Director-General of the Department of Information at the Thai Foreign Ministry, Nikorndej Balankura, said the demining will continue to ensure long-term safety and peace to residents in the area.
"We have the capability. We have already cleared more than 99.5 per cent of landmines on our territory, leaving only 0.5 per cent, which is manageable within our own resources,' he told Bernama in a recent interview.
However, Nikorndej said Thailand would continue to call on Cambodia to cooperate in joint mine clearance efforts.
He said a similar appeal would also be raised through the International Committee on Cooperative Compliance under the Ottawa Convention, adopted by the international community in 1997 to ban the use of such weapons.
Meanwhile, Vice Minister for Interior, Visarn Techateerawat, revealed that since the border conflict began on July 24, there have been 18 fatalities and 39 injuries recorded across seven provinces along the Thai-Cambodian border.
"In total, more than 780,000 people and 260,000 households in Thailand were affected, with over 150,000 individuals evacuated. The conflict has also had long-term, multi-dimensional consequences,' he said.
On July 28, both countries agreed to an unconditional and immediate ceasefire following a special meeting in Putrajaya hosted by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.During the meeting, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's Acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai, agreed to convene the General Border Committee

Johor leads Malaysia with first anti-bullying committee for schools
JOHOR BAHRU: Johor has made history as the first Malaysian state to form a dedicated anti-bullying committee during its Anti-Bullying Campaign Coordination Meeting. State Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin announced the milestone initiative involving multiple government agencies. The committee will develop phased strategies for implementing anti-bullying campaigns and intervention programmes across all educational institutions. 'We hope this step will create awareness and educate students as well as involve the entire education ecosystem, including teachers, parents and the community,' Aznan stated on Facebook. The pioneering move demonstrates Johor's commitment to ensuring child safety and maintaining schools as secure learning environments. Aznan emphasised that bullying constitutes serious acts of power abuse causing physical, mental or emotional harm. Expanded SST designed for fairness, says finance minister
KUALA LUMPUR: The government chose to expand the Sales and Service Tax (SST) after evaluating both SST and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), said Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan. He stated that the expanded SST was designed to be progressive and fairer, ensuring the tax burden falls on those with greater financial capacity. 'Key considerations included system readiness, targeted impact, and the ability to adopt a more focused taxation approach under SST,' he explained during the Dewan Rakyat debate on the 13th Malaysia Plan. Amir Hamzah noted that GST's exemptions were fewer compared to SST's broader list of excluded goods and services. The government expects RM5 billion in additional revenue for 2025 and RM10 billion for 2026 from the expanded SST. 'This revenue will strengthen social safety nets, including increased allocations for STR and SARA programmes,' he added. The STR and SARA budgets will rise from RM10 billion in 2024 to RM15 billion in 2025 to help Malaysians with living costs. On carbon tax, Amir Hamzah confirmed plans for a 2026 rollout, initially targeting high-emission sectors like iron, steel, and energy. 'The framework will align with Malaysia's climate goals and consider existing measures like fossil fuel subsidy reforms,' he said. The Finance Ministry is studying carbon tax models from Norway, the UK, Singapore, and other nations to refine Malaysia's approach. - Bernama

Consortium Of Four Local Firms Appointed For Th Branding With Board Approval
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- The company appointed for Lembaga Tabung Haji's (TH) branding exercise is a consortium of four local firms, selected based on expertise and capabilities aligned with the project's requirements. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said the consortium comprises professionals of various races, and the appointment was approved through TH's procurement processes and governance, which are overseen by its Board of Directors. 'Since 1963, TH has carried out brand reviews three times, in 1969, 1995, and 2009. TH consistently upholds the highest standards of corporate governance and complies with all procurement policies and procedures. 'TH has always prioritised Bumiputera companies under its procurement policy. Last year, 81 per cent of TH's appointed vendors were Bumiputera firms, accounting for 70 per cent of TH's total expenditure,' he said in winding up the debate on the motion of the 13th Malaysia Plan in the Dewan Rakyat today. For the branding project, Mohd Na'im said TH has confirmed that the consultancy cost is RM5.9 million over three years, and not RM20 million as alleged. Meanwhile, Datuk Dr Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa) was suspended from Dewan Rakyat for two days starting today after failing to comply with Deputy Speaker Alice Lau Kiong Yieng's instructions. During Mohd Na'im's clarification on the involvement of non-Bumiputera firms in the TH branding exercise, Ahmad Marzuk repeatedly interjected, disrupting the session. Lau initially asked Ahmad Marzuk to leave the chamber for 30 minutes, but after he continued his provocation, she ordered him to be escorted out. 'I had given you 30 minutes to leave and return afterwards, but Yang Berhormat continued speaking without permission. Would you prefer two days (out of the chamber)? Very well, two days it is,' she said.
