Second half goals from Eliezer Mayenda, Daniel Ballard and Wilson Isidor sent the Stadium of Light into bedlam and the underdogs top of the table.
But for West Ham, it was a frustrating reminder that they are miles away from where they would like to be under Potter.
That frustration spilled out onto social media as plenty of Hammers fans vented their anger online.
One wrote: "Potter has to go tonight, that's a dreadful start".

While another added: "Can't see Graham Potter making it to mid-season."
A third fumed: "Sack Graham Potter today. He has no idea how to fix the same issues West Ham have had for the past couple of seasons. Embarrassment to lose this".
And a fourth posted: "This man is not a Premier League quality manager. He should stand down."
One other fan even claimed: "Potter will be fired before December".

Two of those five wins have come against relegated opposition in Ipswich and Leicester.
Moment Graham Potter 'loses entire West Ham fanbase in 20 seconds' with shocking Tottenham comments_1
Potter's win percentage is just 25 per cent across all competitions - the lowest of any West Ham manager in history with a minimum of 20 games in charge as per Transfermarkt.
Things don't get any easier for Potter this season either, with clashes against Chelsea, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham on the horizon.
Potter speaks out
Speaking after the game the manager said: "I was happy with our performance in the first half. I think we did a lot of things well.
"We were unlucky not to score. We quietened the crowd and felt in control of large parts of the game."
Adding: "The second half wasn't good enough. We need to get better, we need to improve, we need to understand what happened."
In his press conference he was more damning: 'I'd rather focus on what we need to do today. If we don't do the basics right in football, you can bring player and player and player and player in and it's not going to solve the problems.
'The problems are we didn't defend well enough at some actions and then we paid a heavy, heavy price, which you can do in this league. So that's what we have to focus on.'
Potter was tearing his hair out as Mayenda and Ballard were both allowed to head home before Isidor sealed it at the death on the counter.
He added: 'With the greatest respect, it's not Niall Quinn playing. We're disappointed with that.
'We have to deal with those situations. It's not like we were cut open and pushed back for periods of time. It wasn't like that. It was just balls in the box that we didn't do well enough.
'The lads are angry, they're disappointed, they're frustrated.'

Man Utd lose thrilling league opener to Arsenal after Altay Bayindir blunder
Old Trafford rocked as Mikel Arteta's runners-up headed to the rebuilding Red Devils in the most eye-catching fixture of the opening weekend. United looked far better than the side that finished 15th last season – their worst top-flight campaign since 1974 – yet Ruben Amorim's side fell to a 1-0 defeat as Riccardo Calafiori capitalised on Bayindir's early flap. Arsenal's Riccardo Calafiori (centre) celebrates scoring (Nick Potts/PA) The back-up goalkeeper was outmuscled by William Saliba as he attempted to deal with a Declan Rice corner, tipping it on for the defender to nod into an empty net and silence Old Trafford after a bright start. Bayindir's error underlined concerns over the goalkeeping position at Old Trafford, where often unconvincing number one Andre Onana was absent as he works his way back from a hamstring injury. United are a work in progress but summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo looked sharp on their debuts, with Patrick Dorgu hitting a post with a lasered first-half effort. Arsenal keeper David Raya produced a string of important stops to keep the hosts at bay, with his man of the match of the display helping Arteta's side to victory. The atmosphere was as intense as United's start as they flew out the blocks in the summer sun, with Mbeumo getting an early attempt on goal as the hosts bossed play and the early possession. But Arsenal would take the sting out of proceedings with just 13 minutes on the clock. Bayindir flapped at Rice's inswinging corner under pressure from Saliba, with the Turkey international meekly palming on for Calafiori to head over the line. United's appeals for a foul fell on deaf ears as Arsenal scored their 31st Premier League goal from a corner since the start of the 2023-24 campaign – 11 more than any other team. That moment seemed to lead to some of the nervousness within the ground that Amorim referenced ahead of the game, but his side's refreshed approach and personnel helped lift the mood. 🆕🇸🇮🔴 — Manchester United (@ManUtd) August 17, 2025 Mbeumo saw a shot deflect wide before Dorgu followed a burst down the left with a fierce shot that hit the outside of the far post. Cunha looked like United's biggest threat and showed tenacity and confidence in the 32nd minute when his rampaging run from his own half led him to burst through Arsenal bodies and get a shot on Raya's goal. The goalkeeper comfortably dealt with that attempt and another from distance, but he had to be at his best to get a fingertip on the Brazil international's low drive from an acute angle as half-time approached. Arsenal were solid but unspectacular when the second half got under way, with Arteta replacing ineffective debutant Viktor Gyokeres on the hour mark. The Sweden international had shone under Amorim at Sporting Lisbon and had previously been linked with a move to United, whose fans cheered his substitution. United's new frontman Benjamin Sesko was introduced to a huge roar shortly after, offering a tantalising first look at their rebuilt front three. Cunha continued confidently and Mbeumo was a handful, with an acrobatic attempt soon followed by a header that forced a full stretch save from Raya. Sesko nodded across the face of goal as the home side continued to knock on the door, but Arsenal dug deep and Rice saw a whipped free-kick deflect narrowly wide at the other end. United pushed until the end and Cunha saw a penalty claim ignored, but there was no leveller as Arteta's side started the season with a win as '1-0 to the Arsenal' echoed around the ground.

Ruben Amorim defends Altay Bayindir after Man Utd keeper blunder boosts Arsenal
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim defended goalkeeper Altay Bayindir after his blunder proved decisive in a 1-0 home defeat by Arsenal in their Premier League opener. Bayindir flapped at a 13th-minute corner under pressure from William Saliba, allowing Riccardo Calafiori to nod in at the far post. United were otherwise the better team as new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo revitalised their attack, but they could not find a way to beat David Raya despite registering 22 shots on goal. That put the focus even more sharply on Bayindir, who started in place of the injured Andre Onana. 'You're allowed to do a lot of things in the corner, we need to do the same,' Amorim said when asked if he was disappointed with the goal. 'When you touch that way the goalkeeper he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past. 'It is the rules, it is allowed and we need to do the same thing. No, (I'm not saying he should have acted differently) I am saying you choose to push a player or to get the ball, he chose to get the ball but he didn't push so he cannot defend it. 'That is my feeling when I see the play but again, we need to do the same thing.' Last season Bayindir conceded directly from a Son Heung-min corner in a 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham, but Amorim rejected criticism of the Turkey international when asked if he had considered starting third-choice Tom Heaton against a team renowned for their threat from corners. 'He suffered a goal like this where? Against Tottenham? It was without VAR. With VAR it was a foul,' Amorim said. 'Then in the next game against Arsenal, who saved the penalty? Who saved the game? You don't remember the game but I remember the game and Altay was unbelievable in that game. I considered everything to put in one or another and I chose Altay… 'I am happy with the three goalkeepers.' Despite looking much the sharper of the two teams, United could not recover from that early setback as David Raya repelled the best that Cunha and Mbeumo could throw at him, while Patrick Dorgu hit the outside of a post. 'We were the better team but in the end we lost the game,' Amorim said. 'I'm really proud of the work we put on the field and that is important moving forward.' Arsenal took the points but in a poor performance littered with poor passes and sloppy touches, the only other things to take away was their ability to win on a bad day at the office. 'We did very well to take the set-piece and then there's the mistakes, some of them unnecessary, some of them unusual, but the way every single player reacted gave us an opportunity to win the game,' Mikel Arteta said. 'That gives you momentum and confidence, two very important things. Our standards weren't there to be fair, but we can still come away and find a way to win the game. The team has to find that resilience throughout the season for 10 months.'

Roy Keane blasts 'shocking' Arsenal star after win over Manchester United
Roy Keane accused three key Arsenal players of 'not turning up' during their opening Premier League victory over Manchester United. The Gunners, expected to challenge for the title yet again, were not at their best at Old Trafford but sealed the three points thanks to Riccardo Calafiori's 13th-minute header. Declan Rice's inswinging corner looked relatively unthreatening but Altay Bayindir was unable to deal with it under pressure from William Saliba and Calafiori nodded home on the line. Manchester United pushed hard for an equaliser over the next 75 minutes but Arsenal's impressive defence held firm to secure an opening-day win. Despite winning at Old Trafford, Keane was not blown away by Arsenal's performance and said three key players 'didn't turn up'. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. The Manchester United legend was particularly critical of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard, describing his display as 'shocking'. 'This was an Arsenal team where four or five of their players didn't turn up,' Keane told Sky Sports. '[Declan] Rice… Nev [Gary Neville] praised Odegaard, I thought Odegaard was shocking, Saka didn't do too much. 'Players off the bench didn't do too much so this was a below par, poor performance from Arsenal. 'But they got the result so you give them credit. From United's point of view this wasn't a strong Arsenal team coming at them.' Keane added: 'The sign of a really good team is when you're not at your best and you win football matches. 'The worry for me in the second half is there were opportunities to really go at Man Utd, but they seemed off it from that point of view. 'But going forward, competing with the likes of Liverpool and Man City, they seem to want to go for that second or third goal, whereas Arsenal are thinking they'll hold onto the lead. 'That backfired on them last year when they had too many draws. That won't win you league titles and they have to improve. 'Arsenal need to be clinical in their play and really go for that second or third goal.' While his team were not at their brilliant best, Mikel Arteta was full of praise for the 'character' they showed to keep Manchester United at bay after taking the lead. 'Massive win,' he said. 'To go in the first fixture at Old Trafford with that atmosphere, the way they are building momentum, with new signings and excitement around it, it's a great feeling. More Trending 'We talk about character and spirit, that's it. I can make a mistake. How do I react to that? The way everybody tried, the defence was phenomenal.' Asked about Arsenal's title aspirations after three successive second-place finishes, Arteta added: 'I just look at the players' faces and they want much more, and we know that we are much better than in certain moments. 'I think before I came here, it was 18 or 22 years without winning at Old Trafford, and now we come here, we won many times, and are still unsatisfied. 'And I take that as a massive compliment, and as a way to build what we want to build.' For more stories like this, check our sport page.
