Pune Festival returns with 10 days of music, dance and drama

Pune: The 37th edition of Pune Festival will be held during Ganeshotsav, from Aug 27 to Sept 6, across the city.
Organised by the Pune Festival Committee in partnership with citizens of Pune, Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC), and the Ministry of Tourism, Govt of India, the festival will unfold against the devotional backdrop of Ganeshotsav.
Over 10 days, an array of cultural performances will be staged at Balgandharva Rangmandir, Shri Ganesh Kala Krida Rangmanch, Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, and Savarkar Memorial Hall.
The festival will be officially inaugurated on Aug 29 at 4.30 pm at Shri Ganesh Kala-Kreeda Rangmanch, Swargate. The inauguration will be led by Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan, with Union tourism and culture Minister Gajendrasinh Shekhawat, civil aviation minister Muralidhar Mohol, Maharashtra ministers Chandrakant Patil, Shambhuraj Desai, and Madhuri Misal in attendance.
Politicians Supriya Sule, Medha Kulkarni, Shrirang Barne, Sunetra Pawar, Harshvardhan Sapkal, PMC commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, and MTDC's Shama Pawar will be the special invitees, alongside foreign dignitaries.

The ceremony will begin with a performance by clarinetist Tukaram Daithankar, Ganesh Vandana in Bharatanatyam by Arundhati Patwardhan's troupe, and folk dance by Janaki Group. Students of Symbiosis institutes will present international forms of dance, with performances of mallakhamb, Sikkim's maroni, Assam's bihu, Nagaland's war dance, and Arunachal's festival dance.

Artists from Kerala will perform a musical programme titled mile sur mera tumhara.
A kathak-lavani jugalbandi by Payalvrinda Dance Academy closes the segment. Yogesh Deshpande and Sarita Mulchandani will host the programme.
The cultural calendar that follows over the next few days is packed. The all-India mushaira on Aug 30 at Ganesh Kala-Kreeda Rangmanch will bring poets together from across the country. On Aug 31, Ashok Hande's awara hoon will celebrate Bollywood actor Raj Kapoor's career with the help of 125 performers.
On Sept 1, Manisha Saathe's divine confluence will blend Japanese taiko drumming, kathak, and Asian dance traditions.
At Balgandharva Rangmandir, a Lavani special for women and dream girl, a musical homage to actress Hema Malini, will be held on Aug 28. On Aug 29, Hindi hasya kavi sammelan promises to leave audiences in splits. The voice of Pune festival and play, jis Lahore ne dekhya, o jamyai nai, will be staged on Aug 30.
A bal sangeet mahotsav and Kerala mahotsav will be the highlights on Aug 31.
Continuing through the week, Mukta Barve will play the lead role in theatrical recital priya bhai, ek kavita havi aahe to be staged on Sept 1, twins' gathering and jyacha tyacha vitthal will be held on Sept 2, Marathi kavi sammelan and soneri-chanderi sangeetik mahfil will be held on Sept 3. Nritya jhankar, jugalbandis, and rotaryche indradhanu will be held on Sept 4; Mrs Pune Festival, Marathi play sangeet saubhadra, and sur tech chedita, a Marathi orchestra will be held on Sept 5.

This Japanese village is where human-size dolls outnumber actual human being
Nestled deep in the remote Iya Valley on Japan's Shikoku Island, the tiny village of Nagoro tells a haunting yet heartwarming story of loss, creativity, and resilience. This village will give you captivating travel stories, and you will be telling them for a long time. Also known as the "Nagoro Doll Village', this once-thriving community has dwindled to just less than 30 residents in total. However, there are over 270 life-sized dolls that populate its streets, homes, and abandoned buildings. Sounds strange right? It looks weirder. These silent figures, crafted by local resident Tsukimi Ayano, have transformed Nagoro into an eerie yet captivating tourist attraction, drawing visitors from across Japan and beyond. These dolls are just there, existing, peering through the window, just leaning on a pole, just sat on a stool, waiting at the bus stand for a bus that will never come to take it…It's uncanny, but there's a story behind this strange arrangement. This village is a result of rural Japan's struggle with depopulation. Nagoro, located along Route 439 in Tokushima Prefecture, was once home to around 300 people. The local elementary school closed way back in 2012 when its last two students graduated. Tsukimi Ayano, now in her mid-70s, returned to Nagoro in the early 2000s to care for her aging father. Faced with a village that felt like a shadow of its former self, she noticed birds eating seeds in her garden and crafted a scarecrow in her father's likeness to deter them. Over the next two decades, Ayano created more than 400 dolls, with around 350 scattered throughout the village at any given time. Each doll, made from wooden sticks, newspapers, elastic fabrics, and knitting wool, is a labor of love. Walking through Nagoro feels strange (but strangely in a good way). Dolls sit at bus stops, fish by the river, or linger in front of abandoned shops. In the deserted school, child-sized dolls fill classrooms, posed at desks as if studying, while others swing on playground equipment or race in an imagined sports day, or undokai , a cherished Japanese tradition. Some dolls wear the clothes of the people they represent. Others capture moments of daily life: a farmer in a field, utility workers fixing a road, or a group of 'villagers' chatting under a telephone pole. The dolls have breathed new life into Nagoro, drawing tourists who marvel at the village's quiet beauty and the striking contrast of its lifeless yet lifelike inhabitants. The surrounding Iya Valley, with its rugged mountains and scenic drives, adds to the charm. Nowadays, the small village of Nagoro gets its fair share of tourists, all curious to see a village that is literally a doll village, a village where human-size dolls outnumber actual human beings. This village, located approximately 550 kilometers southwest of Tokyo, feels like it is frozen in time. This is where straw figures represent those who once called Nagoro home.

Belagavi gears up for Ganeshotsava
1 2 Belagavi: With the 11-day Ganeshotsava set to begin soon, the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) has launched extensive preparations in the city. Following a break in the heavy rainfall that caused widespread damage to the city's roads, BCC prioritised pothole repairs, with work being carried out round the clock. "We've already begun pothole-filling work and allocated Rs 2.4 crore for repairs before the festival begins," said BCC commissioner Shubha B. She added that roads under PWD jurisdiction are not included in the current repair drive. Also, all eight idol immersion ponds in the city have been cleaned, painted, and readied for use. "For the first time, BCC will install music systems at all immersion sites to allow devotees, especially youth, to celebrate the festivities," she said. Preparations include pruning of tree branches along the procession routes, repairing hanging electric wires, installing LED lighting and viewing galleries at key locations on the final day for the spectators. Given the expected turnout of lakhs of people, we're adding 600 more for enhanced surveillance," said police commissioner Bhushan Borase. Refreshment along procession routes DC Mohammad Roshan announced on Thursday that free food and water will be provided to devotees participating in the immersion procession. "To avoid congestion, arrangements will be made at multiple locations across the city rather than a single distribution point," he said.
