
Pulling a learn-to-read book with six kupu Māori is another educational assault
Six words: m arae, karanga, wharenui, koro, hongi, karakia. These are the controversial words that Erica Stanford and the Ministry of Education believe are so confusing for our tamariki that the book in which they appear, At the Marae – a book from the Ready to Read series designed to teach five-year-olds using a structured literacy model, by decoding (sounding out) words – should not be reprinted.
This is a decision that challenges not only literacy and language-learning principles but also how much we value and uphold our bicultural educational system in Aotearoa.
It may seem like this is a decision based purely on educational theory and pedagogy. However, this is where opinions are divided. Education vs politics is a common battleground in New Zealand, but this issue goes straight to the heart of how we value and respect the culture and heritage of our tangata whenua. Māori are the indigenous people of this country and it is essential we revitalise and normalise the use and value of te reo Māori in all settings, especially in our schools. Te reo Māori should not be weaponised as a political tool to sow racism and division.
In 1958, my mother was seven years old and about to emigrate from Britain to Aotearoa. My grandfather told the family that when they reached New Zealand, they would learn to speak Māori because that was the language of the indigenous people. Unfortunately, his excitement at this new language and culture awaiting them only lasted as long as their voyage here. But that story has always lived in my heart as I struggled over the last four decades to understand why reo Māori was not given the place it deserves in Aotearoa.
For us to be fighting for the addition of six kupu Māori in a book for children, 67 years later, feels regressive at best, and like cultural violence at worst. To assume that our tamariki at five years old are incapable of learning six reo Māori words is insulting to our children, our teachers and our nation.
Recently released documents showed Erica Stanford personally directed the Ministry of Education to stop producing texts in the Ready to Read series with Māori words in them. This decision was based on the premise that structured literacy and phonics now teach children to decode words, learning letters and blending sounds together. Māori words fall under the category of 'heart' words – words that must be learned by sight or memory, instead of being decoded.
Structured literacy purists believe the amount of heart words must be kept to a minimum, because they increase cognitive load, or mental effort. This is where children need reading and spelling to become automatic processes in the brain, so the cognitive load is reduced. This opens up other pathways in the brain to be utilised for more sophisticated learning later on.
However, there are also many benefits to be had from learning more than one language, especially at five years old. And new entrants are more than capable of learning and retaining other heart words, especially ones that are directly related to the language and culture of our indigenous people. The research is divided about how we add other languages into a pure structured literacy approach when children are learning to read. But one thing is certain – te reo Māori is not only the official language of New Zealand, it is also one of our greatest taonga. As such, it must be included and valued in our schools and society.
The value of taking home a book that includes your culture and language to share with your whānau while you learn to read cannot be underestimated. This helps tamariki to feel their way of life and language is visible and normalised – that it has value and mana. If children do not feel their culture and language are reflected in their education, then they can feel alienated from school and learning. Many Māori students and their whānau have experienced the pain and frustration of feeling isolated and misunderstood in their schooling. Once that process of alienation starts, it is very difficult to reverse it.
Sadly, the alienation of Māori from education has had enormous consequences in New Zealand.The biggest inequities between Pākehā and Māori start early, at school. Recent statistics show 28% of Māori students left school in 2024 with no qualifications, while only 14% of Pākehā did. The refusal to reprint At the Marae feeds into a pathway of systemic racism that exists in our education system and beyond.
Words, language and literacy matters. But what matters more is the mana and pride tamariki feel when their language and culture is valued and respected. Te reo Māori is a taonga, a living and breathing treasure that is passed down through the generations. It must be protected, celebrated and, most of all, spoken.
Our role as educators should never be to diminish or devalue any language or words, but to raise up and nurture all language and literacy. To restrict or eliminate the ability of our students to learn te reo Māori is to commit cultural violence against Māori. Now, those six words will be remembered as the start of yet another educational assault against indigenous people.

Local elections 2025: Newcomer Greg McPhee makes bid for Whanganui mayoralty
McPhee said the council had done well to get the average rates rise to 2.2% for 2025/26. 'I reckon I can get it to zero or better, and still be moving forward. 'I'm here to break down some of the pomp and ceremony of councils. I'm definitely not here for the salary.' McPhee said he was a big advocate for mental health. Whanganui's homelessness situation deserved more attention, and he believed people needed to help themselves 'or they've got to want help'. 'All these church groups that play a role, and other groups involved in the whole mental health/homeless/kids-out-of-control situation, need to get down to the grassroots and be talking one-on-one. 'That's something I'm keen to get involved in. 'I also know there are a lot of lonely older people out there. Maybe we can set up a hotline so people can go and mow their lawns if they're struggling, on a volunteer basis.' He said the council owned a lot of buildings in the district and one could be turned into a community centre. There should be free parking in central Whanganui, McPhee said. 'Taking $70 out of the average family person's pay packet for a parking offence is pretty tough going.' Councils set the price for per-hour parking charges but the Government is responsible for setting infringements. He said he did not want to make big plans before getting his head around council facts and figures, and where its balance sheet sat. 'Getting good cohesion, teamwork and a good fun spirit within the dynamics of the council itself is a good starting point. 'Right from the lowest-paid council team member to the chief executive, everyone has a role to play and is equally important.' McPhee said he was not interested in putting up billboards around town during the campaign - 'that money is better off going to charity' - and would not participate in meet-the-candidates events. 'In some ways, it's a bit of an insult to people that are going to vote, they've got someone's mug thrown at them while they're going about their Sunday drive.' He ran for the Wellington City Council in 2010, in the Paekawakawa Southern Ward, but lost to Paul Eagle. He is also running for a councillor seat in Whanganui. 'I'm not really prepared to go along to residents [and ratepayers] association meetings because, when I've run [for council] in the past, it's usually family, friends or aligned party faithful who have already made up their minds. 'No billboards, no bulls***, let's get on with it.' A referendum on Māori wards will run at the same time as this year's election. McPhee said he would form his own opinion on their retention but it was up to the people to decide. If elected, there would be a revolving door policy, not an open door policy for his office, he said. 'If you've got something to contribute and say, you come in. 'If you're full of s*** and wasting my time, the door will flick you straight back out.' He said he had a long association with Whanganui, particularly through motorsport, which was a major passion. 'I've got a lot of mates who live here who retired from Wellington. 'You pop around for a cup of tea, then take the bike out through the Paraparas and down through Pipiriki and Jerusalem.' Reclaiming the sacred: How we can begin to decolonise ourselves
Decolonisation isn't dependent just on systems-level change, but also change at an individual level, argues Kingi Snelgar. We are often defined by what we do – our jobs, our roles as parents, or our achievements. Rarely are we asked to reflect on who we are at our essence, or what values truly drive our existence. The term decolonisation has become a powerful rallying cry among indigenous peoples and others seeking to reclaim autonomy and self-determination. From iwi and hapū here in Aotearoa to movements in Palestine and beyond, decolonisation signals a call to undo the legacy of imposed power and restore relationships based on reciprocity, respect and justice. But what exactly is decolonisation? At its core, decolonisation is the dismantling of structures, policies and ideas that were imposed – often violently and without consent – on peoples, societies and lands. In Aotearoa, te Tiriti o Waitangi envisioned protection and co-existence between iwi, hapū and the Crown. It was meant to prevent colonisation but that is exactly what unfolded. The call to honour te Tiriti continues to this day. Decolonisation involves structural and institutional transformation, requiring those in power to return it to those from whom it was taken. However, history shows power is rarely relinquished voluntarily. There's an irony here: just as Māori rangatira did not cede sovereignty through te Tiriti, today's power-holders often resist meaningful shifts in authority, even when their legitimacy is rooted in colonisation. Colonisation did not just take away land, but it disrupted identity and mauri. It made whakapapa – our ancestral connection – linear, and wairua something to be silenced or forgotten through the likes of the Tohunga Suppression Act 1907. Many of us learned our culture from books or courses outside our whakapapa network, not from our elders or the environment. The journey to reclaim our life essence and purpose involves knowing and understanding the context that led us to this point of disconnection in the first place. For tauiwi, particularly Pākehā, there is a parallel invitation to remember their place within a greater whakapapa – a cosmic, ecological web in which humans are not at the centre, but part of a wider, sacred whole. The call to connect with mauri and values is universal, not just Māori. Like many other colonised nations, Aotearoa lives with significant disparity between Māori and Pākehā – especially in health, education and incarceration – driven by the enduring impacts of colonisation. While structural change is crucial to decolonisation, a deeper question remains around what steps each of us could take on this journey. We must reframe decolonisation – not as a political or institutional movement, but as a deeply personal and spiritual journey. This isn't to diminish the importance of structural change, but to remind ourselves of the mana we each hold – as individuals, whānau and communities – to reclaim who we are through our whakapapa. In doing so, we begin to decolonise not only our systems, but our spirits. Change begins with the individual. Within the current political system, we cannot afford to wait for systems to shift. Transformation starts when we create space to remember who we are. In remembering, we ignite the seeds of transformation that lie within us. E koru au e ngaro, he kākano i ruia mai i Rangiātea. I will never be lost, I am a seed sown from greatness. Ideas like intergenerational trauma and healing are not merely political or academic concepts – they are deeply spiritual. As our whakapapa reminds us, trauma and pain can linger in our bodies, in our fears and silences. Mamae and hara are carried like echoes through generations. To decolonise the wairua is to tend to these unseen wounds through reconnection to self, to whakapapa, whenua and atua. This is a journey undertaken not just for ourselves, but our past and future generations who have and will carry this mamae. The whare tapa whā model, a Māori health model developed by Sir Mason Durie in 1984, is an excellent example of understanding the holistic Māori view that different aspects of our wellbeing are interconnected. It discusses the need to balance spirit, mind, body and family, and is deeply rooted in Māori culture. The spiritual pillar is where I am drawn, for in the unseen, much transformation can occur. The disconnection from spirit is not unique to us. Across the world, many have become connected to superficial sources of wellness – material possessions, social status or social media validation – while deeper roots of connection to nature and spirit remain neglected. Decolonisation of the self, or decolonising the wairua, begins with humility. It is an act to reclaim tino rangatiratanga over our identity, mauri, our stories and our sacred connection to whenua, atua and each other. If collectives in power struggle to relinquish control, then perhaps we too struggle, on an individual level, to let go of the illusion that we are in control. Recent environmental events serve as a reminder of our vulnerability. For me, decolonisation calls us to surrender – not in defeat, but in reverence – to the truth that we are not the centre, but a single thread woven through the living web of whakapapa. This is not a journey with a fixed destination, but a lifelong one that leads to profound transformation. And it could begin with simple, sacred acts like: Decolonisation is not only about political justice – it is about soul justice. It is the sacred act of remembering who we are, where we come from, and what we are responsible for. In an age of hyper-individualism and fractured belonging, soul justice may be one of the most urgent kaupapa of our generation. Imagine an Aotearoa where wairuatanga is not just predominantly in pōwhiri or tangihanga, but in every classroom. Where our justice system becomes a place of healing. Where governance is rooted in whakapapa and collective wellbeing. Picture an Aotearoa where our mokopuna inherit more than laws and land – a living whakapapa system grounded in aroha, care and interconnection with each other, the whenua and all beings.

Update On Voter Deregistration
Te Pāti Māori Co-leaders, Rawiri Waititi and Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, say they are not satisfied with the Electoral Commission's response to concerns over the mass removal of voters from the roll, calling it a poor excuse that fails to address the real issue. In a formal reply to Te Pāti Māori, the Commission blamed the dormant roll process, where voters are shifted off the main roll if mail is returned and they cannot be contacted. By law, the Commission is meant to make reasonable efforts to contact voters before placing them on the dormant roll. 'They can dress it up however they want, but whānau are being kicked off without knowing it, and that's an attack on our mana and our rights' said Ngarewa-Packer. 'We've got kaumātua who've lived in the same whare all their lives, never missed a vote, and never had a knock on the door, a text, an email- nothing. 'This is not a mistake. It's voter suppression.' Te Pāti Māori has demanded an urgent briefing with the Commission and an urgent inquiry into the enrolment system, dormant roll processes, and the scale of deregistration hitting Māori and Pasifika communities. 'If we're not satisfied with the response, we'll be lobbying the Government to initiate a Royal Commission of Inquiry' said Waititi. 'Our tīpuna fought to have the right to vote, we will not stand by while Māori are quietly scrubbed from the roll.'
