'Amazon's ice maker is my most useful summer purchase'

Daily Mirror08-07-2025
Shoppers have hailed it a 'life changing' kitchen gadget
There's little better than an ice cold drink on a clammy summer's day, but trying to find ice in the supermarkets and get it home before it melts can be a real faff. It's no surprise then that when a friend introduced me to the Amazon Silonn Portable Countertop Ice Maker, it turned out to be the kitchen gadget I never knew I needed.
At £65.99, the ice maker is a great warm weather investment, but I use mine year-round for hosting, homemade iced coffees, smoothies, cocktails, and to elevate my evening Diet Coke fix. I also think it's a great gift for someone who's hard to buy for as it's practical but won't break the bank. With BBQ season in full swing, I'd say now is the perfect time to snap one up.
It seems I'm not the only one who loves this nifty gadget either, as the Silonn Portable Countertop Ice Maker has an average 4.3 star rating on Amazon from over 20,000 reviews. One happy shopper said: 'You will be delighted you bought this! Life changing!'
Another reviewer also heaped praise on the gadget saying: 'Great machine, really easy to set up and use. Really quick ice cubes, if you set it to large ice cubes and leave it 30 minutes you get a full tray. Highly recommended.'
Personally, I find the ice maker handy as you simply add water to the reservoir, turn it on, and your ice tips into a tray where you can use the provided scoop to serve. It starts making ice in just six minutes, which is great if you have last minute plans. You'll hear the ice drop once it's ready, and a light on the machine indicates when the water tank needs refilling.
Also available is the Debenhams Pro Breeze Countertop Ice Cube Maker at £68 which one reviewer described as the 'best thing I have ever bought', and the Cookworks 1.8L Ice Cube Maker which can be purchased at Argos for £120. It holds around 100 ice cubes making it ideal if you often host.
One of the downsides of the Amazon ice maker is that it needs to be cleaned regularly and it can be a little fiddly to do. It does boast a self-cleaning function, but I find mine needs a manual wipe round too. However, if you empty the water tank when you turn the machine off it helps, and I personally feel it's a small price to pay for the convenience of ice on tap.
Some reviewers agreed, with one noting: 'It's great, it works well and it's everything you'd want, but it requires a lot of maintenance.' Another said 'self cleaning doesn't mean 'no cleaning.''
Maintenance aside, the portable ice machine also won't look out of place in your kitchen thanks to the sleek black design. It also doesn't take up a huge amount of space making it ideal for smaller countertops.
It's no surprise then that most of the product's reviews are overwhelmingly positive, with one happy shopper who titled their review 'It's worth the money' saying: 'I have found the ice making machine fantastic. It makes plenty of ice. If water runs out it stops, gives indication then starts up again. If the internal ice bucket is full, again it stops automatically. Empty the bucket and it starts up again automatically.'

Argos shoppers rush to buy Apple AirPods worth £229 as they plummet in flash sale

Apple's AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) have a six-hour battery life and adaptive noise cancellation for the best listening experience. Apple users know all too well how expensive the products are. One of the tech giant's most popular accessories is its AirPods, which are seldom reduced. However, for a limited time only, Argos has reduced the price of Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) to £189, down from £229 - a saving of £40. Designed with Active Noise Cancellation, Transparency mode and Adaptive Audio, the AirPods automatically tailor noise-control in different environments so wearers get the best listening experience. They also have a built-in speaker and lanyard loop so they can be attached at a user's leisure. The Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen) feature touch-activated side controls and a battery life of up to six hours. For instance, these JLab Go Air Sport+ Running Headphones (£29.99) feature a hook on each bud for a secure fit. They also have nine hours of playtime in each earbud and 26 extra hours from the charging case. Shoppers looking to go the whole hog can invest in Apple's AirPods Max headphones, which are on sale on EE for £465, normally £495. Described as the 'ultimate listening experience', they are offered in five colourways and feature Pro-level Active Noise Cancellation tech and a Digital Crown to play and pause music. Returning to the Argos deal on Apple AirPods Pro (2nd Gen), one buyer commented: "I absolutely love my AirPods. The noise cancellation and conversation awareness are an absolute delight." Another person commented: "Bought this a couple of months ago. I'm so happy with the product, very good and amazing." A third buyer described them as 'good, comfy with seamless connectivity', but found issues with them syncing to an iPhone, commenting: "The only issue I've had so far is when I open the case, my flatmates iPad and iPhone have a pop up saying 'not your AirPods' no way of stopping it happening. So, on that one fault, I can't recommend." An additional buyer said: "It's been over two months since I bought this device, and it's been awesome." A fifth buyer wrote: "Upgraded from the Pro1s that I bought back in 2021, these are a massive upgrade." Another Argos shopper concludes: "I bought these a couple of months ago and they work amazingly. They have loads of features, such as noise cancellation. In addition, the battery life is outstanding. One charge lasts me a week." Android users can opt for a pair of Galaxy Buds3 Pro for £219. Offered in silver or white, they have a two-way speaker for enhanced audio quality or call-taking, Galaxy AI-boosted Noise Control technology and small, angled heads for wearer comfort. For a cheaper option, these Galaxy Buds FE are on sale at Currys for £69, down from £99. They also have noise-cancellation and a six-hour battery life.

It also features a 1.5-litre water tank and 500ml milk tank. Potential customers can find reviews and ratings on Amazon. One buyer said: "It's very easy to use. Espresso has a nice crema, and it makes a perfect frothy cappuccino. Of course, using good quality coffee is essential for good results, but even good coffee can be spoiled by a not-so-good machine! No need to worry about that with this machine, though. It also looks pretty good sitting in my kitchen." Another Amazon customer expressed disappointment with the frother, writing: "Makes a decent coffee and easy to use. Wand will only steam the milk to boiling, not froth it so a bit disappointing." A selection of the drinks the machine can make (Image: Amazon) For those looking for alternatives, this Nespresso by De'Longhi CitiZ Pod Coffee Machine from Argos is £175. The pod machine automatically switches off after nine minutes of not being used. It also has two cup positions, one for espresso cups and one for latte macchiato glasses. Meanwhile, Lakeland has a Swan Pump Espresso Coffee Machine for £119.99. The retro-design grey machine features wood-effect hardware and can whip up espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, and more.
