India, EU set to carry out joint naval exercise in Indian Ocean
New Delhi [India], May 30 (ANI): India and the European Union (EU) will conduct a three-day joint naval exercise in the Indian Ocean from June 1 to June 3, reflecting their growing defence and strategic cooperation.
The joint exercise will focus on advanced counter-piracy operations, interoperability, tactical manoeuvres, and enhanced communication protocols, reflecting the growing maritime security cooperation between the two sides. The respective Maritime Operations Centres (MOC) will control the exercise, according to a press release from the European Union
The exercise will involve Indian Navy ships and two frigates of the European Union Naval Force (EUNAVFOR) Operation ATALANTA, Italian ship Antonio MARCEGLIA and Spanish ship REINA SOFIA, along with their respective air assets.
The EU and India are increasing cooperation on maritime security. The EU and India share a strong commitment to a free, open, inclusive and rules-based maritime order in the Indo-Pacific region. This is underpinned by the respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty, democracy, rule of law, freedom of navigation and overflight, unimpeded lawful commerce, and peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law, notably the United Nations Convention on Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the release stated.
This exercise builds on the visit of the College of Commissioners to India in February 2025. One of the key deliverables was to enhance engagement on maritime domain awareness with a view to promoting shared assessment, coordination and interoperability.
The fourth EU-India Maritime Security Dialogue held in March 2025 also emphasised countering illicit maritime activities and exploring new joint maritime initiatives aligning with the objectives of this exercise. Vice Admiral Ignacio Villanueva Serrano, Operation Commander of EUNAVFOR ATALANTA, visited India in April to elevate bilateral cooperation with the Indian Navy.
Naval cooperation between the EU and India has expanded in recent years with joint exercises in the Gulf of Guinea and Gulf of Aden. The Indian Navy has also been providing escort to World Food Programme chartered vessels, coordinated by EUNAVFOR Operation ATALANTA, according to the release.
Launched in 2008 to tackle piracy and armed robbery in the Gulf of Aden, Operation ATALANTA's mandate has evolved. It encompasses a broad range of security challenges, including counter-narcotics, arms smuggling, and combating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing in the Horn of Africa and western Indian Ocean. EUNAVFOR ATALANTA warships deployed in the Indian Ocean have conducted 'Passing Exercises' (PASSEX) at sea with the Indian Navy in the past. (ANI)

However, the supply of these materials is heavily dominated by China, which has acquired substantial reserves and processing capacity across the globe, raising concerns about strategic vulnerabilities. In response to these vulnerabilities, Goyal outlined India's strategy to build resilience into its own supply chain. He said that the government is promoting innovation and supporting startups to develop alternative methods for processing and using critical minerals. "This will help reduce our over-dependence and over-reliance on certain critical minerals," he explained, underlining the role of research and development in securing a more self-reliant future. However, he admitted India's efforts are still evolving. "We are still at a stage of firming up how it will pan out, what will be the route it will take and which are the countries which will support it - financially and through right of way," Goyal said. Italian deputy prime minister and foreign minister Antonio Tajani suggested that the two countries could collaborate in this segment, particularly through private sector joint ventures focused on mineral processing and technology innovation.

The United States and India are intensifying negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, with officials from both sides meeting in New Delhi this week to finalise the first phase of the proposed deal. The US team is in India for the talks,' Goyal told reporters in Brescia, Italy, where he is on an official visit to promote trade and investment ties with Italian leadership and industry. According to PTI, the US and India are targeting an interim trade agreement by the end of June. The broader goal, announced jointly by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in February, is to finalise a multi-sector Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by September–October 2025. The deal aims to more than double bilateral trade to $500 billion by 2030 from the current level of $191 billion. India is also pushing for full exemption from the 26% reciprocal tariff currently imposed on domestic goods as part of the ongoing talks. Last month, India's chief negotiator, Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal from the Department of Commerce, held a four-day round of discussions in Washington with his US counterpart. Goyal also travelled to the US capital to provide political impetus to the talks. The US has remained India's largest trading partner for the fourth consecutive year in FY 2024–25, with total trade valued at $131.84 billion. The US accounts for about 18% of India's total goods exports, 6.22% of imports, and 10.73% of overall merchandise trade.

"Shared concern about rising global terror": Ravi Shankar Prasad in Belgium
Brussels [Belgium], June 5 (ANI): All-party delegation led by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Ravi Shankar Prasad met Peter De Roover, President of the Chamber of Representatives (lower house) of the Federal Parliament of Belgium, and said that concerns were shared regarding rising global terror. He said that Roover expressed solidarity for the terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 civilian lives, while also recalling the terror attack that occurred in Belgium in 2016. 'He shared his concern about the rising global terror, and there were many other members. He recalled the terror attack of 2016, which occurred in Belgium. We are grateful for the way they have expressed solidarity for the terror attack in Pahalgam,' Prasad told ANI. Roover, a member of the New Flemish Alliance, said there was a need to find avenues to organise since countries were dealing with regional and global conflicts. 'I am glad that we had this conversation. As my colleague said, we are not only coping with regional conflicts, but we are also coping with global conflicts... We must find ways to organise ourselves so that we can have a democratic way of having different points of view, but never let weapons decide, and that's the difference between terrorism and democracy,' he told ANI. Earlier, all-party delegation interacted with several quarters of the society in Belgium to convey India's stance against terrorism, the details of which were shared by the Embassy of India in Brussels on Wednesday. According to the Embassy, the delegation, which is visiting Brussels, was received by Ambassador Saurabh Kumar upon arrival at the Airport on June 3. On June 4, the delegation commenced its programme by paying floral tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Embassy--a solemn reaffirmation of India's enduring commitment to the principles of peace, non-violence, and universal brotherhood. Earlier, the Ambassador briefed the delegation. The delegation visited the European Parliament, where it engaged with members of the European Parliament (MEPs), including from the Delegation for Relations with India, the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), and the Committee on Security and Defence (SEDE). The delegation briefed MEPs in detail about the cross-border terrorism directed against India, including the recent heinous attack in Pahalgam, as well as about Operation Sindoor and our policy of zero tolerance towards terrorism. The discussions focused on enhancing India-EU strategic cooperation, particularly in counter-terrorism. Discussions also focused on broader India-EU ties, high-level engagements, and the deepening Parliamentary exchanges. MEPS condemned the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam, and India's right to defend itself and bring to justice the perpetrators, the Embassy noted in its statement. Earlier in the day, the delegation interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, who expressed their deep solidarity with India's strong and principled stance against terrorism and its zero-tolerance policy. The delegation underscored the vital role of the diaspora in amplifying India's voice on the global stage. The Embassy also highlighted in its statement that the delegation also had a productive exchange of views with some of Brussel's leading think-tanks and members of the strategic community.
