Madinah leads global discussion on sustainability
The event, titled 'Act Local, Accelerate Global: Advancing Inclusive, Science- and Evidence-Based Solutions for SDG Localization in the Arab Region,' was part of the UN High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development.
It underscored the need for inclusive, data-driven approaches to localize the Sustainable Development Goals effectively and ensure no one is left behind, according to the Saudi Press Agency.
This year's participation reflects the Kingdom's alignment of Vision 2030 with the global SDG framework and highlights Madinah's efforts in localizing the SDGs and adopting the Quality of Life Index initiative.
Albulihshi noted that cities are responsible for implementing 65 percent of the SDGs, adding that the availability and quality of urban data remain major challenges. He stressed the importance of global frameworks in guiding sustainable local development.
The Madinah Region Development Authority showcased its Atlas of Sustainable Development for the city and its neighborhoods, along with a report on building a risk-resilient future — both key tools for informed sustainable development decisions.
Organized by the Madinah Region Development Authority in collaboration with the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia, United Cities and Local Governments Middle East and West Asia, the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, and the World Council on City Data, the event brought together regional and international partners.
On the sidelines, the mayor will meet with local and regional government representatives to discuss cooperation on the UN 2030 Agenda, including governance, inclusive services, and local investment to support regional SDG progress.
The UN forum, running through to July 23, also featured dialogue sessions on global frameworks for resilient urban development and strategies to create value for cities through data-driven trends.

Saudi Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of the Board of the Transport General Authority Eng. Saleh Al-Jasser launched on Wednesday the Initial Operational Phase of Autonomous Vehicles in Riyadh. This milestone marks a significant step aimed at enabling advanced technology and expanding the development of a smart and safe transportation ecosystem in the Kingdom. The initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Transport and Logistics Strategy and is an extension of Saudi Vision 2030 towards adopting sustainable mobility solutions powered by the latest artificial intelligence technologies. This project is the result of an integrated partnership that brings together the transport and logistics ecosystem and relevant stakeholders, including the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology ecosystem, the Saudi Data and AI Authority (SDAIA), the General Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, and the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO), in addition to private sector partners represented by technology and operations partners Uber, WeRide, and AiDriver. The autonomous vehicles in this phase will operate within a real-world environment covering King Khalid International Airport and several key locations across Riyadh, including major highways and selected city center destinations. This phase is implemented under the direct regulatory and technical supervision of the Transport General Authority. The vehicles will transport passengers with a safety officer onboard each vehicle to ensure safety and monitor the performance of smart systems in actual operating conditions. Al-Jasser stressed that the launch of the initial operational phase reflects the Kingdom's ambitious vision to build a smart and integrated transport system that supports economic growth and enhances quality of life. Enabling modern technologies and developing regulatory and operational frameworks are key pillars to expanding the implementation of this technology and supporting the transformation of the transport sector, he added. The initiative is an extension of the Kingdom's efforts to promote sustainability, improve mobility efficiency, and localize innovation. This project represents a pioneering model of public-private partnership, paving the way for a future of safer and smarter mobility, he stated.

DUBAI: Saudi streetwear brand 1886 has landed in Paris with a pop-up outpost at luxury department store Galeries Lafayette. 'Even though our background is not in fashion, we felt it was the right time to bring together our passion for music, art, urban trends and street movements into a brand that could translate our own vision as Saudis.' Saudi delegation arrives in Syria ahead of expected $4bn trade deal signings
RIYADH: A Saudi business delegation led by Investment Minster Khalid Al-Falih has arrived in Damascus ahead of a forum set to generate trade deals worth SR15 billion ($4 billion). More than 120 potential investors have travelled to Syria, as the Kingdom continues to support the country's economic recovery and financial landscape. Syrian news agency SANA reported that the agreements will contribute to promoting sustainable development and economic interests between Syria and Saudi Arabia. The Saudi-Syria Investment Forum is set to generate the multi-billion trade deals, Al Ekhbariya reported, while the Kingdom's Ministry of Investment wrote on X that the event is expected to witness significant participation from public and private sector entities on both sides. Saudi Arabia and Syria have made significant strides in restoring diplomatic ties in recent months, with the Kingdom reopening its embassy in Damascus in 2024 after a 12-year hiatus. In April, Saudi Arabia and Qatar announced a joint initiative to settle Syria's $15 million debt to the World Bank as part of broader efforts to support the financial recovery of the war-torn nation. Last month, Al-Falih conducted a virtual meeting with his Syrian counterpart, Mohammad Al-Shaar, and discussed opportunities for collaboration in both public and private sectors.
