Abrego Garcia's wife begged judge for protection order, saying 'he slapped me': audio
Deported alleged MS-13 member Kilmar Abrego Garcia is facing more allegations of abuse after an audio recording reportedly of his wife, Jennifer Vasquez Sura, begging a judge for a temporary order of protection.
In a recording of an August 2020 court hearing obtained by USA Today, Sura describes the abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of Abrego Garcia. Sura recalled multiple instances of alleged abuse, claiming that Abrego Garcia pushed her, grabbed her by the hair and slapped her.
"On Wednesday, he hit me, like around like, three in the morning, he would just wake up and like, hit me," Sura told the court.

At one point, Sura said she was trying to escape Abrego Garcia when she saw a neighbor walking their dog and screamed "help." Sura said Abrego Garcia then "grabbed me from my hair, and then he slapped me."
The neighbor was allegedly stunned and "didn't know what to do."

Additionally, Sura alleges in the recording that she tried to get an order in December, presumably in 2019, but that Abrego Garcia's family convinced her not to go through with it because his father was sick.
The filing, which was obtained by Fox News Digital, shows that Sura said she was "afraid of being too close to him. I have multiple photos/videos of how violent he can be and all the bruises he [has] left me." The allegations were written in Sura's handwriting.
"The 'Maryland Man' Hoax continues to get worse for the fake news, as we always said it would. Just imagine if we had more real journalists in this country who actually cared about digging for facts instead of pushing fabricated narratives to advance their political agenda. And shame on the Democrats for continuing to advocate for this illegal criminal, MS-13 gang member and wife beater," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News in a statement on Friday.
Abrego Garcia was made a central figure in the debate surrounding the handling of illegal immigration and was repeatedly described as a "Maryland man." However, the Salvadoran national was living in the U.S. illegally and is suspected of being a member of the notoriously violent gang MS-13.

In addition to the allegations of abuse and gang membership, Abrego Garcia is also suspected of participating in human trafficking. Bodycam footage shows Abrego Garcia interacting with the Tennessee Highway Patrol during a traffic stop that led to the trafficking allegations. According to a 2022 Homeland Security Investigations report, the trooper saw eight individuals in the vehicle, and Abrego Garcia said he had been driving for three days from Texas to Maryland via Missouri to bring them to work in construction.
Last month, Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., traveled to El Salvador to meet with Abrego Garcia, a move that was criticized by both Republicans and Democrats, particularly after allegations against Abrego Garcia came to light.
When asked about the allegations against Abrego Garcia, Van Hollen told reporters that "I have repeatedly said that we're not vouching for Kilmar Abrego Garcia. We are vouching for his constitutional rights, because if you trample over his constitutional rights, you threaten them for every American and everybody who resides in America."

Illegal immigrant and Salvadoran national Victor Martinez-Hernandez was recently found guilty of raping and murdering Rachel in August 2023.

For those who are paying attention and care at all about human decency, the Trump administration's political chaos and social instability is a challenge that's making some well-meaning people say some strange things. One of the strangest can be attributed to Obama derangement syndrome. O.D.S. sounds sensible enough. Barack Obama was a popular president. Trump took the country into dangerous territory this week. He attempted to take control of the California National Guard and has deployed a Marine battalion to rein in protesting Angelenos. Meanwhile, a line of tanks will soon fête the president in his Army birthday parade, a galling display of authoritarian theater. This week the writer Mark Leibovich leveled up dinner party and social media murmurs about Obama's whereabouts with an essay asking why the former president has been missing in action. The question speaks to an accepted truth: The Democratic Party lacks leadership. Senator Chris Murphy, Senator Cory Booker and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez offer glimmers of a charismatic party head waiting in the wings. But Obama is the complete package with a track record. That idea has enough common-sense appeal to feel right. Unfortunately, it is absolute madness. I don't know which Obama some of my peers remember, but the ex-president was fairly consistent. He governed as a moderate who, at one time, would have been recognizable as a Reaganite. Only in the rightward drift of today's Overton window does Obama's presidency seem radically leftist. As the Democratic Party's leader, he chastised those on the left, threw in the occasional respectability politics about young Black men and sagging pants and gave us an imperfect but critical stop on the road to universal health care. Dem Breaks With Party After Noem Security Stunt: ‘Politics as Theater'
A Democratic representative broke rank within his own party by describing the altercation between law enforcement and Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) on Thursday as 'theater.' Speaking to Axios, Rep. Jared Golden (D-Maine) weighed in on the intense moment that occurred during a press conference with Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and expressed that he felt it was out of place. 'I think that it's never good when a senator or member of Congress gets roughed up by law enforcement,' Golden told Axios Thursday in an interview at the Capitol. But, he added: 'I don't think politics as theater is what our job is here.' Padilla was forcibly removed by officers after he tried to ask Noem a question during a news conference on immigration at the Los Angeles FBI Headquarters Thursday. Democrats have since stood by Padilla; Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer said the incident made him sick to his stomach, while Sen. Elizabeth Warren called it 'horrifying.' In video footage captured by reporters, Padilla can be seen introducing himself before several officers proceed to push him out of the room before detaining him, holding him to the ground, and handcuffing him. The senator was later allowed to meet with Noem however, per Axios. 'Storming into the FBI headquarters and trying to break up a press conference and rushing on a [cabinet] secretary is not really the job of an elected official,' Golden added of the moment to the outlet. Still, he noted: 'I am not in any way saying that means law enforcement should be slamming people around.' Padilla subsequently told reporters that he was at the press conference 'peacefully.' 'I was there peacefully,' the senator said, per NBC News. 'At one point, I had a question, and so I began to ask a question. I was almost immediately forcibly removed from the room, I was forced to the ground, and I was handcuffed.' In a following interview with Fox News, Noem claimed that Padilla did not identify himself before being forced out of the room despite video footage capturing him doing so. 'We were conducting a press conference to update everyone on the enforcement actions that are ongoing to bring peace to the city of Los Angeles,' Noem said, referring to the ongoing protests against immigration raids in L.A. 'And this man burst into the room, started lunging towards the podium, interrupting me and elevating his voice, and was stopped, did not identify himself, and was removed from the room,' she continued. The FBI said in a statement that Padilla was not wearing a 'Senate security pin' that would confirm his identity to federal agents. The bureau added that he was 'disruptive' at the event and was released after he was 'positively identified.' Acting ranking member of the House Oversight Committee, Democratic Rep. Stephen Lynch, further told Axios that he thinks Padilla's incident on Thursday should be investigated. 'We only saw clips of it, so I'd like to find out everything that happened and how that occurred,' Lynch told the outlet. 'He was very roughly handled, and it seemed like he was just trying to interject and attend the [press] conference. So, yeah, I think we need to take a good hard look at it.'

Clearly, that argument has failed. Yet, they persist. I've never liked parades. Even growing up, they struck me as boring and kind of corny. How many fire trucks and floats does one need to see rolling down the street at a snail's pace? But a lot of people do enjoy them, and they can be a good way of bringing communities, large and small, together. Parades have dominated the headlines of late because President Donald Trump is holding one to celebrate the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary. The spectacle, which will feature tanks and soldiers, among other displays of our country's military might, will take place June 14 in our nation's capital. The date also happens to be Trump's 79th birthday. In a video previewing the parade, he invited Americans to attend the 'unforgettable celebration," calling it – in Trump fashion – 'one like you've never seen before.' 'For two and a half centuries, the men and women of America's Army have dominated our enemies and protected our freedom at home,' the president said. 'This parade salutes our soldiers' remarkable strength and unbeatable spirit. You won't want to miss it. Just don't miss this one. It's going to be good.' In his first term, Trump fashioned the 1776 Commission to help prepare the celebration and remind Americans what the Founding Fathers envisioned when creating our republic. Democrats shout 'dictator' and plan ridiculous protests Democrats, however, are freaking out (what's new, right?). Sen. Adam Schiff of California, pompous progressive extraordinaire, called the planned event a 'dictator-style military parade,' putting Trump on par with global bad guys like Russia's Vladimir Putin, North Korea's late Kim Jong Il and China's Xi Jinping. For years, the left has tried to paint Trump as a Hitler-style strongman whose authoritarian instincts threaten democracy itself. Clearly, that argument has failed. Yet, they persist. Opinion: Can you be legally punished for misgendering someone? Colorado says yes. Liberals love nothing more than a rowdy protest, so that's what many are planning for the same day to show their outrage at the president. 'No Kings Day' is one of the most prominent anti-parade 'movements,' with at least 1,800 events planned nationwide. It has received financial support from the likes of Walmart heiress Christy Walton and a host of progressive groups. 'People from all walks of life support No Kings because our country was founded on the idea that presidents answer to the people – not to authoritarian overreach or violence,' said Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, a No Kings partner organization. That is rich coming from Weingarten, who helped orchestrate the devastating and needless school shutdowns during COVID-19 that harmed millions of children. The 'No Kings' name is also ironic, considering Trump first got the idea to hold a big parade in 2017 when he attended France's Bastille Day celebration. The holiday marks a pivotal point in the French Revolution that overturned the monarchy and ushered in the country's democracy. Not to be outdone with the silliness, the Women's March (remember the pink 'pussyhat' marchers from 2017?) is trying to revive itself by hosting circus-themed 'Kick Out the Clowns' protests, purportedly more than 300 events countrywide. Activists will wear clown costumes to show their outrage at the Trump administration's 'clown-show fascism.' They have a 'goal' of setting the record for the most circuses in one day. 'We need to kick out the clowns, and end the greatest shitshow on earth,' the Women's March website proclaims. I wish I were kidding … but I'm not. Clowns aside, should we be worried about a military parade? Back briefly to Trump's parade. Should we be worried? Is it a symbol of the president's devious machinations? It's helpful to consider what's happened in the past. While military-style parades aren't common in the United States, they aren't unprecedented, either. USA TODAY has referred to them as 'retro.' Opinion: Democrats waste $20 million to learn why they lost men. Here's my free advice. 'I see it like most things in American politics today,' David Dulio, distinguished professor of political science at Michigan's Oakland University, told me via email. 'Many observers would like to reduce this to something simple when, in fact, it's complex. Are military parades in the U.S. common? No. But are they unprecedented? Also no.' The most recent such parade was in 1991, under President George H.W. Bush to commemorate the end of the Persian Gulf War. The inaugurations of former Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy also featured parades with military elements. The fact the Army's anniversary falls on Trump's birthday is leading to a lot of Democrats' consternation. It's true that our reality TV president has a flair for the dramatic. And it's obvious he holds himself in high esteem. It's also possible that Trump loves the country, too.
