Public rally to support family of popular Belfast barber who remains in intensive care

Jay Miller, known as 'Jay the Barber', runs a business in north Belfast and went viral on TikTok after giving haircuts to the homeless in 2023.
He previously shared his experience of growing up in the care system.
On Sunday 20 April Jay took unwell, suffering from a seizure which resulted in a fall, hitting his head and being admitted to an Intensive Care Unit where he was put into a medically induced coma.
Those behind the fundraiser said Jay is a man who has never stopped giving nor asked for anything in return, but people are now being asked to 'help out his family in their hour of need.'
'Since Jay took unwell on Sunday and was admitted to ICU, where he currently remains, many people have been asking about the possibility of a fundraiser to help support the family. So with some thought, we have decided to create a Go Fund Me page,' the page states.
'Jay is well known to the community in Belfast and beyond for all of the work he has done – with the homeless, in hospitals, with those in care, children's homes and hospices.
'He is a man who has never stopped giving and has never asked for anything in return.
'Now we ask for the community to give back, to help out his family in their hour of need. With two businesses and a family to support, Jay will have a severely reduced income whilst he is in hospital and in recovery, meanwhile his family will still have personal and business bills to cover.
'We hope that whatever is raised can go some way to relieving a bit of that worry from his family.'
After being live for just a few hours the page had already raised £2,000, with hundreds of people rallying to help the man.
On Tuesday, the Jays Barber Club Facebook page announced news of his ill health.
'We are devastated to confirm that Jay was involved in an incident on Sunday morning. Jay had a seizure which resulted in a fall and head injury,' it stated.
'He was rushed to intensive care where he has remained in a medically-induced coma and is currently stable at these early stages.
'We thank you for your outpouring of messages … It is still very early days and this is all of the information we can give right now.'
Many people responded by wishing Jay a speedy recovery, among them DUP leader Gavin Robinson.
Mr Robinson said: "Our thoughts and prayers are with Jay and hope that he makes a speedy recovery.
'Jay has never shied away from the difficulties that he has encountered as a young lad. With a pair of clippers and a heart of gold, he has restored dignity and hope to people who felt forgotten.
'Now we hold on to hope for Jay and pray that he has comfortable days ahead.'
It comes as it was announced the man's business has been nominated for barber shop of the year and training provider of the year for the third year running at the NI Beauty Excellence Awards.
In a post on Facebook, Jay's Barber Club wrote: 'Once he wakes up we know he'll be as proud as ever.
'Thank you all for all of your kind messages, comments, shares, media articles and more over the past couple of days. It has been such a comfort to the family and Jay will absolutely love reading them all.'

Family faces £40k bill as man left on organ-support after falling ill on holiday

Ian Wright, 47, and his wife Sarah, from Northumberland, were on holiday in Cyprus when he suddenly became very ill and he is currently in in Nicosia General Hospital The family of a British man are facing a staggering bill of more than £40,000 to fly him home after he became seriously ill while on holiday in Cyprus, leaving him on dialysis, a ventilator and multi-organ support. Ian Wright, 47, was watching Newcastle's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal with friends he and wife Sarah had flown out to visit in Tala, near Paphos, when he became unwell ill, just six days into the holiday. Sarah initially suspected Ian had food poisoning, but he was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis with necrosis soon after being admitted to a medical centre in Tala. ‌ ‌ Haulage worker Ian has been in Nicosia General Hospital since Friday, May 30, and has spent much of that time on dialysis, a ventilator and multi-organ support. Ian's mum Monica Muckle, 67, flew out to the Mediterranean island and has been by his side since May 22. She is desperate to bring her son back to their hometown of Cramlington, Northumberland. However, for Ian to make the journey home in his current condition, he would need to be flown by private jet accompanied by a doctor and paramedic at a cost of £40,995. The family are fast running out of money to prolong their stay in Cyprus, with Monica telling ChronicleLive: "We are absolutely heartbroken because if we have to go home on Monday, he's here on his own. "The thought of it is just horrendous. He knows we're there, and the thought of going in on Sunday and saying to him we've got to go home and not even be able to tell him that he's going to be following us because we just don't know." Ian and Sarah have an annual travel insurance policy, but Ian did not declare that he had seen medics about high blood pressure and high uric acid in the UK. Therefore, Ian's travel company AXA have declined to pay out. A GoFundMe page was set up by Sarah's friend and colleague, Lucy Wareing, which has raised almost £9,000. That was originally to cover the family's expenses in Cyprus before the full severity of his case was known. ‌ However, they are trying to use as little of that as possible, so that they can put any money raised towards Ian's repatriation. Monica said: "We're trying to keep hold of money we have got from the fund. We want him home and we don't want to be spending money that's going to go towards helping him to get home." The family hope that they could use Ian's workplace pension to cover some of his repatriation costs, but do not know how long it will take them to access it. Monica says she has been working until the early hours of each morning contacting charities, but most support families in repatriating loved ones who have died abroad. They are also in contact with the British Consulate in Cyprus, who are helping the family with translation and interpreting, and getting regular updates from the hospital. Monica said: "As you get older, you realise how important it is to put things like that on the travel insurance. We're not holding out any hope where that is concerned. "We're not trying to scrounge, that's why we're looking into the pensions because if we can get that, maybe it won't be enough for all of it, but it could cover a fair proportion and maybe we can crack on getting family and friends to help us a bit more. We don't want to beg for money, we want to be able to get the money through whatever ways we can. We're still having to take it a day at a time, but we just want him home."

I had triplets in my baby scan but ended up with just one baby – after my son ‘ate his siblings in the womb'

A MUM has revealed how she thought she was pregnant with triplets, but one of the babies 'ate' his siblings in the womb. TikTok user @vfbabygirl28 shared how she went on an emotional rollercoaster during her pregnancy. 3 In a video which has racked up over a million likes, she firstly shared how she had been told she was having twins at her first baby scan. However, this changed when she went back in for her second. She wrote: 'Goes for a second scan and find out I'm having triplets.' The third scan was the most surprising of all - as two of the siblings disappeared completely. The shocked mum wrote: 'Goes to the third scan to check the triplets, but this guy just casually ate his siblings. 'Holyf***ingairball.' She then shared a photo of her newborn baby, who appeared to be healthy. People were shocked when they heard the story, with one person asking: 'Wait how does a baby eat another baby?' One person in the comments was quick to explain, and said: 'There are two possible reasons for this.' They shared: 'In early pregnancy, multiple embryos can start developing (like twins or triplets), but then one or more stop growing and just get absorbed by the mother's body or the remaining fetus. 'I keep thinking I can't get any bigger' exhausted mum-to-be sighs as she leaves people 'wincing' with her GIANT bump 'This is more common.' It's also known as Vanishing twin syndrome, where one of the fetuses dies and is reabsorbed into the other twin, the placenta, or the mother's body. Twin resorption can often occur early in the pregnancy, often in the first trimester, and can go unnoticed without routine ultrasound examinations. 3 The second explanation, according to viewers, could be Human Chimera, which is rarer. The person continued: 'If two embryos fuse very early in development, they combine into one person with two sets of DNA and they become a chimera. 'If that's the case, the baby might have patches of skin with different DNA, two blood types; or have a set of DNA in one organ that's different from the rest of their body. People were quick to comment on the video, with one saying: 'God forbid a baby cares about the family economy.' A second added: 'He really wanted to be an only child.'

Mum loses 7stone in a year after switching from £400 food to £136 jabs

Mum loses 7stone in a year after switching from £400 food to £136 jabs Ashley, 35, who weighed almost 18stone used to grab takeaways on her way home from the school run Ashley Nickson, before losing weight A mum who lost seven stone from "fat jabs" after ditching the school run takeaways says she 'couldn't be happier" - despite trolls claiming her "Mounjaro face" has aged her by 15 years. Ashley Nickson, 35, tipped the scales at 17st 10lbs and a size 18 to 20 after piling on the weight after giving birth to her two children - Mally, six, and Charlie, two. The mum would pick off her kids' dinner plates, constantly snack and opt for takeaways three days a week - admitting her "unhealthy habits" cost her over £400 a month, but that it "made parenting easier". After she "felt disgusted" with the way she looked in old photos with her and her kids, she started taking Monjouro weekly - costing £136 for a month's worth - in March 2024. ‌ A year later, she has dropped 7st 10lbs and is a healthy 10st - and a size 10 - and "couldn't be happier with the results". Sharing her Mounjaro journey on TikTok, the microinfluencer says trolls told her she looks older since the weight loss and that it was "obvious" she had the jab, but Ashley says it was "one of the best decisions I've made." ‌ Ashley Nickson, with her two children, Mally and Charlie Ashley, a Tesco worker from Rainhill, said: "My weight was my biggest battle. "Trolls may say I have gained years - but I actually have. I've got much more of my life to live now, thanks to Mounjaro. I feel a lot more confident in myself and I'm proud of my journey. Article continues below "I'd rather people say I've aged rather than being unhappy and unhealthy. The jab was one of the best decisions I've made." After giving birth to her two children, Ashley, who was originally a size 12, "struggled" to find time to cook or work on herself. During school pick up and drop offs, she would find time to sneak in a takeaway - usually McDonald's or a Costa - at least three times a week and four years later, her habits meant she eventually weighed in at her biggest a 17st 10lbs. Ashley Nickson, before losing weight ‌ "I wasn't always big," she said. "But becoming a mother meant I had to cut corners, so it just became routine. Every week, I would go to Costa or McDonald's to eat. I didn't have time to go to the gym or work on myself. "At home, I would pick off my kids' plates when I made them dinner and I was just ashamed." ‌ It wasn't until Ashley looked back at a photo, in February 2024, showing her holding her youngest, Charlie, after giving birth, that she "felt disgusted" by how she looked and wanted to change her ways. She had tried various diets before but had struggled to stick to them. Ashley Nickson, after losing weight ‌ She applied online for her first jab of Mounjaro, costing £136 for a month's worth, after receiving a 40 per cent discount, through private company VOY. Ashley first administered the 2.5mg dose at the beginning of March 2024. "I was really nervous," she said. "But nothing happened for the first two weeks apart from waking up with dry mouth and slight nausea. I thought it was a placebo, but then I started to feel less hungry. And that's when the weight started to come off." Ashley described how the jab left her waking up not hungry or desiring any food. It meant that within the first three weeks, she had lost over a stone after ditching her frequent pit stops at her takeaways. But instead, she, alongside her site manager fiancé, Jack Chadwick, 36, started investing in a Hello Fresh food service. ‌ "I was originally scared to tell my fiancé, but he's been so supportive," she said. "It made my weight loss journey a lot easier, and I took it more seriously. At this point, I had stopped snacking completely." Ashley Nickson, after losing weight ‌ Ashley managed to refer at least three people a month for the jab during this time and secured four months of Mounjaro completely free. A year after starting and under £1,000 later, she finally reached her goal of losing seven stone, weighing just over 10 stone. But it came with a deluge of insults when she shared her progress on TikTok with trolls claiming she looks "a lot older." "A lot of my fat was in my face," she said. "So when I lost weight, it left me with some loose skin around my cheeks and under my eyes. ‌ "People would comment that I didn't look like my age and that I looked unwell." One troll succinctly said: "The excess skin has aged you horribly." "Added another 15 years to your face, you looked way better before," another penned. A third added: "The 'Mounjaro face' is too obvious, good luck hiding that." Ashley Nickson, her fiancé, Jack Chadwick with her two children, Mally, 6, and Charlie, 2 ‌ However, Ashley, who is no longer using the jab, claims that she "doesn't care" about her Mounjaro face. "I can always get Botox," she added. "I may look older, but I've probably added 10 or 12 years onto my life. "And I've definitely saved money by ditching takeaways." Article continues below Although the mother-of-two has admitted that the cravings for chocolate and treats do come back occasionally. She is adamant that she won't return to her old habits and has become a big advocate for weight-loss jabs. "If people saw me in real life, they wouldn't be saying that I look older," she said. "And I'm extremely confident with the way I look now. I would recommend the jab to anyone who is struggling with their weight. "It has saved my life and I can be there more for my family now."
