-121.

Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski placed on IL with tibia contusion

With Jacob Misiorowski's grip on National League Rookie of the Year slipping, Trysta Krick and Vaughn Dalzell dissect the "fascinating" race between the Brewers' young arm and ascending Braves catcher Drake Baldwin. Milwaukee Brewers rookie Jacob Misiorowski has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left tibia contusion. The team made the announcement Sunday ahead of the All-Star right-hander's scheduled start against the Washington Nationals. The designation was retroactive to Thursday, a few days after Misiorowski took a line shot to the shin in the first inning against the Chicago Cubs. Misiorowski (4-1, 2.70 ERA) struggled to close that inning, including a play where his knee appeared to buckle as he fielded a dribbler and threw wildly to first base, but he settled down and retired 10 consecutive batters while throwing 40 pitches over the next three innings. Misiorowski told reporters Sunday that he anticipates missing about two starts and being ready to go after the 15 days. Right-hander Logan Henderson was recalled from Triple-A Nashville and expected to start in his place in the series finale with the Nationals.
