At least six people were killed and nine others injured when a tourist submarine sank off Egypt's Red Sea coast near Hurghada early on Thursday, authorities said.
The submarine was carrying 50 people, including five Egyptian crew members and 45 foreign tourists of Russian, Indian, Norwegian, and Swedish nationalities.
Following a visit to the survivors of the incident, Governor of the Red Sea Amr Hanafi stated the governorate's operations room received an alert that a tourist submarine sank in a marina near a hotel.
The governor added that the operations room immediately dispatched emergency services teams and 21 ambulances to the incident site for search and rescue.
Rescue teams transported 29 injured individuals to five hospitals: Hurghada General, Al-Masry Private, Al-Kawthar Private, Royal Private, and Al-Aseel Private.
Four of the injured remain in critical condition in the ICU.
The rest of the injured sustained lacerations, bruises, and abrasions and are in respiratory distress and are receiving necessary medical attention.
The six fatalities were identified as Russian nationals by the Egyptian authorities.
The remaining survivors were transported to their hotels after receiving medical attention.
Authorities confirmed that there were no missing persons.
The submarine was operated by Sindbad Submarines, a company with years of experience offering underwater excursions in the Hurghada region.
According to its website, the firm advertises that it owns two of the world's only 14 recreational submarines. The vessel can accommodate 44 passengers and two pilots and features a large circular viewing window for each passenger.
According to the website, it descends up to 25 metres, allowing passengers to observe a 500-metre-long stretch of coral reef and its associated marine life.
Governor Hanafi stated that a review established that Sindbad was operating with a valid license at the time of the incident.
He added that the submarine's captain possessed the necessary academic accreditations from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology, and Maritime Transport.
Hurghada is a popular tourist destination that is well-known for its beaches and vibrant coral reefs.
Medical sources said four of the injured were in critical condition and receiving treatment at local hospitals, adding that 29 others were rescued.
The Russian embassy in Egypt stated on Facebook that 45 Russian tourists, including children, were aboard the vessel and confirmed at least four fatalities.

In statements to MENA on Monday, Fouad said that Sharm El Sheikh joined the ICLEI network, thanks to its sustainable development strategy, citing the injection of investments worth EGP 800 million in the new and renewable energy sources in the city to produce 51 megawatts of clean energy, the establishment of 145 kilometers of bike lanes, the introduction of a public bike-sharing system and robust solid waste management systems. She added the next phase will focus on activating the Sustainable Environmental and Social Strategic Development Strategy (SESSDS), through banning the use of single-use plastic in 50 hotels, empowering local community initiatives, especially in protected areas and coastal areas, and expanding partnerships with the private sector and international supporters.

Tourism Ministry inaugurates new visitor centre of Alexandria's Qaitbay Citadel - Ancient Egypt

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has inaugurated a newly equipped visitor centre at the Qaitbay Citadel in Alexandria, enhancing visitors' experience at one of Egypt's most iconic historical landmarks. The centre, housed within one of the citadel's main tower halls, was developed in collaboration with the French Centre for Alexandrian Studies. The initiative comes as part of a broader objective to raise the standard of visitor services across museums and archaeological sites nationwide, ensuring that guests enjoy not only Egypt's distinguished monuments but also a high-quality and informative experience. 'This centre is a vital step in reimagining how we connect the public with Egypt's layered history, especially in Alexandria, one of the most storied cities of the ancient and modern world,' said Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mohamed Ismail Khaled. He also highlighted the project's strategic importance within the ministry's ongoing efforts to promote site interpretation and cultural communication. The new facility offers visitors a deeper understanding of the rich historical context of the area surrounding Qaitbay Citadel. It focuses particularly on the ancient Eastern Harbor and the site of the fabled Lighthouse of Alexandria, once one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. These were key elements of the royal quarter of ancient Alexandria and serve as vital touchstones in the city's maritime and architectural legacy. "The centre presents curated information about a number of unique archaeological features associated with the site, including the Royal Harbour, the Timonium (a structure associated with Marc Antony), Antirhodos Island, ancient shipyards, and stone quays," said Bassem Ibrahim, director general of Visitor Services at Museums and Archaeological Sites. In addition, the centre traces the evolution of Alexandria's defensive architecture from the medieval era to the 19th century. This highlights the historical significance of Qaitbay Citadel and the extensive fortifications commissioned by Mohamed Ali Pasha along Egypt's northern coast. The center's exhibit features nine bilingual information panels in Arabic and English, accompanied by detailed maps and diagrams that provide visitors with an engaging narrative of the region's architectural and historical development. A dedicated screening area shows a short documentary film on the ancient lighthouse, while comfortable seating areas invite guests to pause and reflect during their visit. The opening of the Qaitbay visitor centre marks another important achievement in the ministry's vision to transform archaeological sites into fully immersive, educational, and accessible destinations. It also reaffirms Alexandria's place at the heart of Egypt's cultural tourism offerings, inviting local and international visitors to rediscover its maritime past and enduring legacy.
