Energy storage system based on EV batteries launched at Rome's airport
ROME, June 3 (Reuters) - Italy's largest energy storage system based on used batteries for electric vehicles was inaugurated on Tuesday at Rome's Fiumicino airport to help it reduce carbon emissions.
The system called 'Pioneer' has been developed by Italian utility Enel (ENEI.MI), opens new tab and airport operator ADR and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe, the two companies said in a statement.
It will be used to store energy produced by a solar farm Enel opened in Fiumicino in January.
As Italy rolls out an increasing number of renewable energy projects, it needs storage systems to make energy available when the sun or wind are not powering its green energy plants.
Using material provided by automakers Nissan (7201.T), opens new tab, Mercedes (MBGn.DE), opens new tab and Stellantis (STLAM.MI), opens new tab, 'Pioneer' will turn 762 battery packs and modules that can no longer be used for vehicles into a 10 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system, Enel and ADR said.
That is roughly equivalent to the electricity that would be needed to power 3,000 U.S. homes for a day.
According to Enel and ADR, the system should reduce CO2 emissions by around 16,000 tons over ten years.

Solar mats installed on Warwick district waste recycling trucks
Solar mats have been installed on 20 refuse and recycling trucks across the Warwick technology had been installed in a bid to reduce energy consumption, and it could reduce carbon emissions by about 1.3 tonnes per vehicle per year, Warwick District Council mats work by powering electrical components and equipment in the vehicle, such as air conditioning and Will Roberts said the authority was committed to further reducing carbon emissions from its fleet of waste collection vehicles. "These solar mats will provide a useful solution while we see out the lifespan of the existing fleet of diesel vehicles, after which time we will look to replace the diesel vehicles with low or zero emission alternatives," he council said the project had been funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, with the solar mats installed by transport company Buckley Mays, chief technology officer, said the "ultra-thin" solar panels had been installed on the roof of the vehicles and would "actively" reduce emissions by reducing fuel consumption."The early data captured via the dedicated TRAILAR telematics are impressive and allow Warwick District Council to see and report how much fuel and CO2 each vehicle is saving each day," he explained. Mike Maignan's 'stance on Chelsea move revealed' as Enzo Maresca targets £25m-rated Milan star as Robert Sanchez upgrade
Mike Maignan has clarified his stance on a potential move to Chelsea this summer, according to reports. Mail Sport understands Chelsea are currently trying to negotiate a £10million move for the French international, who has one year remaining on his contract, while AC Milan have valued their goalkeeper at £25m. Chelsea already have five goalkeepers in their squad but none have convinced Blues fans as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season. Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders and Kepa Arrizabalaga are all currently contracted at Stamford Bridge, but they have not persuaded the Chelsea hierarchy against looking for another keeper this window. Indeed, the Blues are lining up a move for Maignan, who is now understood to be keen on playing at Stamford Bridge next season, as per L'Equipe. The shot-stopper has reportedly turned down multiple contract offers from Milan over the past few months, as he has no interest in extending his stay in Italy. It is believed that Chelsea would prefer to sign their man before the Club World Cup begins on June 15, with Maignan also open to this idea. Turning 30 years old next month, Maignan does not want to waste time, and is desperate to play Champions League football. Milan missed out on European qualification last season after sinking to a disappointing eighth-place finish - a huge decline from being Serie A runners-up in 2023-24. Mail Sport understands that a decision on Maignan's future is all down to whether Milan want to risk him leaving on a free transfer next summer or allow him to depart for a fee this year. The Frenchman joined Milan from Lille back in 2021 and has been a consistent performer for the Italian giants over the last four seasons. Despite the club having a poor 2024-25 campaign, Maignan still managed to keep 13 clean sheets. Since joining Milan, he has lifted the Serie A title in 2022 and the Italian Super Cup in 2024. In 163 appearances for the Italian heavyweights, Maignan has kept 59 clean sheets.
