'If Gill Becomes Good Man Manager Like Dhoni…': Ex-India Coach's Advise To Test Captain
Former India coach Gary Kirsten has advised Shubman Gill to develop strong man-management skills like MS Dhoni to become a great captain.
BCCI's decision to name Shubman Gill as India's Test captain after Rohit Sharma raised quite a few eyebrows. However, the young batter from Punjab accepted the responsibility with both hands and even delivered decently in the ongoing Test series against England.
Gill is currently the top scorer of the series, amassing 607 runs in just three matches. Moreover, he led the team to a first-ever victory at Edgbaston. But overall, he seems to be under a bit of pressure as the team trails 2-1 in the 5-match series.
Former South Africa cricketer and ex-India coach Gary Kirsten has praised Gill's early signs as captain and advised him to become a great man-manager like MS Dhoni.
'Well, it's early days. I think he's got great potential. Captaincy is a whole lot of things that you've got to put together. He's a great thinker in the game. He's a good player himself. But there's a whole bunch of things you've got to get right," Kirsten told Rediff.com.
'And I think man management is going to play, like any leader. Dhoni was an incredible man-manager. If he can get that component of his leadership really fired up, I think he has all the credentials to become a great captain for India."
Gill began the series with 147 at Headingley, followed by 269 and 161 in the two innings at Edgbaston. His total of 430 runs in a single Test is the second-highest match aggregate in Test history. He also won the Player of the Match award in India's 336-run win in Birmingham.
However, he struggled in the third Test at Lord's, scoring just 22 runs across two innings, and India lost the match. Gill will now look to return to form in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, and help India level the series.

BCCI Under RTI: Long-Stalled Sports Bill To Be Tabled Today, Likely To Clear Parliament
Last Updated: Despite not receiving government funding, the BCCI, like other national sports bodies, will have to comply with regulations set out by the sports ministry once the bill is enacted Union sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya is set to introduce the highly anticipated National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. The legislation, focused on athlete welfare and systemic reform, represents a significant step towards transparency and accountability in Indian sports governance. A key provision of the bill is to bring all national sports bodies, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005. This long-debated and previously resisted move is expected to finally become law, ending years of delay and political pushback. A previous attempt during the UPA era by then sports minister Ajay Maken failed due to opposition within his own party. Despite not receiving government funding, the BCCI, like other national sports federations, will be required to comply with the regulations set out by the sports ministry once the bill is enacted. This is particularly significant as the Indian cricket team prepares to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, which will place the BCCI within the framework of a national sports federation. 'It wasn't easy to bring the BCCI on board, but extensive dialogue was held between lawmakers and the BCCI top brass to ensure their cooperation," a source involved in the legislative process told CNN-News18. 'The government's intent is clear: to instill accountability and transparency across all sports federations in the country." Once enacted, the bill will mandate all recognised sports bodies to comply with the RTI Act, opening up access to decision-making processes, financial records, and governance structures to the public. The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, aims to overhaul the Indian sports ecosystem through a series of structural reforms, including legal clarity, gender equality, athlete empowerment, and enhanced public oversight. More than just a legal framework, the bill signals the dawn of a new era where athletes are not just competitors but active stakeholders in India's sporting future. India's sports sector has long been plagued by controversies such as mismanagement, opaque elections in sports federations, and poor athlete representation. With over 350 court cases pending across federations, the judiciary has consistently urged the government to legislate a comprehensive governance structure. Efforts to introduce such a bill date back to 2011, but progress was repeatedly blocked by legal challenges, shifting political priorities, and unresolved court interventions. The Delhi High Court's endorsement of the 2011 Sports Code and pending litigations around the 2017 draft further stalled momentum. Officials believe that beyond governance reform, the bill will also contribute to employment generation, better protection for athletes—especially women and minors—and a more ethical, competitive, and globally aligned sporting culture in India. IND vs ENG 4th Test: Depleted and hurt, Shubman Gill's India hunt Lord's payback in Manchester
Shubman Gill ko gussa kyu aata hai? Once a calm, cheerful, Instagram reel-making youngster, captaincy has brought out a very different side of Shubman Gill. That shift was on full display at Lord's, where Gill clashed with Zak Crawley, demanding bravery from the England opener in fading Tuesday, 22 July, Gill walked into the pre-match press conference stone-faced. When asked about the incident, he delivered a cold reply that rippled through the press room: they came 90 seconds late with only seven minutes left to arriving 90 seconds late is not against the rules - batters get 3 minutes to reach the crease in Test cricket. But the delay cost India one over on Day 3 at Lord's, and clearly rubbed Gill the wrong way. Maybe he wasn't just angry at England. Maybe he was angry at himself. Lord's was the only Test so far where Gill didn't score a hundred. And if he believes the top-order collapse lost India the match, he would be the first to take that undertone of hurt and anger was reflected in Mohammed Siraj's press conference as well, two days back, when he said that there would definitely be more words exchanged between the teams in Manchester. Usually a guy who loves to have fun, if 'Miya' says that words are going to be exchanged, then words are certainly going to be truth be told, India will need some of that in Injury CrisisHeading into the fourth Test match, where the series could potentially be decided, India will be without two of their first-choice players - Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep. While Akash won India the match in Birmingham, Nitish looked solid at Lord's, just his second outing of the have picked up injuries, and painfully so. Nitish has been ruled out for the remainder of the series, and Akash is out of the fourth not all. India also do not have Arshdeep Singh available in this Test, who could have been a straight swap for Akash in the overcast conditions of things stand, India might have to hand a debut to Anshul Kamboj, unless they want to go with Prasidh Krishna — the only fit pacer left on the the injury pile-up in the bowling department will keep the management busy, there's some good news in the batting. Rishabh Pant has made a full recovery and will take the gloves in the fourth means India don't have to play Dhruv Jurel as a specialist keeper, which eases some of the pressure on team balance and Fire to Damp ManchesteradvertisementIt's been raining in Manchester in the build-up to the fourth Test of the series. But if both teams walk the talk, there will be no shortage of fire in this game. England captain Ben Stokes has said he will not back down from a fight in the fourth Test, especially after the way India behaved at Lord' as mentioned earlier, is perhaps looking for a scrap too, and maybe that is exactly what this Indian team needs. The group has been riddled with injuries heading into a high-stakes clash, and a little bit of edge might just be the lift they be told, the hugs at the end of the Lord's Test have probably been forgotten. And both teams are looking to fight it out tooth and nail in Weather ReportAccording to the BBC Weather forecast, Manchester is expected to remain cloudy throughout the opening day, July 23, with light rain chances gradually rising from the afternoon - peaking at around 29 percent by the are expected to stay on the lower side compared to London, hovering between 14 degrees in the morning and climbing to a high of 20 degrees during the day. Across the five days from July 23 to 27, conditions are expected to stay chilly and unsettled, with temperatures ranging from 13 to 23 Pitch ReportOld Trafford is generally considered a good batting venue in England. Teams can expect to score 350-plus in the first innings, and chase totals of around 200 in the fourth. The surface usually doesn't offer much for spinners, so pace is likely to vs England Predicted Playing XIsEngland have already announced their playing XI.
