"Om Ali".. A Dessert That Shines Brighter During Ramadan While Qatayef dominates as the most popular Ramadan dessert, receiving great attention from many, there is another sweet dish that has its own significant place and presence during the nights of the holy month of Ramadan: Om Ali. This dessert is a constant companion for sweet lovers throughout the year. اضافة اعلان There is a unique reason behind the naming of Om Ali. She was the second wife of King Az-Zahir Ibaq, who was married to Shajarat al-Durr in a strategic move to establish a male ruler for the country, as the people refused to accept a woman in power. Shajarat al-Durr continued to rule the country under the guise of her husband until she killed him. This is when his second wife, Om Ali, appeared, seeking revenge for her husband and child. She plotted her revenge against Shajarat al-Durr, beating her to death with sandals. Following the murder of Shajarat al-Durr, Om Ali made a dish from flour, sugar, ghee, and dough sheets and distributed it among the people to celebrate Shajarat al-Durr's death. This is where the dish got its name, Om Ali. How to Prepare the "Om Ali" Dessert: Ingredients: 8 tablespoons of powdered milk 500 grams of puff pastry dough 1 cup of sugar 6.5 cups of water 180 grams of butter 1.5 cans of cream 1/4 cup of cashews 1/4 cup of peeled almonds, halved 1/4 cup of peeled pine nuts 1/4 cup of peeled pistachios Preparation Method: Preheat the oven to 180°C. Roll out the puff pastry dough, flatten it, and cut it into medium-sized cubes. Place the puff pastry pieces on a baking tray for 30 minutes, until they turn golden brown. Remove the tray from the oven and allow the pieces to cool slightly. In another baking tray, place the cashews, almonds, pine nuts, and pistachios, and toast them in the oven until their color changes. Remove them and set aside. In a bowl, dissolve the powdered milk in water. In a saucepan, add the dissolved milk, cream, sugar, and butter. Stir the mixture over low heat until it boils, then remove from heat. In a Pyrex dish, layer the toasted nuts followed by a layer of the puff pastry cubes. Pour the cream mixture over the puff pastry and nuts. Place the Pyrex dish back in the oven until the mixture thickens slightly. The dessert is now ready to serve. Optionally, you can garnish the top of the dish with more nuts for decoration. This delightful dessert is perfect for Ramadan gatherings, offering both delicious taste and a rich historical background.

Bodega cats make New Yorkers' hearts purr, even if they violate state regulations

Ammon News - New York City's 'bodega cats' are beloved fixtures in the Big Apple — but they're on the wrong side of the law. The convenience store cats that live at many of the city's bodegas and delis look innocent enough, spending their days lounging in sun-soaked storefronts or slinking between shelves of snack foods as they collect friendly pets from customers. Officially, though, state law bars most animals from stores that sell food, with bodega owners potentially facing fines if their tabby is caught curling up near the tins of tuna and toilet paper. The pets' precarious legal position recently came into the spotlight again when a petition circulated online that advocated for the city to shield bodega cat owners from fines, racking up more than 10,000 signatures. But inspecting bodegas is a state responsibility. The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets said in a statement that its goal is to ensure compliance with food safety laws and regulations, though it noted that inspectors aim to offer 'educational resources and corrective action timelines and options' before looking at fines. Many fans argue that the cats actually help keep the stores clean by deterring other ubiquitous New York City creatures, like rodents and cockroaches. However, some shopkeepers say the felines' most important job is bringing in customers. At one bodega in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, a fluffy gray and white cat named Mimi has become even more of a star attraction after a customer posted a video of her to TikTok that was viewed over 9 million times. Sydney Miller, the customer who shared the video, said the experience has helped her build a lasting rapport with Mimi's caretaker, Asam Mohammad, a Yemeni immigrant who has only been in the U.S. for a few years. 'Ultimately, the cats are a symbol of community building and the special, unique type of connection that happens in a city like New York,' said Miller, a poet and digital content producer. Mohammad said that one of Mimi's offspring, a white furball named Lily, is also now a big hit with customers. 'He'll play with anybody,' said Mohammad. 'Before, it's Mimi, but now all of them are famous.' Another of Mimi's kittens, Lionel, has taken up residence at a nearby bodega owned by the same family, where he is more than a salesman or a pest control technician. On a recent evening, Mohammad's cousin Ala Najl, who is Muslim, had been fasting for Ramadan since 5 a.m. and had another hour and 17 minutes to go. Feeling a bit restless, Najl decided to play with Lionel. He unrolled his red prayer rug, baiting the muscular cat into a friendly game of tug-of-war. The playful tussle helped distract Najl as he fought through hunger pangs. 'Yes, he helps me for that,' Najl said. At another Greenpoint bodega, shopkeeper Salim Yafai said his cat, Reilly, is so popular that one longtime customer even tried to buy him, asking Yafai for a price. 'I said $10,000. He said $1,000. I said, 'No.'' Yafai said. *AP

"Al-Quboot" – A Traditional Kuwaiti Dish Adorning Ramadan Tables - Jordan News

"Al-Quboot" is one of the most famous traditional dishes in Kuwait, a warm and hearty meal that is especially popular during Ramadan. It is served as a main dish at Iftar, providing the body with the energy needed after a long day of fasting due to its rich nutritional content. اضافة اعلان The history of Al-Quboot dates back to ancient Kuwaiti cuisine, where it was prepared with simple ingredients available in households. It is similar to dishes like "mantu" or "dumplings" in Asian cuisine, but it stands out due to its unique flavor and the rich Gulf spices used. Ingredients of Al-Quboot: Al-Quboot is made from dough filled with a mixture of minced meat, onions, and spices. The dough is then shaped into small balls that are dropped into a tomato broth cooked with vegetables such as potatoes and carrots. Sometimes, dried lime (loomi) is added to give the dish a distinctive tangy flavor. Benefits of Al-Quboot: Al-Quboot is an ideal choice for Iftar during Ramadan as it combines carbohydrates, proteins, and vegetables, making it a complete meal that replenishes the nutrients lost during fasting. It is also easy to prepare in large quantities to feed the whole family, which makes it a favorite dish for family gatherings. How to Serve: Al-Quboot is typically served hot with date bread or "raqaq" bread. It can be enjoyed alongside other Ramadan dishes like harees and shorba. Some prefer to garnish it with a little chopped coriander or parsley to enhance its flavor. Al-Quboot in Ramadan: "Al-Quboot" remains an integral part of Kuwaiti heritage, and its flavor never fades from Ramadan tables. It carries with it the essence of the past and the cherished memories of families gathering around the Iftar table to enjoy it in the warmth of Ramadan evenings.
