Family, associates celebrate Dr Mahathir's 100th birthday with tributes, legacy
by SUFEA SALEHUDDIN A GRAND celebration was held at the Palace of the Golden Horses on Sunday to mark the 100th birthday of Malaysia's longest-serving Prime Minister (PM) Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Hosted by the hotel's founder Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew, the event brought together over 300 guests, including Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, family members, corporate figures, foreign dignitaries and long-time associates of the centenarian. Beyond commemorating a rare personal milestone, the celebration served as a tribute to Dr Mahathir's more than six decades of contributions to national development, with speeches and performances reflecting on his enduring legacy. The ceremony began with a rousing chorus of 'Happy Birthday' from the guests, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and a special video presentation chronicling Dr Mahathir's life — from his early years in Alor Setar, Kedah, to his two terms as Malaysia's fourth and seventh PM. One of the evening's highlights was a musical performance by veteran banker and philanthropist Tan Sri Azman Hashim. In his brief remarks, Lee described Mahathir as 'a symbol of strength, struggle and strategic assurance'. 'He has been sidelined, debated, praised and criticised. But I believe all Malaysians — regardless of race, age or belief — can agree that very few individuals devote their entire lives to the country. Dr Mahathir has done exactly that,' he said. Lee added that the celebration was not only about looking back but also about setting the tone for the country's future. 'This is not just about Dr Mahathir. It is about Malaysia and whether we have the courage to prepare the country for the next 100 years,' he said.

August Volatility Looms For KLCI
Bursa Malaysia Global trade negotiations and upcoming central bank decisions are taking center stage, influencing market movements across Asia, the US, and Malaysia. Investors are navigating a complex landscape marked by a crucial tariff deadline, significant earnings reports, and ongoing policy reviews. Asia Markets Dip Amid Caution Ahead of Key Events Asian markets largely ended lower last week, pulling back from recent rallies driven by optimism over US trade talks and strong second-quarter earnings from Wall Street. Momentum faded as caution set in ahead of several pivotal events: a critical tariff deadline on August 1st, the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) policy decision on July 31st, and a slew of major US economic data releases and corporate earnings. US Markets buoyed by Earnings and Trade Hopes In contrast, US markets saw a positive finish, with the S&P 500 rising 0.4% to notch another record close and the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumping 208 points. This ascent was primarily lifted by continued optimism surrounding the earnings season. So far, 80% of S&P 500 companies reporting have surpassed forecasts, with earnings growth tracking at a robust 7.7%, significantly higher than the 5.8% expected at the start of July. Markets also found support from positive trade developments. On July 28th, the US and the European Union reached a hard-fought trade deal, which will see the bloc face 15% tariffs on most of its exports, including automobiles, but crucially staving off a full-blown trade war. This agreement comes less than a week before President Donald Trump's higher tariffs were set to take effect. The week ahead for US investors will be dominated by the busiest stretch of the earnings season, with key reports from tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, along with Boeing, Procter & Gamble, and numerous other prominent companies. On the macro front, attention will be on the FOMC's policy decision (expected to hold rates steady between 4.25%-4.50% according to market analysts), the advance estimate for US Q2 GDP (forecast to rebound to 2.5%), ADP employment figures, monthly payrolls, and ISM manufacturing data. KLCI Pressured by Local and Global Headwinds The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) mirrored the broader Asian sentiment, falling 6.6 points to close at 1,533.8. The local benchmark was particularly weighed down by a sell-off in Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) shares after the utility giant was slapped with a fresh RM840.13 million tax notice from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) for the Year of Assessment (YA) 2022. This comes shortly after TNB lost a significant RM1.25 billion tax dispute for YA 2018 in the Federal Court earlier this month. Sentiment was further dampened by uncertainty surrounding the US-Malaysia trade deal. Malaysia's firm stance on non-tariff barriers reportedly risks excluding it from favorable terms already secured by ASEAN peers such as Vietnam, the Philippines, and Indonesia, adding to concerns about its trade competitiveness. Foreign investors continued their net selling, marking a third consecutive week of outflows with a net selling of -RM137 million last week. This brings the July month-to-date net outflow to -RM579 million and the year-to-date figure to a substantial -RM12.7 billion. In contrast, local institutions emerged as net buyers, recording +RM93 million for the week (though their weekly net flow was -RM15 million due to the accounting of market transactions, July MTD: +RM506 million; YTD: +RM10.97 billion), and local retailers also showed resilience with +RM18 million (weekly: +RM106 million, July MTD: +RM73 million; YTD: +RM1.72 billion). Technical Outlook and Market Outlook HLIB Research indicates that the KLCI appears to have found temporary support after rebounding from the 1,510 level. The index remains on the cusp of a potential bullish triangle breakout, provided it avoids a decisive fall below 1,510 and 1,520. A breakout above the downtrend line near 1,551 could revive bullish momentum, targeting resistances at 1,563 (200D MA) and 1,575 (50W MA). Conversely, a significant drop below 1,510 could trigger a deeper pullback towards 1,500 and 1,488. For the upcoming week, the KLCI is expected to trade range-bound between 1,518 and 1,551 as investors digest the FOMC outcome and the ongoing US trade negotiations, including those with Malaysia. Caution is likely to prevail amid expectations of a soft August earnings season and the index's historical underperformance in August (with 10-year, 20-year, and 30-year average declines of -0.7%, -1.2%, and -2.2% respectively). Domestic headwinds from subsidy rationalisation and the potential expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) could further dampen consumer sentiment and earnings visibility, adding to the market's cautious outlook. China warns of AI ‘monopoly' as US effort quickens
International cooperation: People watch a robot performing tasks at an exhibition during the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai. Premier Li says going forward, China will seek to propel AI development in the Global South. — AFP SHANGHAI: China will spearhead the creation of an international organisation to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI), the country's premier says, seeking to ensure that world-changing technology doesn't become the province of just a few nations or companies. AI harbours risks from widespread job losses to economic upheaval that require nations to work together to address, Premier Li Qiang told the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Saturday. That means more international exchanges, Beijing's No 2 official said during China's most important annual technology summit. Li didn't name any countries in his short address to kick off the event. But Chinese executives and officials have taken aim at Washington's efforts to curtail the Asian country's tech sector, including by slapping restrictions on the export of Nvidia Corp chips crucial to AI development. On Saturday, Li acknowledged a shortage of semiconductors was a major bottleneck, but reaffirmed President Xi Jinping's call to establish policies to propel Beijing's ambitions. The government will now help create a body – loosely translated as the World AI Cooperation Organisation – through which countries can share insights and talent. 'Currently, key resources and capabilities are concentrated in a few countries and a few enterprises. 'If we engage in technological monopoly, controls and restrictions, AI will become an exclusive game for a small number of countries and enterprises,' Li told hundreds of delegates huddled at the conference venue on the banks of Shanghai's iconic Huangpu river. China and the US are locked in a race to develop a technology with the potential to turbocharge economies and – over the long run – tip the balance of geopolitical power. Last week, US President Donald Trump signed executive orders to loosen regulations and expand energy supplies for data centres – a call to arms to ensure companies like OpenAI and Google help safeguard America's lead in the post-ChatGPT era. At the same time, the breakout success of DeepSeek has inspired Chinese tech leaders and startups to accelerate research and roll out products such as open-sourced models, robots and AI agents. That parade of technology represents Chinese developers' efforts to set world standards and benchmarks, and grab a bigger slice of the global market. They also dovetail with Beijing's broader efforts to ensure self-reliance on critical technologies in the face of tensions between the world's economic superpowers. The weekend conference in Shanghai – gathering star founders, Beijing officials and deep-pocketed financiers by the thousands – is designed to catalyse that movement. This year's attendance may hit a record because it's taking place at a critical juncture in the global race to lead the development of generative AI. It's already drawn some notable figures: Nobel Prize laureate Geoffrey Hinton and former Google chief Eric Schmidt were among industry heavyweights who met Shanghai party boss Chen Jining last Thursday, before they were due to speak at the conference. Going forward, China will seek to propel AI development in the Global South, Li said, referring to a loose gathering that includes Brazil and Africa. Schmidt later echoed Li's call for nations to work together – particularly China and the United States. 'The upsides are phenomenal,' he told delegates. 'As the largest and most significant economic entities in the world, the United States and China should collaborate on these issues,' he said. 'We have a vested interest to keep the world stable, keep the world not at war, to keep things peaceful, to make sure we have human control of these tools.' — Bloomberg
