This Week in Sports Trivia: May 15, 2025
If you were looking for a busy week in sports news, you found it, as the NBA staged one of the most stunning draft lotteries ever, MLB changed a rule that suddenly made Pete Rose eligible for the Hall of Fame, and the NFL released its 2025 schedule.
All of this happened within a couple of days, and it was just the tip of an athletics iceberg that also included some wild NBA and NHL postseason action, a baseball manager losing his job and a potential presidential commission being established on college sports. And did we mention that the new pope is a sports fan, too?

With all of this going on, we hope you've been paying attention as you dig in to tackle this week's quiz.
So enjoy, and while you're at it, make sure to play our daily Connections: Sports Edition.
Good luck!

Nolan Schanuel's first career walk-off hit gives Angels 2-1 10-inning win over Athletics
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Nolan Schanuel hit a single into shallow center field in the 10th inning for the first walk-off hit of his career to drive in Jo Adell and give the Los Angeles Angels a 2-1 win over the Athletics on Tuesday night. Reid Detmers (2-2) struck out two of three batters to strand the automatic runner in the top of the 10th. Hogan Harris (1-1) took the loss for the A's, who have lost 22 of 26 games. The Angels trailed 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth when Travis d'Arnaud hit A's left-hander T.J. McFarland's first pitch for a pinch-hit homer and a 1-1 tie. Angels starter José Soriano allowed one run and two hits and struck out a career-best 12 in seven innings. He walked two. He threw a career-high 110 pitches, 71 for strikes, and induced 22 swinging strikes. The A's Mitch Spence, making his second start since being moved from the bullpen, gave up three hits, struck out four and walked none in five scoreless innings. Soriano was virtually untouchable through five no-hit innings in which he racked up nine strikeouts and walked one. He lost his no-hit bid in the sixth when Brent Rooker drove an RBI double to left-center field just beyond the reach of a diving Adell for a 1-0 A's lead. Key Moment Veteran right-hander Hunter Strickland, who signed a minor league deal on May 6, escaped a runner-on-second, no-out jam in the eighth and has not allowed a run in 11 innings over nine appearances with the Angels. Key Stat D'Arnaud's eighth-inning shot was the second pinch-hit homer of his career. His first came for the Atlanta Braves against the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 4, 2021. Up Next Athletics LHP JP Sears (5-5, 5.21 ERA) will oppose Angels RHP Kyle Hendricks (2-6, 5.34 ERA) in Wednesday's series finale. ___ AP MLB:

Jalen Brunson Makes Powerful Statement on Jayson Tatum's Injury
Jalen Brunson and his New York Knicks are one win away from returning to the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since the 1999-2000 NBA season. The Knicks took a 3-1 lead after winning Game 4 121-113. They are now headed back to TD Garden to try to close out the series in front of the Boston Celtics fans and advance one step closer to the NBA Finals. Advertisement The Celtics will be without Jayson Tatum, whose 2024-25 season ended due to an Achilles injury. Boston is still a dangerous opponent, even without their biggest star on the court. Even so, the consensus among fans is that the series is pretty much over. Then again, you should never rule out a champion, especially during the playoffs. New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson (11) argues with an official. Mandatory Credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images Brunson was one of the first players to show support for Tatum in the wake of his injury in Game 4 of the series. After the Achilles injury was confirmed and the player underwent surgery, many more reacted to the bad news. Ahead of tonight's game, a clip shared by "Knicks Videos" on X shows the former Dallas Mavericks' guard reflecting on the impact Tatum has made on his team and all the things he's yet to achieve in the association. Advertisement "I feel for him," Brunson said. "It's an unfortunate situation for a player like him. The league needs Jayson Tatum. What he's been able to do in his career has been remarkable. He still has a lot to do in his career, meaning he has a lot of time to make an impact and make a name for his legacy. What he's done is special." Tatum's second-round series finished with the forward averaging 25.0 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.5 assists in four games. The Celtics were upset in the first two games of the series, at home, and couldn't tie things up at Madison Square Garden. Even if the Celtics pull off the 3-1 comeback, the competition will get considerably harder in the next rounds. They can still try to make a run given all the quality players they have on the roster, but being without their No. 1 option will be tough for the C's.
