British man smuggled out of US migrant detention centre by Left-wing activists

Telegraph13 hours ago
A British man accused of being in the US illegally broke out of a migrant detention centre with the help of Left-wing activists.
Ahmed Mohamed escaped from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on Tuesday while being transferred to an immigrant detention centre in California.
Mohamed, who has been charged with narcotics and weapons offences, was shackled and being frogmarched to an ICE facility in downtown Los Angeles when a masked man, understood to be a pro-immigration protester, helped him to escape while guards were distracted, Homeland Security sources told The New York Post.
The suspect was then loaded into a waiting van and made his getaway with the help of other protesters, according to ICE.
After a three-day manhunt, Mohamed was tracked down and 'swiftly arrested' on Friday by ICE agents in San Diego, who shared a social media post of the suspect.
'You can run from the law but you cannot hide,' the post read.
'After escaping ICE custody with the help of pro-illegal alien activists, Ahmed Mohamed of the UK was swiftly apprehended and placed back into ICE custody.
'On top of his charges and convictions for narcotics and weapons possession, he will now be charged with escaping from confinement.'
Mohamed 'reunited with handcuffs'
The agency signed off by thanking San Diego ICE staff for 'reuniting Ahmed with his handcuffs'.
The detention centre was targeted by anti-ICE protesters in June, when rioters threw rocks at police and blocked off major roads in an attempt to push back against Donald Trump's deportation programme.
Mr Trump responded by deploying 2,000 members of the National Guard and 700 marines to quell the protests, with Karen Bass, the LA mayor, accusing the president of acting like a bully.
The administration's show of force sparked fury from Gavin Newsom, the state's Democratic governor, who warned that 'Democracy is under assault before our eyes'.
Mohamed is the latest British citizen to be detained by ICE agents, after Orlando Duncan Da Silva Bain, 19, was arrested in New York in May.
On entering the US, Da Silva Bain allegedly failed to declare his UK criminal record, which included child sex offences, according to ICE.

‘I'll be back': Arnold Schwarzenegger returns to take on Newsom over gerrymandering in California

Former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has condemned gerrymandering as 'truly evil' after current office holder Gavin Newsom unveiled his redistricting plan. In retaliation against President Donald Trump 's push for aggressive partisan redistricting in Texas, Newsom said he aims to redraw California's U.S. House maps before the 2026 midterm elections. Now Schwarzenegger, the architect of California's nonpartisan redistricting system, is preparing to campaign against Newsom's partisan gerrymandering proposal. 'He calls gerrymandering evil, and he means that. He thinks it's truly evil for politicians to take power from people,' Schwarzenegger spokesperson Daniel Ketchell told Politico on Monday. 'He's opposed to what Texas is doing, and he's opposed to the idea that California would race to the bottom to do the same thing.' Newsom said Thursday that he was considering asking the state Legislature to place his proposition to alter the map on November's Uniform District Election ballot. 'This is not going to be done in a back room,' Newsom told reporters. 'It's going to be given to the voters for their consideration in a very transparent way, so they know exactly what they're doing.' The move is seen as a response to Texas lawmakers' plan to approve a new congressional map aimed at flipping five Democrat-held districts to Republican control. The Legislature's ongoing special session ground to a halt on Sunday after Texas Democrats fled from their state to Chicago and New York evening to block the redistricting vote. On Monday, Newsom, a Democrat, told reporters that he is ready to fight 'fire with fire.' If the governor secures a two-thirds majority in the state Legislature to place his proposal on the ballot, it could derail a key legacy of Schwarzenegger's seven-year tenure as California's last GOP governor from 2003 to 2011. Schwarzenegger is reportedly preparing to be the face of a 'No' campaign, reuniting many of the forces that came together during his time in office to oppose Newsom's measure if it appears on the ballot. Charles Munger Jr, a GOP donor who funded the push to create the independent commission, wrote on X last month: 'Any attempt to undermine the nonpartisan California Redistricting Commission will be strongly opposed in the courts and at the ballot box.' Munger, the son of Warren Buffett's business partner, was one of the California Republican Party's leading funders during Schwarzenegger's governorship. The 78-year-old Hollywood star led the effort to curb gerrymandering in California, resulting in two successful ballot measures in 2008 and 2010. That pair of constitutional amendments placed an independent commision, not a lawmaker, in charge of drawing California's political map once per decade. After leaving office, Schwarzenegger lobbied other states to adopt nonpartisan systems with mixed results in Michigan, Colorado, Virginia and Ohio. He also filed an amicus brief when the U.S. Supreme Court took up a landmark case on gerrymandering in 2019, arguing that the tactic undermines democracy and voter trust.

Newsom threatens ‘fire with fire' if Republicans push ahead with redistricting plans in Texas

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has vowed to 'fight fire with fire' in response to moves in Texas to redraw the electoral map to favor Republicans. Newsom was speaking as Greg Abbott, his Lone Star State counterpart, ordered the arrest of the 51 state Democratic lawmakers who have left Texas to prevent its House of Representatives voting through the redistricting proposals advantageous to the GOP by denying it a quorum. Speaking of the possibility of the Sunshine State engaging in its own retaliatory redistricting push to weaken Republican-leaning districts, Newsom said: 'The proposal that we're advancing with the legislature has a trigger only if they move forward, to dismantling the protocols that are well-established. 'Would the state of California move forward in kind? Fighting? Yes, fire with fire.' He acknowledged, however, that going ahead with such a step would have to be done within the law, commenting: 'That process has to have the concurrence, the support of two-thirds of the legislature. 'The maps, we believe, should be transparent. They should be provided in a transparent way to the public, and as a consequence, those maps are being processed and will be brought to light.' He also said that California citizens should be given a chance to have their say: 'We will offer them the opportunity to make judgments for themselves, again, only if Texas moves forward. 'I'll reinforce that we believe it should be a national model, independent national redistricting, and it would revert back to its original form, but it's done in response to the existential realities that we're now facing. 'Things have changed, facts have changed, so we must change.' Newsom continued: 'They've triggered this response and we're not going to roll over and we're going to fight fire with fire, but we're going to do so not just punching with the weight of the fourth largest economy, the most populous state in our union, the size of 21 state populations combined. 'We also will punch above our weight in terms of the impact of what we're doing, and I think that should be absorbed by those in the Texas delegation. Whatever they are doing will be neutered here in the state of California, and they will pay that price.' Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul have likewise indicated they could be prepared to act in kind if Texas proceeds with its gerrymandering manoeuvre. The desperate measures taken by the Texas Democrats to block the redistricting – which saw them jet out for New York, New Jersey and Illinois on Sunday to stop a vote going ahead – came after the Texas House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting advanced the GOP's proposals on Saturday. Republicans hold a majority in the Texas House of Representatives, as they do in its Senate, meaning the bid to revise the state's 38 congressional districts would likely pass both chambers and be signed off by Gov. Abbott. Doing so would create five extra right-leaning seats in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C., potentially expanding the congressional GOP's majority and easing the passage of President Donald Trump 's future legislative agenda. Faced with that likelihood, the Democrats left town, preventing the 150-seat House being able to hold the vote, which requires at least two-thirds of representatives to be present before it can grind into action. Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu led the exodus and has the support of the Democratic National Committee but he and his colleagues look set to be fined $500 for every day they are absent from the legislature and now face arrest under Abbott's orders after failing to return to Austin in time for a 3pm deadline set by Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper refuses to say how many Channel migrants will be returned to France under new 'one in one out' deal because it 'could help smuggling gangs'

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper today refused to say how many migrants will be returned to France as part of Labour's new 'one in, one out' deal with President Macron. Migrants who arrive by small boat from tomorrow could face being selected for the scheme and placed in detention instead of being sent to taxpayer-funded hotels. The Home Office will then work with French counterparts to return the migrants in return for Britain accepting others still in France with stronger asylum claims. However, the much-trumpeted deal has come under fresh scrutiny after it emerged the agreement will expire in just 11 months. And this morning, Ms Cooper declined to say how many migrants she expects to be able to send back. Speaking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme, she said: 'We are not putting an overall figure on this programme. 'Of course, it will start to lower numbers and then build, but we want to be able to expand it. 'We want to be able to increase the number of people returned through this programme.' She added: 'We will provide regular updates, people will be able to see how many people are being detained, how many people are being returned, and it is right that we should be transparent around that. 'But we're not setting the numbers in advance, firstly because there is no fixed number in terms of the overall number of people to come through this system, and secondly because we're not going to provide (gangs) with that operational information.' The arrangement with Emmanuel Macron's government will lapse at the end of June next year – just 47 weeks away – unless it is renewed. Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said the 'meagre' and 'short-term' deal would splutter to a halt even before the start of next year's peak small boats season. Meanwhile, pro-migrant groups have already indicated they are poised to bring legal challenges – just as they did against the previous Conservative government's Rwanda asylum deal. There was no mention of an expiry date for the new treaty when it was first announced by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and Mr Macron last month. A Home Office spokesman said: 'Over this period both countries have committed to continually review and improve the process and effectiveness of this innovative approach, pending decisions on the long-term future of the arrangements after June 2026.' Last month it was suggested the scheme would see 50 migrants a week sent back to France. At that rate, just 2,350 would be returned before the agreement expires. By comparison, a record 25,436 migrants have reached Britain by small boat since the start of this year. The spokesman refused to reveal how many migrants will be targeted for removal, but said the Government had 'an ambition to scale up' the numbers. Last night the PM said: 'Today we send a clear message – if you come here illegally on a small boat you will face being sent back to France. This is the product of months of grown-up diplomacy delivering real results for British people as we broker deals no government has been able to achieve and strike at the heart of these vile gangs' business model.' Mr Philp said: 'This is a short-term arrangement that will only last a few months and will expire before next year's peak crossing season. This meagre arrangement will be no more effective than the Government's previous gimmick, which was claiming to 'smash the gangs'. 'The Rwanda removals deterrent, under which 100 per cent of illegal arrivals would be removed, was ready to go last summer but Labour cancelled it just days before it was due to start with no proper replacement plan. As a result, this year so far has been the worst ever for illegal immigrants crossing the Channel.' Today, Ms Cooper accepted that the deal would not end Channel crossings on its own, but pointed to a similar accord between Greece and Turkey in 2016 which she said brought down numbers of migrants to Greece. Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Ms Cooper said: 'We never claimed that there is a single silver bullet on this. So this goes alongside the 28% increase in returns of failed asylum seekers that we have brought in. 'It goes alongside the change to those French maritime rules that I referred to which means France taking action in French waters to prevent boat crossings in the first place, and the much stronger law enforcement that we announced earlier this week with the additional National Crime Agency investigators and police to be able to go after the criminal gangs. We have to do all of these things.' From tomorrow, any new Channel arrivals will be taken to the Home Office's processing centre at Manston, near Ramsgate, Kent, and assessed by Border Force officials. Any selected for the returns scheme will be transferred to short-term immigration holding facilities operated by the Home Office, such as those at Heathrow and Gatwick airports. After further assessment, they could be sent to an immigration removal centre to await return to France. It is hoped the first migrants will be returned by the end of August and detention space has already been set aside for the launch of the scheme. However, it is likely to face legal challenges – possibly as early as this week. A spokesman for the charity which helped blocked the Tories' Rwanda scheme, Care4Calais, said last night: 'We will consider all options open to us to oppose any plans that will put more lives at risk and involve governments trading humans.' The Home Office spokesman said: 'The UK government is prepared to robustly defend any legal challenges to removal within the initial trial phase, as we look to ramp up both the pace and scale of returns over the course of the pilot scheme.'
