促使人們重新開始關心起手機厚度的最關鍵原因，就是多方爆料都預測 Apple 將在今年帶來外觀完全有別於近幾代產品的超薄機 iPhone 17 Air。其機身據稱僅有 6mm 左右，打破了目前 Apple 手機中由 iPhone 6 保持的 6.9mm 紀錄。廠方在打造這款機器時，似乎定下了設計高於規格的基調。如此定位不免讓人想起 MacBook Air 之於 Apple 筆電，而 iPhone 17 Air 名字中的「Air」估計也是由此而來。

現代手機內部的空間極為緊張，要想把機身做薄，就必須在電池、相機、散熱等組件上平衡、取捨。面對這樣的挑戰，在如今早已成熟到有些無趣（刪除線）的市場中很難說廠商會願意主動犯險。而 Apple 決定這麼做的理由，估計也是想要端出點新東西刺激銷量，並以此來回擊那些「不思進取」的批評吧？
那既然行業的風向標 Apple 已經有了要動的跡象，競爭對手們選擇跟進甚至說未雨綢繆自然也在情理之中。而最具行動力的便是 Samsung，在 Galaxy S25 系列發表後，他們便以「One More Thing」的形式搶先公開了機身纖薄的 Galaxy S25 Edge。

目前可以確認的情報只有這款手機的背面有一點像 iPhone 16，而且會配有後置雙攝和開孔螢幕。傳說其三圍是 158.2x75.5x5.84mm，厚度比此前品牌最薄的 Galaxy A8（2015）又減少了一丟丟。有消息稱 Samsung 會為這款手機配備特殊的 7 核心版本 Snapdragon 8 Elite 晶片和 6.8 吋螢幕，但裝置內建的電池可能只有 3,900mAh。具體的發表時間還沒有準數，可能是 4 月也可能是 5 月，總之不會比 iPhone 17 Air 遲就是了。

當今智能手機最薄紀錄的保持者是來自 2014 年的 vivo X5Max。現在的手機為了塞入大相機、大電池，已經很難把機身做到 6mm 以內。而 X5Max 的厚度直接是 4 字開頭，僅有 4.75mm 估計很多年輕的讀者可能都難以想像。而且更離譜的是，當年的 vivo 還在力推手機 Hi-Fi，所以這款裝置是自帶 Apple「鼓起勇氣」去掉的（刪除線）3.5mm 耳機插孔的。為了在極細的中框上容下它，vivo 甚至專門開發了一套「繭式互鎖」結構，以分段式設計兼顧了耳機座和機身的強度及堅固性。

這還不算完，廠方還在 X5Max 內為 ES9018 獨立 Hi-Fi 晶片、SABRE ES9601 運算放大器、OPA1612 訂製運放擠出了空間，並放入了 Yamaha YSS-205X 混響處理晶片以達到降低 K 歌延遲的效果。當下大部分產品已不再支援的記憶卡擴充 X5Max 也有，別忘了它還是一款雙卡手機呢！以 2014 年的標準來說，X5Max 的 5.5 吋 Super AMOLED 螢幕已不算小。這片面板的厚度僅為 1.36mm，是當時的全球最薄。電池的大小是 2,000mAh，如果有現在技術的話，能量密度應該能做到更高。為了「取巧」，X5Max 的相機也是單獨凸起的。這點倒是被新手機們繼承了下來，只是程度已經越來越誇張了（望向 vivo X200 Ultra）。
OPPO R5 是 vivo X5Max 同年的產品，它也創下過最薄紀錄，但只維持了 1 個多月。其造型跟 X5Max 頗為相似，也有一顆微微凸起的相機。不過 R5 的內部並沒有 Hi-Fi 晶片、microSD 卡托、3.5mm 插孔這些東西，而是加進了類液態金屬改善散熱，並為用家提供了在當時已相當快的 25W 有線充電。裝置的大小是 5.2 吋，也有一顆 2,000mAh 的電池。

為了讓 R5 在超薄前提下依然具備良好的手感，OPPO 做了一圈非對稱的弧形中框。官方稱其能更好地貼合手掌，同時讓手機整體保持硬朗的氣質。而在機身背面，則使用了號稱厚度只有普通漆五分之一的新型塗料。連這點細節都要「錙銖必較」，才能挑戰極致的工程奇蹟吧？
金立 Elife S5.1 是打響 2014 年薄機戰爭第一槍的產品，在它發表時 5.15mm 的厚度已經足以讓人驚掉下巴，但誰成想兩波後浪會追得那麼快、那麼猛。Elife S5.1 的大小是 4.8 吋，但也塞進了 2,050mAh 的電池。相比上面兩款手機，它有一項優勢那就是後置相機不存在凸起。為了讓相機跟後背齊平，金立特意訂製了一款超薄鏡頭組件。當然，整顆相機能內嵌到背板玻璃下方，也是因為廠方追求的厚度相對沒那麼極限啦。

在不久前舉辦的 MWC 2025 上，「非洲之王」Tecno 端出了一款 5.75mm 厚的 Spark Slim 概念機。你很難說這是不是在靠量產不了的東西蹭 iPhone 17 Air 的熱度，畢竟光看規格 Spark Slim 並沒有那麼地不切實際。它配有 6.78 吋 AMOLED 螢幕，號稱內建了 5,200mAh 電池還有 45W 有線快充。如果 Tecno 真打算發售的話，我們猜測在電池上可能要做出點犧牲。但在工程設計方面，感覺要克服的障礙已經沒那麼多了呢。
對於 Motorola 這間曾在功能手機時代打造出 Razr 經典的公司來說，「薄」是深刻在他們基因裡面的。在 2016 年廠方推出了模組化配件系統 Moto Mods，而僅有 5.19mm 的 Moto Z 便是其代表作。藉由裝置背後的 16 顆「摩磁點」，手機能對透過磁力吸附的配件進行充電和高達 6Gbps 數據傳輸。配件的功能涵蓋裝飾、拍攝、喇叭、充電、投影等等，也正是得益於這種分拆的概念，讓 Moto 敢於大刀闊斧地削薄機器本體（只留下 2,600mAh 電池、單喇叭、USB-C 耳機孔等等）。

Moto Mods 當時的確給手機行業帶來了一些新意，但由於定價昂貴等原因，它最終並沒有獲得成功。實際上在同一年和後一年，LG 和 Essential 都有推出過模組化產品。可惜結局都是草草收場（兩家公司都已經告別手機了），模組化這件事也很久沒有人再提了。

最後，別忘了在當今手機世界中摺疊機也已經成為一股不容忽視的勢力。而由於其特殊的型態，對厚度影響最大的電池往往會被「分攤」，只算單面摺機能達到的纖薄程度自然是常規手機無法匹敵的囉。
OPPO Find N5 剛剛在上月刷新了 Fold 類摺疊手機的厚度紀錄，其展開與閉合狀態下分別只有 4.21mm 和 8.93mm 厚。這是同類機器首次做到 9mm 以下，單以拿在手裡的感覺來說，它基本已經和非摺疊的旗艦手機沒多少分別了。而且在瘦身成這樣的情況下，Find N5 仍塞入了支援 80W 有線、50W 無線快充的 5,600mAh 電池，並且配有焦距覆蓋完整的相機組合呢（超廣角、廣角、3X 望遠）。

不過要論目前摺疊手機工程設計的巔峰，還得是去年成功憑藉「三摺疊」讓華為重新回到舞台中央下的 Mate XT Ultimate Design。這款產品融內摺、外摺結構於一身，展開狀態的厚度只有驚人的 3.6mm。華為在機內裝進了薄至 1.9mm 的 5,600mAh 矽負極電池，雖然不能算大，但也支援 66W 有線和 50W 無線充電。此外它的背後還有 50MP 十檔可變光圈主攝（f/1.4 至 f/4.0 帶光學防震）、12MP 超廣角、12MP 潛望式 5.5X 望遠相機，這樣的配置在摺機裡已經堪稱豪華了。

Honor's Magic V5 Boasts On-Device Live AI Call Translation for Guaranteed Privacy
"Hola! ¿Hablas inglés?" I asked the woman who answered the phone in the Barcelona restaurant. I was calling in a futile attempt to make a reservation for the CNET team dinner during Mobile World Congress this year. Unfortunately, I don't know Spanish (I learned French and German at school). And as it turned out, she didn't speak English either. "No!" she said, and brusquely hung up. What I needed in that moment was the kind of AI call translation feature that's becoming increasingly prevalent on phones – including Samsung and Google devices, and, from next week, Honor. When Honor unveils its Magic V5 foldable at a launch event on Aug. 28 in London, it will come with what the company is calling "the industry's first on-device large speech model," which will allow live AI call translation to take place on device, with no cloud processing. Currently the phone supports six languages – English, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Spanish. For the aforementioned reasons, I can't test all of these, but I've already had a play around with the feature and can confirm it did a very effective job of translating my garbled messages into French. I only wish I'd had it available to me in Spain when I needed it. The model Honor has deployed was designed by the company in collaboration with Shanghai Jiao Tong University, based on the open-source Whisper model, said Fei Fang, president of product at Honor in an interview. It's been optimized for streaming speech recognition, automatic language detection and translation inference acceleration (that's speed and efficiency, to you and I). According to Fang, Honor's user experience studies have shown that as long as translation occurs within 1.5 seconds, it doesn't "induce waiting anxiety," in anyone attempting to use AI call translation. As such, it's made sure to keep the latency to within these parameters so you won't get anxious waiting for the translation to kick in. "We also work together with industry language experts to consistently and comprehensively evaluate the accuracy of our output," she added. "The assessment is primarily based on five metrics: accuracy, logical coherence, readability, grammatical correctness and conciseness." In addition to Honor's AI model, live translation is being powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. The 8 Elite's NPU allows multimodal generative AI applications to be integrated onto the device, allowing. Honor's algorithms work together with the NPU to keep power consumption as low as possible while maintaining the required accuracy of the translations, said Christopher Patrick, SVP of mobile handsets at Qualcomm. There are a number of benefits to having the AI model embedded on the Magic V5, but perhaps the most compelling is the privacy it guarantees. It means that everything is processed locally and your calls will therefore remain completely confidential. The fact that the model lives on device and you don't need to download voice packages also reduces its storage needs. Another benefit of running the model on the phone itself is "offline usability," said Patrick. "All conversation information is stored directly on-device and users can access it anytime, anywhere, without network restrictions." The work Honor has done on AI call translation is set to be recognized at the upcoming Interspeech conference on speech science and tech. But already, Honor is thinking about how this use of AI can be used to enable other new and exciting features for the people who buy its phones. "Beyond the essential user scenario of call translation, Honor's on-device large speech model will also be deployed in scenarios such as face-to-face translation [and] AI subtitles," said Fang. The process of developing the speech model has allowed Honor's AI team to gain extensive experience of model optimization, which it will use to develop other AI applications, she added. "Looking ahead, we will continue to expand capabilities in areas such as emotion recognition and health monitoring, further empowering voice interactions with your on-device AI assistant," she said.

Apple iPhone 16 Pro Prices Drop Even Further In New Offer Before iPhone 17 Release
It's now less than three weeks until the iPhone 17 series is revealed — it looks like Tuesday, Sept. 9 is the date of the Apple keynote, and there are full details of the schedule here. But if you're in the mood for a bargain, prices are dropping at places like Amazon for its refurbished devices. And it's worth remembering that while the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are likely to remain in the range after the iPhone 17 series are announced, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will almost definitely be retired immediately. Renewed Premium is the highest tier of refurbished models on Amazon, and the tier has strict qualifications. 'The inspection and testing process typically include a full diagnostic test, replacement of any defective parts, and a thorough cleaning process carried out by the qualified supplier, or by Amazon,' as the company says. Additionally, there are no scratches on the display or marks visible on the body when holding it 30 centimeters away from you. The battery must have at least 90% of its original battery life. The most affordable iPhone 16 Pro has 128GB storage. Buy it new from Apple and it'll cost you $999. Amazon has much lower prices for Renewed Premium in unlocked condition, here. The lowest price is $804.99, that's $195.01 off the new price, and an extra $30 off Amazon's Renewed Premium price just over a month ago. Desert titanium, white titanium and natural titanium cost $819.97, all slightly lower prices than early July, which in turn were cheaper than they were in June. Switch up to 256GB storage ($1,099 new from Apple) and the Renewed Premium prices start at $879.99 for black titanium. That's $219.01 less than the new price and more than $56 off the price in July. Desert titanium is $914.97, natural titanium $899 and white titanium $909.97. All prices lower than in July (though only around $4 less for desert titanium, a bigger discount for the other two). The 512GB storage prices for Renewed Premium in unlocked condition are these: all four colors are $959, that's $340 less than the brand-new price and more than $100 of the Renewed Premium prices in July. Finally, the biggest storage capacity, 1TB, which costs $1,499 new from Apple, comes in at $1,029 for all four colors, also cheaper than the July prices.
