Minister promises top infra at govt hospital
He said the best infrastructure facilities will be provided in the Government hospital to treat the patients. He pointed out that despite being the district headquarters, lack of adequate medical facilities had earlier forced people to travel to Vijayawada for treatment. To address this, the government has initiated the establishment of MRI scanning, a dialysis centre and the construction of several new buildings at the Government hospital in Machilipatnam.
He hoisted the national flag at the Government hospital in Machilipatnam on Friday to mark the 79th Independence Day celebrations.
He congratulated the people of Krishna district on the occasion.
He stressed the need for the development of hospital and speedy construction of medical college in Machilipatnam.
Ravindra said currently, the medical college is operating in its second academic year, and the Minister affirmed that plans are underway to transform it into a super specialty hospital.
Efforts are also being made to secure the necessary funding for this development.
He acknowledged the challenges faced by the nursing college and assured that adequate budgetary allocations will be made for its improvement.
A foundation stone was previously laid for construction works worth Rs 20 crore, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the work was halted.
The Minister now promised that land opposite the medical college has been allocated and assured the construction of well-equipped buildings, classrooms and hostels.
He highlighted that this hard-earned freedom is the result of sacrifices made by many prominent freedom fighters such as Alluri Sitarama Raju, Mahatma Gandhi and notable leaders from Krishna district like Ayyadevara Kaleswara Rao, Bhogaraju Pattabhi Sitaramayya, Thota Narasayya Naidu and others.
He said Dr B R Ambedkar drafted the Indian Constitution to ensure that the benefits of freedom would reach everyone equally. The Minister noted that the success of the freedom movement was possible only due to the wholehearted participation of the people.
He called for unity and collective progress, transcending caste and religion, and emphasised pride in India as a nation that respects and upholds the dignity of women.
The event was attended by Dr Ashalatha, Hospital Superintendent; Dr Srinivasa Rao, Deputy Superintendent; Dr Niranjan Rao, RMO and others.

32 students, 2 cops collapse at I-Day event due to extreme heat
1 2 Silchar : Around 20 students collapsed due to exhaustion during the celebrations of the 79th Independence Day in Silchar as the morning turned hot and humid following a short spell of rain. A total of 12 school girls and two police officers also collapsed during celebrations in Sribhumi district. Medical teams rushed to provide first aid, and the affected students were later shifted to hospitals. Officials said their condition was stable and the situation was under control. On the other hand, Assam minister for Barak Valley development, Kaushik Rai, on Friday said the Barak Valley was emerging as a model of transformation under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Addressing a large gathering at the District Sports Association (DSA) ground after hoisting the tricolour on the 79th Independence Day, Rai listed major infrastructure, healthcare, education and welfare initiatives that he said had put the state firmly on the path of prosperity. Highlighting ongoing projects, Rai pointed to four-lane highways worth thousands of crores, the Rs 24,000 crore Barapani–Panchgram Expressway approved by the Union Cabinet, and the East-West Corridor slated for completion by 2026. He said work on the Shilghat Barak River Bridge, Madhuraghat Bridge and the Rs 700 crore Rangirkhari–Capital Point flyover were progressing rapidly. The Barak Valley secretariat is scheduled for inauguration in Jan 2026, he added. In healthcare, Rai cited the near-completion of a Rs 165 crore 500-bed block at Silchar Medical College and Hospital, a JICA-funded super-speciality hospital, a new medical college at Lakhipur and the sanctioned Sribhumi Medical College. Families wait for promised medication for kids with spinal muscular atrophy
Panaji: As Ruby Borges accompanies her nine-year-old son Dylan into and out of the intensive care unit (ICU) and watches his condition gradually deteriorate, she pins all her hope on state govt. Dylan was one of the four children, all under the age of 10 years, with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) identified by the GMC to receive costly medication free of cost, but govt's promise made in 2024 is yet to materialise. Health minister Vishwajit Rane earlier in the week, however, announced the rollout of an innovative pricing policy for life-saving therapies for cancer and rare diseases. The families of the children with SMA are waiting in anticipation. Dylan last took the costly medication three years ago after his mother crowdfunded and also literally went door to door from North to South Goa asking for money for his treatment. Her friends and family too helped by circulating her message on social media, and she ended up collecting around Rs 45 lakh in 2021. The company offered a buy-one-get-one-free bottle of the medication, but this lasted Dylan only a year. She saw her son's health greatly improve after the medication in 2021-2022. 'He was able to sit without support, keep his neck up straight, and hold a glass in his hand,' she told TOI . Dylan's mother was advised by his teacher in his special school to shift him to a regular school as his IQ was very good. He now studies in Class III, but his body doesn't always support his desire to learn. After the medication got over, his muscles began turning weak and limp, she said. 'Now he gets pneumonia at least twice a year, and we spend days together in the ICU. 'He loves going to school, but he has grown weak, and his hand pains when he writes. He has lost his strength and cannot sit comfortably in his wheelchair anymore. He slumps to one side,' his mother said. Dylan goes for physiotherapy and recreational therapy to Novi Survat's Sangolda centre. Novi Survat Goa, a children's organisation, provides palliative care to children and their families suffering from life-limiting and life-threatening conditions to improve the quality of life. The SMA Care Group under Novi Survat was set up in Goa in 2023, with five children registered in the very first month. By June and July 2023, the parent support group was officially formed, providing families with a platform for mutual encouragement and shared experiences. Novi Survat's director, Dr Philomena D'Souza, has been pursuing financial assistance from state govt for the uninterrupted supply of Risdiplam, the medication, for the four children. She said that the children are desperately in need of the medication to strengthen their muscles and delay the progression of the disease. 'We can see these children's muscles just withering away. Their bones have grown thin, and they are frequently in and out of hospital and in the ICU with complications. You can see the tone of some of the children becoming very soft as their muscle power has diminished. Something needs to be done for these children,' D'Souza told TOI . Kolhapur celebrates I-Day, Janmashtami & Dahi Handi
Kolhapur: On the 79th Independence Day, guardian minister Prakash Abitkar hoisted the tricolour at the district collectorate. Fort trekking, tree plantation and blood donation camps were organised as part of the celebrations and sweets were distributed to mark the day. Abitkar said: "Efforts are being made to build a state-of-the-art medical laboratory, a proposed district women's hospital, a cancer hospital and competent health facilities in the district. There is also good scope for medical tourism in the district and efforts are being made by the public health department and the medical education department to establish the district as a medical tourism hub. The organ donation movement is being implemented across the state and the country and the maximum number of people should participate in it. " He went on to say that Panhala fort has been included in the Unesco world heritage site list, and funds are being provided from the district annual plan for the development of Panhala, Bhudargad, Vishalgad, Rangana, Samangad, Pargad, etc, along with forts. "Also, tourist places hidden in the lap of nature like Dajipur Sanctuary, Savatkada, Rautwadi and the Nitawde waterfall area are also being developed from the district annual plan funds. State govt has provided a fund of about Rs1400 crore for the Mahalaxmi Temple Development Plan," added Abitkar. Shops and showrooms selling electronic gadgets, mobile phones, cycles, and automobiles witnessed a heavy rush of citizens to purchase goodies on Friday. Several discounts and offers were launched to attract customers. The day also saw Sri Krishna Janmashtami celebrations in the city with Dahi Handi celebrations on Saturday evening. Around four famous Dahi Handi events were organised in the city, in which Govinda teams from across south Maharashtra competed against one another to win attractive prize money.
