Desire To Uplift Family Drives Orang Asli Student To STPM Excellence
Roziana, a student of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tanjung Gemok, Kuala Rompin, Pahang, said it was sheer hard work and discipline that led to her being named the 2024 STPM Best Student in the Orang Asli category by the Malaysian Examinations Council (MEC).
'My inspiration is to improve my family's social standing, and then elevate my social status… so that I can stand tall as a great Orang Asli,' she said.
She said this after the 2024 STPM, Malaysian University English Test and Malay Language Proficiency Certificate for Foreign Nationals Outstanding Student Award Ceremony here today.
The awards were presented by Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.
Roziana, who obtained 4As with a perfect cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.0, said her life, which is full of hardship - such as the lack of electricity and internet in her village and a daily school commute of nearly one hour - only strengthened her resolve to the point of being willing to stay in the school hostel for a year and a half to focus on the STPM preparation.
Asked about her plans, Roziana said she had put Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) as her top pick to further her education in economics, which is her field of interest.
'I am keen on economics, so I plan to study in that field… UKM is my preferred choice because it is one of the best varsities in Malaysia,' she said.
Meanwhile, for Nik Muhamad Ahnaf Rujhiee Raja Anuar, the 2024 STPM Best Student in the Special Needs (blind) category, revision and practice were the keys to his success, in addition to often asking teachers if there were things he did not understand.

Security guard braves dumpsite stench to earn extra income for family
GUA MUSANG: For the past two years, Wan Azli Wan Abdullah has grown accustomed to the pungent, fishy odour of rubbish as he searches for recyclable items to earn extra income to support his family. The 37-year-old security guard at a private company spends his spare time collecting discarded items at a dumpsite near Kampung Kundur here. "With a salary of RM1,700 a month, it's just not enough to cover living expenses, especially with rising costs. That's why I took this job, even if people look down on me. "I don't mind what others say. I just want to earn halal money to support my wife and children, aged four to 10," he told reporters at the dumpsite recently, adding that among the items he picked up were plastic bottles and cans. Wan Azli, who lives in Kampung Rahmat, said he always took pride in his work, despite being labelled a rubbish collector. "I will spend the week collecting all these items before selling them to scrap dealers. "The most valuable items are copper, which I can sell for RM25 per kg, while beverage cans go for RM3 and plastic bottles for RM0.40 per kg," he said, adding that he could earn up to RM400 a month. Wan Azli said he spent four days a week collecting and separating solid waste from 8am until noon. "Sometimes my father-in-law, Hassan Sudin, 58, joins me in collecting these used items. Dozens injured after magnitude-6 quake strikes Sulawesi, Indonesia

Thirteen of the injured have been rushed to medical facilities in Central Sulawesi province's Poso and Tokorondo districts due to injuries sustained by the falling debris from a damaged house of worship, said Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB). The quake also damaged a church in Masani village, while the number of displaced residents is still being verified. The quake struck Poso at 5.38 am on Sunday (2138 GMT Saturday) with the epicentre at a depth of 10 kilometres. The authorities said there was no potential for a tsunami. The tremor, which lasted about 15 seconds, was strongly felt in several villages in Poso Pesisir district, prompting residents to flee their homes. In neighbouring Sigi district, the quake was felt moderately for about seven seconds, but no casualties or damage were reported.
