LUNCHTIME sees a steady stream of workers, students and retirees queuing at a Malay food stall in Petaling Jaya.
They are drawn by the promise of affordable dishes that taste like they are home-cooked.
While the sales and service tax has nudged prices up across the city, the stall here has stayed true to its promise, keeping portions generous and prices low.
It is like a small act of kindness in a city where every ringgit counts.
Just past noon, the line at Gerai Kak Sofie, a nasi campur stall, stretches well past the faded stall located in Kompleks Pasar dan Medan Selera PJ, Section 14.
Inside, bubbling pots of ayam masak merah, ayam goreng berempah, fried ikan bilis sambal, refreshing local salads (kerabu) and savoury gulai tempt the senses, reminding visitors of village kitchens from yesteryear.
I have frequented this stall for the last 10 years and I can vouch that the food is always good and fresh and most importantly, affordable.
Gerai Kak Sofie at the Section 14 food court has a steady stream of loyal customers comprising mostly office workers.
From Monday to Friday, stall owner Sofie Othman, 53, starts her day at the stall at 6.30am selling breakfast items, namely nasi lemak, fried mee hoon, fried rice and fried koay teow.
At the same time, she is busy preparing over 40 dishes for the lunch crowd.
She has diligently run this food business since 1994.
'We have managed to not increase prices of our dishes for a long time.
'The number of dishes we cook varies every day,' she said.
The long line of mostly office workers from the Section 14 commercial area is a clear indication of the value for money offered by Gerai Kak Sofie.
At the stall, the queue starts at a corner where each diner gets a plate of rice before going on to pick from hot dishes like asam fish, fish curry, masak lemak, ayam goreng berempah, ayam goreng ala KFC, ikan keli goreng, paru goreng, and sweet and sour fish, to name a few.
The customer then joins the line towards another row of tantalising dishes comprising kerabu daun selom, salted fish, mango salad, fried tempeh, and condiments like air asam and sambal belacan to top it off.
Standing at the end of the line is Sofie, who handles the till while juggling delivery orders.
My plate of ayam goreng berempah, kerabu daun selom, cucumber-pineapple salad, fried ikan bilis and ladles of mixed lauk came up to an affordable RM11.
My colleague had something similar and was pleasantly delighted too at the price of her lunch.
Gerai Kak Sofie opens from 6.30am to about 4pm.

My advice to less fortunate friends is: study diligently, and God willing, doors will open. High determination will surely yield results,' she said confidently. In contrast, Kudat native Edmond Linggahan Formon, 17, took the pressure of being the eldest child — often seen as an inspiration and benchmark by his three younger siblings — as a positive challenge. He, who dreamt of studying abroad, never imagined it would come true upon receiving a Petronas scholarship for a Chemical Engineering course in Australia. 'We knew about scholarships in secondary school, so I wanted a prestigious one like Petronas — it's like a dream come true. Edmond For disabled father Azali Mahmud, 54, from Ranau, tears of gratitude flowed as he watched his youngest daughter, Auni Athirah Azali, 18, stand on stage as Petronas scholarship recipient. His disability, confining him to a wheelchair for the past five years, has not stopped him from fulfilling his duty to educate his four children. He is Auni's motivator, encouraging her to pursue academic excellence as she begins an Economics course at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM). 'Auni is my second child sponsored by Petronas; her elder brother is now an engineer at Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC). My condition inspires them. Even in hardship, if we have true spirit and strong dreams to advance ourselves, we can overcome anything. Construction players likely to gain from 13MP
Construction workers are pouring and compacting concrete at a construction project site near Damansara, Kuala Lumpur.— MUHAMAD SHAHRIL ROSLI/The Star PETALING JAYA: The local construction sector is poised to benefit from the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), supported by higher total development expenditure of RM611bil. On July 31, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a higher allocation of development expenditure for the construction sector to RM430bil. 'Although only RM430bil will be financed by the government, it is still 8% higher than the RM400bil expenditure allocated to the 12MP,' said Maybank Investment Bank Research (Maybank IB). On that note, Maybank IB said the higher spending plan could translate into a greater number and value of contracts to be awarded over the next five years. The research house noted that the previous increase in development spending under the 12MP, which was 54% higher than the 11MP, had already led to a meaningful rise in infrastructure job flows. 'Thus, we believe the 13MP is positive for the Malaysian construction industry,' it stated. While the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit 3 (KVMRT3) was not mentioned in the 13MP, ports appeared as the megaprojects under the new masterplan. This came as a surprise for Maybank IB, given the optimism surrounding the project just two weeks prior. It is worth noting that KVMRT1 and KVMRT2 yielded large-scale job opportunities valued at RM21bil and RM31bil, respectively. On a brighter note, capital expenditure for the Carey Island cargo port is estimated at RM28bil until 2060, while the Westports 2 expansion is RM12.6bil over the next 30 years. The Port of Tanjung Pelepas expansion is projected at RM4.9bil. 'We estimate that they could avail a whopping RM45.5bil worth of jobs,' said the research house, adding that potential beneficiaries of the port megaprojects include Muhibbah Engineering (M) Bhd , IJM Corp Bhd and WCT Holdings Bhd . Other than ports, the 13MP also outlines potential projects involving water, flood mitigation, industrial parks, highways, roads and hospitals. These sectors form part of broader national plans, including the Water Sector Transformation Plan 2040 and the Flood Mitigation Plan. 'In our view, potential beneficiaries which are likely to benefit the most from the aforementioned projects are IJM, Gamuda Bhd and WCT. These three companies have the experience and expertise to construct most of the aforementioned infrastructure assets. 'We also flag Cahya Mata Sarawak Bhd as a prime beneficiary of continued infrastructure investments in Sarawak,' said Maybank IB.

Workshop gives students in JB the scoop on journalism
D'Silva: Journalism workshop to cultivate an interest in the craft among secondary students. SOME 70 Form Four students from schools in Johor Baru will get newsroom experience through a two-day journalism workshop organised by the Johor English Language Teaching Association (Jelta). The Craft of News Writing programme at Ibis Styles Johor Iskandar Puteri, taking place until tomorrow, is sponsored by University Book Store Malaysia and the hotel. Jelta president Vincent D'Silva said the workshop was aimed at cultivating interest in journalism among secondary students while helping them understand the importance of news writing in today's society. 'The occupation excites interest, but there is little knowledge outside the industry about its goals, methods and its utility to society,' he told StarMetro. 'This workshop would go some distance in showing what is involved in writing the first draft of the story.' D'Silva added that the workshop would start by introducing the participants to common newsroom jargon and industry terminology. The speakers comprising veteran journalists and media practitioners, he said, would share insights into their respective areas of expertise, covering topics ranging from hard news reporting to media ethics and digital journalism. D'Silva said among the presenters would be former The Star sports reporter Rizal Abdullah, who would be discussing on how social media reshaped sports coverage. Former The Star photographer Kenneth Wong was also expected to highlight the power of visual storytelling. University Book Store Malaysia managing director Keith Thong would be presenting a session on how newspaper technology is being integrated into modern education settings. 'This course will cover the basics of news writing in its various forms,' D'Silva said. 'While the focus is mainly on newspapers, we will also touch on magazine and online content. 'Students will learn the structure of a news story using the classic inverted pyramid style. 'They will also explore how to write different types of articles from hard news to features, reviews, interviews and social media content.' Another subject for the students is writing with speed and accuracy under deadline pressure – a hallmark of the journalistic craft. 'At the end of the programme, students will be tasked with a project where they will analyse different types of news stories and break down their structure,' added D'Silva. The workshop is held in collaboration with Johor Education Department and an online magazine portal. Johor Education Department director Mohd Hanafi Samad will launch the event. D'Silva added that in conjunction with the workshop, six English language teachers would be recognised for their outstanding contributions to language education. 'They will be honoured with the Johor Excellent English Language Teacher Award,' he added.
