The Biennale of Sydney is expanding out west, but a major Sydney gallery is missing out
The Biennale will be heading to Penrith for the first time in the new year, with Penrith Regional Gallery joining the fold amid a fresh push to reach new audiences in Sydney's west. The gallery will be featured alongside returning venues including the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Campbelltown Arts Centre, the Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney (which was recently named in Time Out's list of the world's most underrated museums), and the iconic restored White Bay Power Station, which the Biennale launched as the city's new major arts venue for it's 2024 edition.
However, one major gallery has been passed over as an exhibition venue, with the Museum of Contemporary Art missing out for the first time since 1998. Speaking to the Sydney Morning Herald, the Biennale's new Artistic Director, Hoor Al Qasimi, said that the decision came down to curatorial priorities. She told the SMH's Linda Morris: 'The MCA is a great space, but it's not location wise. It's not something that fits into what I want to do. I'm always interested in people who maybe don't realise that the Biennale is free, and it's for them.'
Outside the main exhibitions, the MCA will be delivering the Biennale's public programs. (And in the meantime, the MCA is gearing up to open its major winter exhibition, Cerith Wyn Evans .... in light of the visible from June 6, 2025.)
With more than 20 years experience, Al Qasimi's curatorial approach centres on the histories of each place and multidisciplinary programming, with a collaborative perspective and emphasis on supporting experimentation and innovation in the arts.
Speaking on the 2026 theme, Al Qasimi said: ' Rememory connects the delicate space between remembering and forgetting, delving into the fragmented and forgotten parts of history, where recollection becomes an act of reassembling fragments of the past – whether personal, familial or collective.'
She added: 'Through the defiant act of sharing, seeing, and understanding, the artists and cultural practitioners I've invited to participate explore the hidden effects of history and how it continues to shape the present in an evolving and consuming conversation.'
The first batch of participating artists and collectives announced today is a diverse bunch of creatives from across Australia and the globe, including Sydney-based artist Abdul Abdullah, who just won the esteemed Packing Room Prize for the 2025 Archibald Prize (which you can visit now at the Art Gallery of NSW). Of the 37 artists announced today, 15 First Nations artists from around the world have been commissioned to create new work for the 25th Biennale of Sydney. Additionally, the Biennale has appointed two Community Ambassadors for the 2026 edition with arts worker, creative producer, and mentor Claudia Chidiac and writer, educator, cultural worker, and creative producer Paula Abood. They will provide specialist advice on local community engagement in the Greater Western Sydney area and liaise on behalf of the Biennale of Sydney between different cultural groups and organisations.

World-renowned musicians to perform concerts in Llangwm
The line-up includes renowned banjo player Travis Stuart and versatile fiddler Deb Shebish. They will perform at St Jerome's Church, The Green, on September 10. Known for their stylish delivery of Americana, Bluegrass, and Country music, the trio promises an evening of 'exhilarating experience.' Having toured across the UK and Europe for the past 13 years, Jaywalkers have honed their craft, releasing five albums and one EP. Their latest album, released in 2025, has received rave reviews and national BBC Radio plays. The concert will also be held at St Jerome's Church, starting at 7.30pm, with doors opening at 7.00pm. Tickets are available for £14. November 6 will see the arrival of Teilhard Frost & Jock Tyldesley at St Jerome's Church. The duo shares a love for Appalachian fiddle tunes and will be performing twin fiddles and occasional banjo. Canadian musician and instrument maker, Mr Frost, is renowned for his focus on traditional folk music. He has spent the past two decades touring with the rag-time outfit Sheesham, Lotus, and 'Son, and has contributed to more than 50 albums and films. Jock Tyldesley is best known for his fiddling in Cajun bands and his passion for Southern Appalachian old-time fiddle and banjo tunes. He has toured with US acts such as Eddie LeJeune, The Dirk Powell Band, Sheryl Cormier, Martha Scanlan, Beverly Smith and Carl Jones, and Balfa Toujours. 'People's Priest' Father Chris Riley remembered in emotional memorial service - as Jimmy Barnes and Kochie lead heartfelt tributes
Beloved Catholic priest and youth advocate Father Chris Riley has been farewelled in a moving memorial service on Monday. There were tributes flowing from all corners of Australian public life, including a stirring video performance from rocker Jimmy Barnes. Barnes, 68, delivered a heartfelt rendition of his iconic hit Working Class Man in honour of the Youth Off The Streets founder, describing Father Riley as a guiding light during one of the most difficult times in his life. 'I was fortunate enough to spend some time with him and the people he helped, at the time I needed his help as much as anyone,' Barnes said in the emotional clip. 'I learned a lot from him and I'm singing for him today.' The ceremony was attended by a mix of former protégés, politicians, law enforcement officials and fellow changemakers - all of whom had witnessed the tireless priest's commitment to helping the nation's most vulnerable children. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese appeared in a video message, where he described Riley as an 'inspiration, someone for whom no one would be left behind.' He continued: 'He changed the lives of so many young Australians, young Australians who've done it tough, young Australians, no matter how difficult their circumstances were.' 'Father Riley put a hand out of friendship, support and compassion. May you rest in peace.' Former Sunrise host David 'Kochie' Koch told of his meeting with Riley at Macquarie Fields, where his ashes will be scattered, following the 2005 riots. 'I hadn't been hosting Sunrise for long and went out to Macquarie Fields just to get a sense of what was really going on there,' Koch said. 'What I found was a priest on a horse walking the streets, followed by those two Great Danes.' Veteran journalist Mike Munro shared that Father Riley's calling was inspired by the 1938 Hollywood film Boys Town, where Spencer Tracy played a priest who founded a home for troubled youth in Nebraska. That film, Munro said, planted the seed that would eventually grow into one of Australia's most influential youth outreach charities. The powerful send-off comes just weeks after Daily Mail reported that Father Chris Riley had died at the age of 70 following a lengthy battle with illness. He passed away peacefully at home on August 1. Father Riley spent more than four decades working with disadvantaged young people in a variety of roles including teacher, youth worker, residential carer and probation officer. He famously said there was no such thing as a 'child born bad.' 'We must have the courage to demand greatness from our youth,' he once declared. In 1991, he founded Youth Off The Streets with a single food van in Kings Cross. The grassroots initiative grew into a nationwide support network encompassing crisis accommodation, education, counselling and outreach programs. Today, it employs over 180 staff and 250 volunteers.

But it's not all bad news, as two familiar faces from the show's early days are making a surprise comeback three decades later. Shock moment Hollyoaks icon returns to soap after a year off screen and there's a twist Producers are keeping tight-lipped on the finer details, but teased that the anniversary will be packed with nostalgia, shock twists and plenty of drama that long-time viewers won't want to miss. SHOCK EXIT The soap has teased another shock exit of a major character as it gears up for its 30th anniversary celebrations. This comes after a string of grisly deaths at the hands of village serial killer Jez Blake. From Hollyoaks to Hollywood James Corden played a caretaker in the early days of the soap. The former American TV host doesn't have much positive to say about his time on the soap, claiming it was "hell on earth." Since his short-lived time on the show he has gone on to bigger things including smash hit comedy Gavin and Stacey. Rachel Shenton joined the soap as aspiring glamour model Mitzeee Minniver in 2010. Over two years her character was sent to prison, got pregnant and had a number of romantic affairs. Since leaving Hollyoaks she has won an Oscar for best live action short film, The Silent Child. Rachel has also starred in White Gold and All Creatures Great and Small Emmett J. Scanlan played gangster turned anti-hero Brendan Brady. Emmett played the love interest of Steve Hayes, with their romance delighting fans until it turned violent. Since his departure Emmett has appeared in Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Gangs of London and even appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Emma Rigby joined Hollyoaks when she was 15 as Hannah Ahsworth. Hannah's eating disorder storyline was the first of it's kind on TV while other plots included being caught in a fire, gangland drug dealing and running away. Since leaving the soap in 2010 Emma has gone on to star in ABCs Once Upon a Time in Wonderland as the Red Queen. Other roles include guest appearances in Death In Paradise, Ripper Street and Fresh Meat Nico Mirallegro got his big break with Hollyoaks starring as emo Barry 'Newt' Newton. Nico's main storyline in the soap was developing schizophrenia which culminated in a suicide pact. He left the soap in 2010 and went on to star in My Mad Fat Diary, Our Girl, Rillington Place, The Ark and Common, Penance, as well as the Mike Leigh movie Peterloo and was nominated for a Bafta for his role in period drama The Village. Ricky Whittle used Hollyoaks as a stepping stone to break America. He played one of the soap's resident hunks, Calvin Valentine, from 2006 to 2011 - when he was killed off at his wedding. After leaving the soap Ricky cracked America starring in teen drama The 100 and America Gods. He also appeared in Strictly Come Dancing in 2009. Warren Brown joined Hollyoaks in 2005 for a year as evil Andy Holt. His stint on the show consisted of date rape storylines and a crime spree, before eventually being killed off. After leaving Hollyoaks, Warren became a big hitter in TV playing DS Justin Ripley in Luther, as well as major roles in a number of dramas including Liar, The Responder, Homefront and Good Cop. Wallis Day played Holly Cunningham in the soap for years before leaving. In 2021 Wallis won the role of Batwoman in DC's series, taking over from Ruby Rose. Viewers have already seen Jez take the lives of Dennis Savage, Dilly Harcourt, Tommy Odenkirk, Joel Dexter, Bobby McQueen and Robbie Roscoe. His daughter, Sienna Blake, recently discovered his trophies, along with Robbie's body, in his allotment. When she confronted him, Jez explained that he gets a thrill from killing and that she is the same. As soon as Sienna ran to tell the world about her dad, a fatal fall and injury left Jez convinced she had lost her memory, when in reality, she was pretending. Is she plotting to expose him for good? Meanwhile, the soap revealed there will be another shock departure this autumn. Will Jez kill again, or will someone leave the village and escape him? Fans are convinced it is a long-serving male character, like Tony Hutchinson or John Paul McQueen or Jack Osbourne, that could be leaving the village for good. TWO RETURNS Hollyoaks has also teased a return of two characters from the 90s. Their identities are kept under wraps for now - but fans are all thinking the same thing. Taking to Reddit, one fan wrote: "If it's from the true original bunch, it must be Kurt and Jambo." Another agreed: "I could see it being Kurt or Jambo, after Kurt came back for the 25th." A third added: "I know the actor for Kurt is keen to come back." Kurt Benson, played by Jeremy Edwards, was one of Hollyoaks' original heartthrobs when the soap launched back in 1995. Known for his cheeky charm and on-off romance with Ruth Osborne, he was also best mates with Tony Hutchinson. His shock 'death' in a jet ski accident in 1999 was one of the soap's first big tragedies - though he later made a ghostly reappearance in 2013. Jambo Bolton, portrayed by Will Mellor, was another founding character and provided much of the show's early comedy. Famous for his laddish humour, hopeless romantic streak and daft schemes, he was also the first character ever seen on Hollyoaks' opening episode. Jambo left in 1998 to start a new life in London, but he too has popped back for special occasions, most memorably in the 2004 anniversary episode. FAN SURPRISE In a soap first, Hollyoaks is giving one lucky fan the chance to appear in a special episode – only to be killed off by serial killer Jez himself. The unique competition asked viewers to pitch why they're the ultimate superfan and deserve to be part of the dramatic 30th anniversary storyline. With scripts already written and filming underway, fans won't have long to wait to see how the shocking plot unfolds.
