Zahid on four-day working visit to Britain
LONDON: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is set to undertake a four-day working visit to Britain from June 1 to 4.
Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, will be accompanied by senior government officials from the Foreign Ministry, Rural and Regional Development Ministry, and Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry.
The visit comes on the heels of recent high-level engagements between Malaysia and the UK, including Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit in January and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof's visit in April, signalling Malaysia's commitment to enhancing multilateral and bilateral cooperation.
High Commissioner of Malaysia to the UK Datuk Zakri Jaafar said Malaysia, as the Asean Chair for 2025, will use this opportunity to share the progress achieved under the theme 'Inclusivity and Sustainability' and to discuss future regional strategies and programmes.
"According to the itinerary, Ahmad Zahid and his delegation are expected to arrive at Heathrow International Airport at approximately 8.15pm on June 1," he told reporters at the Malaysian High Commission.
Among the key highlights of the visit is a bilateral meeting scheduled for June 2 with UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Steve Reed, he added.
"The discussion will focus not only on enhancing Malaysia-UK cooperation but also delve into disaster risk management, aligning with Ahmad Zahid's role as Chair of the Central Disaster Management Committee.
On the same day, Ahmad Zahid is slated to deliver a keynote address at the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Forum titled 'Malaysia's TVET Leadership in Asean Building Skills for a Shared Future' at University College London (UCL), Zakri said.
"The forum will gather representatives from Asean missions in the UK, students, university officials, academics, and researchers.
"Later that evening, Ahmad Zahid will host a special gathering with approximately 120 Malaysian students based in the UK, reinforcing the government's engagement with the diaspora community," he added.
Zakri said on June 3, Ahmad Zahid will chair two roundtable meetings—one with UK-based franchise industry players and another with tourism sector agencies.
"He is also scheduled to officiate the UK launch of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, aimed at promoting Malaysia as a premier travel destination for the UK and broader European markets.
"To support this promotional drive, the Deputy Prime Minister will participate in exclusive media interviews with prominent travel publications TTG Media and Wanderlust.
"The visit will conclude with Ahmad Zahid's departure to Geneva on June 4, continuing his overseas engagements," he said.

Traffic jams, sold-out hotels and durian feasts: Penang's tasty chaos as school holidays meet fruit season
GEORGE TOWN, June 2 — The much-anticipated durian season, falling during the school holidays, has once again made Penang a magnet for crowds. Thousands of visitors from across the country, as well as foreign tourists, have been flocking to the state since Thursday, the first day of the school break, with the numbers increasing steadily from Saturday to today. A Bernama survey found that not only were roads leading to Balik Pulau — an iconic destination for durian lovers in Penang — heavily congested, but nearly all major tourist spots such as Penang Hill, Padang Kota and Batu Ferringhi were also packed with visitors. According to durian seller Ahmad Salim Suhaimi, 45, the season for the 'king of fruits' in the state began earlier this month and will last until August, with Balik Pulau continuing to be a hotspot due to its reputation as a producer of premium-quality durians. 'Since Thursday, we've been receiving durian lovers, with the peak occurring from Saturday until today. More visitors, especially from within the country and from abroad — particularly Singapore — have come here to buy and eat durians, causing traffic congestion from Balik Pulau to Teluk Bahang. 'Although the durian season is just beginning and the supply isn't in full swing yet, it's expected to increase in the next one to two weeks. Still, many are visiting now because of the long weekend and school holidays,' he said, adding that he is able to sell hundreds of premium durians daily. It is said that the taste of Balik Pulau durians is uniquely distinctive, with a softer texture and richer flavour compared to durians from other states. — Bernama pic Durian lover Siti Hasmuna Rohaimi, 38, said she and her family travelled from Negeri Sembilan to Penang over the long weekend to enjoy the king of fruits in Balik Pulau. She said the taste of Balik Pulau durians is uniquely distinctive, with a softer texture and richer flavour compared to durians from other states, and that her three children also love the fruit. 'Coming directly to Balik Pulau is more satisfying because you get to enjoy fresh durians — some just fallen from the trees — with unique flavours. What's more, they're cheaper and more authentic than those sold in other states,' she said. Meanwhile, Malaysian Association of Hotels Penang Chapter chairman Datuk Tony Goh said hotel bookings across the state have been near full capacity since Friday, particularly in Batu Ferringhi and George Town, with some hotels even offering durian feast packages at orchards or in open-air settings on hotel grounds. 'The price for durian feast packages at orchards is cheaper — around RM80 to RM100 per person — because the hotels collaborate directly with orchard owners, allowing tourists to enjoy the durians either at the farms or in open areas at the hotel, such as by the beach or poolside,' he said. In addition to durians, tourists are also taking the opportunity to enjoy other attractions on the Pearl of the Orient, such as nasi kandar, street food, beaches, and popular resorts. Penang State Executive Councillor for Tourism and Creative Economy Wong Hon Wai said Penang, especially the resort area of Penang Hill, continues to draw large crowds of tourists from both within and outside the country, including Singapore, where the school holidays have also begun. 'By 6.00am, there are already queues at Penang Hill, even though the funicular train service only starts at 6.30am. The number of visitors has doubled — 8,183 on Saturday and 9,396 yesterday — compared to around 4,000 on regular days,' he said. Apart from the congested roads to Balik Pulau, the Penang Bridge and major roads around the island — especially in George Town and Batu Ferringhi — were also jammed with traffic. Armenian Street remains a popular attraction among tourists. — Bernama pic Locations such as Chew Jetty (also known as Tan Jetty), a small fishing village built over water, Armenian Street, Penang Hill, and Padang Kota are among the major tourist hotspots. — Bernama

‘We're not looking for luxury, just survival': Putra Heights fire victims plead for extended aid as promises stall
PETALING JAYA, June 2 — Victims of the gas pipeline fire in Putra Heights, Subang Jaya, are hoping that temporary aid, such as rental homes, cars and motorcycles previously provided by various parties, can be extended, as some of the assistance has recently expired. Two months after the incident on April 1, some victims are now in a quandary as they are required to return the aid. Mohamad Nasir Ab Hamid, 69, a resident of Kampung Kuala Sungai Baru who was affected by the incident, said his family is currently staying in a small house near their original home with rental support for three months while waiting for their house to be repaired. 'My house was deemed a total loss, with an estimated repair cost of RM150,000, but to this day, the appointed contractor has yet to begin work,' he told Bernama when met in the housing estate today. Mohamad Nasir said the temporary vehicle he received after the incident was also returned last month when the loan period ended. 'For daily errands, if I need a car, I use a Kancil that I've slowly repaired bit by bit. We're not looking for luxury — just a car that can serve our everyday needs,' said the father of nine. Regarding the repair works on his home, Mohamad Nasir said that for now, his family is trying to carry on with life as usual and understands that it will take time, as many other homes were also destroyed in the incident. 'When the contractor starts the repairs, I want to see how they will go about it and what the situation will be like, because we've yet to be informed how the process will be carried out,' he said. Meanwhile, his wife, Aliyah Ismail, 55, said she was grateful for the assistance received but hoped that cash compensation would also be provided to help victims, especially those left homeless, sustain their livelihoods. Previously a catering business operator, she now sells traditional cakes and snacks, earning between RM20 and RM30 a day to help cover daily expenses, in addition to financial support from her children. Aliyah said that so far, apart from receiving vouchers for electronic goods and other aid, her family has only been informed of assistance for home repairs. 'As of now, we haven't heard anything about compensation — only about home repairs. Compensation should be given. We have no money, no income. Rental is expensive. 'Goods are expensive too, and to restart my catering business, I need to buy a lot of supplies and equipment because everything was destroyed in the fire,' she said. The gas pipeline fire saw flames shoot more than 30 metres high, with temperatures reaching 1,000 degrees Celsius. Firemen took nearly eight hours to fully extinguish the blaze. Eighty-one homes were destroyed, suffering structural damage exceeding 40 per cent, another 81 were partially destroyed, 57 were affected but not burnt, while 218 homes were unaffected in the fire. — Bernama

Indian all-party delegation meets Malaysian leaders in key diplomatic outreach
Kuala Lumpur [Malaysia], June 2 (ANI): An all-party delegation from India, led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, held a series of key diplomatic engagements in Malaysia, meeting with representatives of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), as part of a broader outreach to strengthen regional ties and convey India's stance on peace and counter-terrorism. The first meeting was held with the DAP, where the Malaysian delegation was headed by YB Tuan M. Kulasegaran V. Murugeson, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reforms). The meeting focused on matters of mutual interest, including regional peace, legal cooperation, and the fight against terrorism. The Indian delegation later met with representatives of PKR, the People's Justice Party. The Malaysian side was led by YB Senator Saraswathy Kandasami, Deputy Minister of National Unity. Both meetings highlighted the growing collaboration and diplomatic engagement between India and Malaysia. Expressing concern over the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Malaysian leaders acknowledged India's 'measured' response and reiterated their support for peace and regional stability. Deputy Minister Kulasegaran termed the incident as 'shocking' and said, 'India has taken necessary action. We spoke about Malaysia's concerns, and we feel India took steps to protect its national interest. We hope cross-border terrorism doesn't take place anymore,' he told ANI. Echoing these sentiments, Deputy Minister Saraswathy Kandasami stated that the Indian delegation conveyed a strong message of peace and development. 'The all-party delegation very clearly conveyed the aspiration of the Indian government that India is not at all interested in war,' she told ANI. She emphasised India's economic priorities, saying, 'India, as the world's fourth-largest economy, is focused on continued economic growth with the goal of becoming the third-largest economy.' She added that the delegation urged Malaysia and other regional countries to support this vision by helping convey the message of peace to Pakistan. Reiterating Malaysia's position, she said, 'Our response has been made very clear by our Prime Minister--that Malaysia also has zero tolerance towards any form of violence, be it in any part of the world.' The Indian delegation includes BJP MPs Aparajita Sarangi, Brij Lala, Pradan Baruah, Hemang Joshi; TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee; CPI-M's John Brittas; and Congress leader Salman Khurshid, among others. Their visit is part of a multi-nation tour to brief international partners on India's counter-terrorism efforts and promote regional cooperation. The engagements come in the wake of Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians were killed by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists. The Indian Armed Forces launched precision strikes targeting terror infrastructure across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, neutralising over 100 terrorists from outfits like Jaish-e-Mohammed, Lashkar-e-Taiba, and Hizbul Mujahideen. The delegation's tour includes stops in Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, South Korea, and Singapore, underscoring India's commitment to regional peace, security, and development. (ANI)
