Walmart and Amazon plot astonishing move that would upend the whole banking system
Retail giants including Walmart and Amazon are reportedly exploring a bold plan to bypass traditional banks — by creating their own currency.
The move to create their a so-capped stablecoin would allow the companies to handle payments with a form of cryptocurrency pegged to the US dollar.
Walmart and Amazon could then cut out middlemen like Visa, Mastercard, and major financial institutions.
The shift could save retailers billions of dollars annually in card processing and interchange fees — but experts warn it could trigger a crisis for the banking system.
'Big retailers moving away from traditional payment systems would be a huge blow for banks and payment providers,' Neil Saunders, managing director of retail at GlobalData, told the Daily Mail.
'Banks and credit card providers make huge profits from things like interchange fees. That is the reason for the interest from retailers – they want to reduce these costs.'
Other companies are looking at a stablecoin too, including Expedia and airlines, according to the report by The Wall Street Journal.
Any innovation currently depends on a bill, called the Genius Act, which would establish a regulatory framework for stablecoin.
The cryptocurrency legislation wouldn't just enable companies to launch stablecoins — it's also key to convincing consumers the new payment system is safe.
There is a level of skepticism around the safety of digital assets and currencies, including stablecoin.
The bill still needs to clear the Senate and the House if any major changes are to become a reality.
Stablecoins could allow retailers to avoid traditional payment systems which cost them billions of dollars in fees every year, including interchange fees which they pay when shoppers make purchases using their debit or credit card.
They could also offer merchants a quicker process for receiving proceeds from sales. Currently, payments can sometimes take days to settle.
It would offer an alternative to the card-based system which is dominated by Visa and Mastercard.
Interchange fees, or 'swipe' fees, for Visa and Mastercard totaled $111.2 billion in 2024, up from $100 billion the year before, according to the Merchants Payments Coalition.
The group of retailers has been meeting with lawmakers in recent months to push for the Genius Act to be made law. They believe that a regulatory framework for stablecoin could help end the 'duopoly' of Visa and Mastercard.

'More choice and more innovation is a good thing,' Doug Kantor, member of the Merchants Payments Coalition's executive committee, told the Daily Mail.
'There has been no innovation in 40 years.'
For Kantor, stablecoins are a positive step as they mean more competition for Visa and Mastercard, and they could make payments more efficient and more convenient for merchants and customers.
However he notes that there are many things that need to happen before stablecoin payments could become a reality in stores across the US.
Not only is regulation needed for consumers so they can see it is a safe payment method, but Visa or Mastercard could potentially take control of or kill any stablecoin venture in order to maintain their dominance, he said.
'They have an incentive to stop innovation,' Kantor explained.
There could also be difficulties in convincing consumers to adopt new technology, or traditional banks could simply adapt to the changes, said Bankrate financial analyst Stephen Kates.
'A large shift from the traditional banking and payment systems would create a huge crisis for the mainstays of the industry, such as JPMorgan Chase or Bank of America in banking, or Visa and Mastercard in payments,' he told the Daily Mail.
'However, at this early stage, it is easy to assume that the banks and payment processors could shift their businesses to accommodate the changes in merchant and consumer behavior.
'However, it is not yet clear how big of a move there would truly be. The introduction of pay-by-bank options at retailers has not meaningfully reduced credit card volumes, given the entrenched use of cards and the ease and comfort of the swipe.'

Amazon's efforts to integrate stablecoins are still in the early stages, a person familiar with the discussions told The Wall Street Journal
He said if retailers made a forcible move towards card alternatives, such as a store-brand or third-party issued stablecoin, it would most likely be used primarily online, where there are already many competing payment options, such as PayPal or Buy-Now-Pay-Later.
'Credit card companies and banks aren't yet challenged by these new entrants and would most likely not be immediately challenged by stablecoins either,' he continued.
Whether or not these changes would be good for the consumer remains to be seen, Kates added.
Third-party institutions like Visa or Mastercard offer proven security and muscle for consumers who are victims of fraud, he said, but stablecoins offer none of this.
'While companies like Walmart or Amazon have the financial resources to stand behind any future branded stablecoins, there are open questions about how stablecoin use or misuse might impact the stability of the broader financial system.
'Stablecoins, similar to other non-bank, non-FDIC insured products like money markets, are susceptible to runs, which can become panic-inducing for consumers and financial institutions when they occur.'
Plus, it is unlikely to mean that lower costs from reduced interchange fees are passed down to the consumer.
'It's possible that the overall cost of goods might fall slightly, but it is more likely that there would be a discount for consumers who use it similar to the cash discount seen at certain retailers,' said Kates.
Amazon's efforts to integrate stablecoins are still in the early stages, a person familiar with the discussions told The Wall Street Journal, and some of the talks have centered on having the company's own coin for online purchases.
Walmart has lobbied for adding a separate amendment to the Genius Act, people familiar with the matter told the outlet.
It would introduce more competition in the credit-card sector.

Vicky Pattison uses this CurrentBody LED hair growth helmet to prevent hair loss
Vicky Pattison just shared with fans she's been loving this LED hair growth helmet from CurrentBody that promises to reduce hair thinning and hair loss, for healthier, longer locks Vicky Pattison recently revealed the beauty gadget she's been using in her self-care routine to reduce and prevent hair loss and thinning—and we know where you can shop for your own. Taking to social media, Vicky enjoyed some RNR while wearing this CurrentBody Skin LED Hair Growth Helmet. This red light therapy device promotes hair regrowth, stimulating new hair's strengthening and faster growth while reducing hair loss and thinning with every use. Clinically proven to give up to 126% more growth than topical, laser and supplement treatments alone, this CurrentBody LED helmet uses natural, cellular LED light therapy treatment to encourage thicker hair and new hair growth. This helmet is equipped with 120 LED bulbs that deliver 18 J/cm² of precise red (640nm) wavelengths. It stimulates the blood flow of oxygen and essential nutrients to hair follicles, increasing hair density and faster growth. Boasting a unique shape that ensures full, optimal scalp coverage without any patches missed. Set to provide results after hands-free 10-minute daily treatment at home, this LED helmet has been proven to enhance hair quality significantly and is even more effective when used with complementary hair regrowth treatments. Plus, CurrentBody promises noticeable results after a matter of weeks. Perfect for men and women alike, the helmet comes in two sizes to offer the best coverage for your unique head shape. Both the small/medium and medium/large size options retail for £649.99 on Amazon and directly from CurrentBody. Though the helmet hasn't received any reviews on Amazon yet, plenty of CurrentBody shoppers have been singing its praises. One 5-star reviewer raves: "I have been using this now for about 6 weeks. Not always consistently but my hairdresser and my husband have said things like "Wow your hair has gotten so long" or "Your hair seems thicker." Not sure if this is all from the Hair Growth Helmet but I must admit it seems to have a lot more little hairs growing and I notice it when I am blowing my hair dry. I love the face, neck and hair growth helmet!" Another buyer beams: "I've been suing this device since Dec 15th, 2024 and have already seen sooo much new hair growth. I had ascari g alopecia (Discoid Lupus on my scalp) and all though I know won't get complete hair regrowth on the scared tissue, I'm still seeing lots of new hairs. If you're on the fence, don't wait! I started seeing results in less than 2 weeks." And further songs of praise come from this shopper who says: " This really has been a complete gamechanger for my hairloss and regrowth. I've used this every single day, without a single day off, for 7 months and have seen significant reduction in hairloss and significant increase in hair growth. Now, what I would say is that hairloss reduction could be down to a number of different factors (I upped my iron and vitamin D, for instance, as I was suffering from extremely bad hairloss following some medication I took), but the regrowth speed is categorically down to this device. So while stopping hairloss is not something I can fully vouch for, I will say that the regrowth using this has been speedy and really impressive." If you're looking for a more versatile and discreet way of encouraging hair regrowth, check out this Red Light Infrared Hat Welzo Hair Wellness Growth Cap that retails for a more affordable £99.99, down from £299.99.

Texas enclave is rivalling Napa with beautiful remote homes and the best kept secret wineries in the country
A sleepy Hill Country town with more than 75 wineries has caught the attention of Americans from all over the country. Fredericksburg, Texas, has transformed into one of the state's most buzzed-about travel destinations for its wine production and stunning views of nature — and it's quickly become a rival to California's Napa Valley. The town, which has also been compared to Aspen due to its wealthy clientele and beautiful mountain views, was founded in 1846 by German immigrants as part of the German settlement of Texas. The town became known for its distinctive blend of Texas and German culture, with settlers maintaining their German traditions, language, and architecture while adapting to American culture. 'It's a quaint little town. You go there and you don't expect to get so much,' local realtor Cesar Amezcua told the Daily Mail. 'You have a Main Street that is full of high-end shops and great restaurants and wine tasting rooms. And now you're seeing five-star hotels being built. Full-on high-end luxury.' Fredericksburg began as a modest winemaking region, but is now a paradise filled with local attractions like Enchanted Rock and spas that source their organic products locally. 'We used to go to the same two wineries — now I don't even know how many there are,' said Amezcua. He says the wineries started popping up when land buyers realized the clay-like soil was ripe for growing grapes. 'The soil is fantastic. Beautiful reddish color. Very rich,' he added. The Hill Country's year-round hot climate also helps. The many wineries don't just offer tastings and events, they're also full experiences. 'They throw parties with live music,' Amezcua told the Daily Mail. 'Many are kid friendly. Some have full kitchens you can rent out. Now we have distilleries. We have breweries. You can just show up at noon and by 5pm you've done some real damage.' There's even an urban wine trail visitors can follow for a day of tastings. Many of the vineyards paired their own chef-prepared bites (like locally grown peaches) with the wines they produce. Getting around the area to winery hop is easy and fun. 'There's little limos that take you around. You see the pink limos for the bachelorette parties,' Amezcua said. 'Then there's bus tours that take you from winery to winery.' But Fredericksburg isn't just for wine lovers. There's something for every kind of visitor. For families, there's a small waterpark and there are kid friendly games at many of the wineries. 'Mommy and daddy can go in and have some wine while the kids are splashing around,' he added. The area is peppered with plenty of AirBnbs, tiny homes, and cabins for rent. 'There's places that have treehouses, beautiful, beautiful architecture out in the middle of nowhere,' he said. Amezcua says investors and even celebrities are taking notice of the area and all it has to offer. Peach Haus, which offers unique jams and jellies made from locally grown fresh fruits 'There's some high-powered families. A couple celebrities,' he said, hinting that Fredericksburg's proximity to Austin's star-studded scene is a draw. Sandra Bullock and Willie Nelson have been spotted in the area, he added, but the A-listers can go unnoticed in its 'laid-back atmosphere.' Beyond the wine and luxury, nature lovers will also find plenty to do, like climbing Enchanted Rock, a pink granite mountain located about 17 miles north of Fredericksburg. 'Enchanted Rock — if you're into that — it's incredible,' Amezcua said. 'We go once a year. My children love it. I go up there, I take a yoga mat and people make fun of me, but I just take a nap.' Downtown, there are endless adventures to be found. Fischer & Wieser's das Peach Haus, which offers unique jams and jellies made from fresh fruits picked in the region, is a popular spot for tourists. With a local spa, restaurant, and peaceful cottages to stay in, the Hill Country Herb Garden is a luxurious retreat for visitors. All 14 cottages have their own special themes and décor, along with a front porch with rocking chairs and a swing. For history buffs, Fredericksburg's National Museum of the Pacific War displays preserved documents and art from World War II in the Pacific. Visitors are invited to picnic in the town square, called Marktplatz, in celebration of the city's German history. In the middle of the town square is Vereins Kirche, a replica of a 19th-century German church that is brightly lit with holiday lights from November through December. Antique shops and stores with locally made goods line Main Street. Local Texans love to make daytrips for the town's Oktoberfest. Fredericksburg is only an hour-long drive from Austin and San Antonio and a four-hour drive from Dallas and Houston. 'It's a very nice weekend getaway,' said Amezcua. Pleasant temperatures and wildflower season make March, April and May a prime time to visit. Fredericksburg's well-known fall festivals, including the popular Fredericksburg Food & Wine Fest, make fall the perfect season to visit. 'There's a lot of tourism — that's their number one product,' Amezcua. 'That's where they thrive.'

Urgent recall over summer essential amid fears it 'poses hazard to children' and could result in 'death'
Endless Pools issued an urgent recall on thousands of pool covers that could potentially lead to injury or death. The company recalled thousands of Manual Retractable Security Pool Covers on Thursday due to drowning and entrapment hazards. The products feature hand-crank mechanisms that allow someone to cover and uncover their pool and are available in 8- and 16-foot-wide packages. Each affected cover can leave a gap of over 4.5 inches between the cover roller and the pool surface when incorrectly installed. Improper installations can result in the covers not doing their jobs and becoming hazardous. About 11,500 covers were sold before the recall, with almost 500 being sent to Canada. The affected products were purchased on the company's website and various other retailers from January 1994 through December 2024 for between $1,000 and $2,200. As of now, no deaths or injuries have been reported because of the pool covers. Endless Pools is in the process of informing affected customers via email. It has advised all purchasers to contact the company for a free inspection and repair. The company will inspect the covers and send out service representatives to fix any entrapment or drowning risks. 'We are working on sourcing the appropriate parts for the modification and will be providing them to you within 10-12 weeks,' said the company. 'Endless Pools will coordinate professional installation support services at no cost to you.' Pool owners and operators are asked not to allow kids to use the pool or pool cover when unsupervised until the repairs are made. The company also suggests that no one, especially children, sit, stand, or jump on a pool cover. Individuals eager to look at their covers now can read over a document or watch a remedial barricade bar installation video created by Endless Pools this week. Endless Pools has advised affected owners to contact the company and ask for a free inspection and repair Pool owners and operators are asked not to allow kids to use the pool or pool cover when unsupervised until the repairs are made This recall is one of several that have been made for everyday essentials and household products. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recalled all Baseus 65W 30000mAh Portable Chargers after 72 people reported the products experienced 'bulging', swelling that occurs before an item bursts into flames. Anker also pulled its PowerCore 10000 power bank from Amazon, Newegg, and eBay after receiving 19 reports of fires and explosions. Other recalls include fitness gear sold at Costco and 50,000 faulty smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
