An Edmonton hotel ‘steeped in history' turns 110

Archival video from CFRN News of renovations at Edmonton's Hotel Macdonald in 1991. Edmonton's 'chateau on the river' is celebrating its 110th anniversary. Fairmont Hotel Macdonald, the luxury hotel overlooking the North Saskatchewan River, is almost as old as the city itself. General manager Cole Millen said it's 'pretty special' to be a part of something that's been around for so long. 'Everyone's so proud of the hotel. They were here for a wedding. They were here for their first drink when they turned 18. They celebrated a graduation here,' Millen said. 'Everyone's got a story to tell about the hotel, and everyone seems to have a sense of pride about it.' Fairmont Hotel Macdonald The Fairmont Hotel Macdonald in Edmonton. (Dave Mitchell/CTV News Edmonton) Despite changing with the times, Millen said people can still tell that the location is 'steeped in history.' 'I think when you step through the doors, you can still recognize and appreciate that you're in a building that has some character and some heritage to it,' he said. In 2024, the hotel went through a renovation of 165 of its guest rooms and meeting space. 'So everything looks pristine and new the way that guests expect, but still has that heritage,' Millen said. 'I think more and more people are looking for that.' Expand Autoplay 1 of 3 Fairmont Hotel Macdonald Fairmont Hotel Macdonald renovations in 1991. (CTV News Edmonton) 'The historic properties have a unique charm about them that you just can't recreate these days.' The hotel was Edmonton's first-ever designated heritage spot, after former Mayor Terry Cavanagh petitioned for it in the eighties. Its status means the facade of the building is protected and many of the core elements – the Wedgwood ceiling, the Confederation lounge, the staircase and banister – will remain the same for generations. Millen said despite its reputation for luxury, he's happy that Fairmont Hotel has become more accessible to everyone visiting. He reflected that the very definition of what luxury is has evolved with the hotel over time. 'Now you can come in, and you'll certainly still see people who are dressed up, but people are much more comfortable …. And feeling very much at home,' he said. 'And we want people to feel like it's their home.' With files from CTV News Edmonton's Dave Mitchell

Modern luxury home with a triple garage sold above neighbourhood average price

10951 130 St., N.W., Edmonton Asking price: $1,998,000 (June, 2025) Selling price: $1,975,000 (July, 2025) Taxes: $15,097 (2024) Days on the market: 18 Listing agents: Clare Packer and Cathy Cookson, Re/Max Excellence Five kilometres west of downtown Edmonton, bungalows from the 1940s are a more common sight than newer properties, like this two-storey house with a detached triple garage and suite. Only a few buyers and about 15 agents viewed the property as one individual negotiated a $1,975,000 deal within a few days of its debut. Conditions were waived two weeks later. 'Over a two-year span, the average days on market in Westmount is 45 days and the average price is $675,000, so this sold exceptionally quickly and way above the average in the neighbourhood,' said agent Clare Packer. 'It's the highest single-family, detached home sale in the entire community by over $100,000.' The property's premium price is mostly attributed to its uncommon features. 'It's new, it's huge with over 3,000 square feet, and it was exceptionally well built,' Ms. Packer said. 'Garage suites are attractive and have a lot of appeal to them, but they are expensive to build. It's like building another little house, so this one's unique.' In 2021, a 48- by 140-foot corner lot was redeveloped with this three-bedroom house and a garage with a one-bedroom suite, complete with a kitchen, bathroom and balcony. The primary residence has a modern farmhouse style and 3,147 square feet of living space, including a loft upstairs, an office off of the foyer and an open kitchen with an island and butler's pantry. Upscale appointments include a white brick fireplace in the living room, vaulted wood ceilings in two bedrooms and herringbone tile work in one of four bathrooms. Ceilings rise 11 feet above recreation and guest rooms in the basement. 'Westmount is a beautiful, mature neighbourhood,' said Ms. Packer. 'It's in proximity to the river valley trail system and downtown as well.'
