Passenger vehicle sales remain flat in May amid sluggish demand
Sales of cars, sedans and utility vehicles remained largely flat last month, albeit on a high base, amid sluggish consumer demand in the local market.
As per initial industry estimates about 352,000 passenger vehicles were sold last month, which is an increase of about 0.1% over the same period last fiscal.
Automakers in India
mostly report wholesale dispatches from factories to dealerships and not retail sales to customers.
Retail sales are estimated to have dropped by 0.8% in this period, industry insiders said.
A senior industry executive who did not wish to be identified said, 'There is pressure in the market. But we also have to remember that the base is now very high. India is one of the very high markets in the world which is selling more than 4 million passenger vehicles annually. So even if the growth is modest, and is likely to remain so for some time, volumes are still good.'
Demand in the local market continued to be driven by SUVs last month, with companies like Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) clocking robust sales numbers. Market leaders Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai did not release sales numbers for May Sunday.
Homegrown auto major Mahindra, in fact, continued to maintain its lead over rival
Tata Motors
in May, powered by demand for its range of utility vehicles. Mahindra sold 52,431 units last month, which is an increase of 21% over 43,218 units sold in May 2024. At Tata Motors, sales fell by 11% to 41,557 units in the same period.
Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO, Automotive Division, M&M, said, 'Thanks to continued demand for our products, we were able to deliver industry-leading growth across our ICE and BEV portfolio.'
Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) reported an increase of 22% to sell 29,280 units last month. Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President, Sales-Service-Used Car Business, said, in line with overall market trends, the company's MPV and SUV segments continued to be the primary growth drivers—reflecting a clear shift in customer preference towards versatile mobility options.
'With the onset of the monsoon and forecasts indicating a normal to above-normal season, we remain optimistic about improved market sentiment in the coming months, particularly across rural and semi-urban regions. This, backed by our vast product portfolio and innovative campaigns, we are well-positioned to maintain this growth trajectory', Wadhwa informed.
Kia India and JSW MG Motor saw sales grow by 14% (to 22315 units) and 40% (to 6304 units), respectively.
In the two-wheeler segment, demand remained healthy with Chennai-based
TVS Motor Company
reporting sales increase of 14% at 309,287 units in May.
Sales of commercial vehicles was subdued. Market leader Tata Motors saw sales fall 9% to 25,872 units in the month under review.
In the farm equipment sector, Mahindra sold 38,914 tractors last month, which is an increase of 10% over Veejay Nakra, President – Farm Equipment Business, Mahindra & Mahindra, said, 'Early advancement of above normal Southwest monsoon should bode well for kharif sowing. Land preparation activities are progressing well for paddy sowing. Approval of hike in MSP for Paddy and other kharif crops will bring positive sentiments among farmers. Better reservoir levels , Government announcement of record foodgrain production and introduction of various schemes will help farmers aim higher productivity going forward and in turn augur well for tractor demand.'

Google to spend $500 million revamping compliance in shareholder settlement
Google agreed to spend $500 million over 10 years to overhaul its compliance structure, to settle shareholder litigation accusing the search engine company of antitrust violations, settlement papers show. The preliminary settlement of so-called derivative litigation against officials at Google parent Alphabet, including Chief Executive Sundar Pichai and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, was filed late on Friday. It requires approval by U.S. District Judge Rita Lin in San Francisco. The changes include creating a standalone board committee to oversee risk and compliance, previously the responsibility of the Alphabet board's audit and compliance committee. Alphabet would also create a senior vice president-level committee to address regulatory and compliance issues, reporting to Pichai, and a compliance committee consisting of Google product team managers and internal compliance experts. Google denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle. 'Over the years, we have devoted substantial resources to building robust compliance processes," the Mountain View, California-based company said on Monday. "To avoid protracted litigation we're happy to make these commitments." Shareholders led by two Michigan pension funds accused Google executives and directors of breaching their fiduciary duties by exposing the company to antitrust liability related to its search, Ad Tech, Android and app distribution businesses. "These reforms, rarely achieved in shareholder derivative actions, constitute a comprehensive overhaul of Alphabet's compliance function," resulting in "deeply rooted culture change," the shareholders' lawyers said. The changes must remain in place at least four years. Shareholders would not be paid. Patrick Coughlin, a lawyer for the shareholders, in a Monday interview called the settlement one of the largest by a company to fund regulatory compliance committees. "We didn't see the board getting the fulsome reports it should have gotten regarding antitrust risks," he said. "There are things it could have done, and should have done, earlier." The settlement was disclosed the same day U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta in Washington, who last August found Google violated federal antitrust law to maintain dominance in search, completed a hearing to consider how to address the monopoly. Mehta plans to rule by August. The U.S. Department of Justice has proposed requiring Google to sell its Chrome browser and share search data with rivals. In a derivative lawsuit, shareholders sue officials on behalf of a company. The shareholders' lawyers plan to seek up to $80 million for legal fees and expenses, on top of the $500 million.

Yes Bank Shares In Focus Ahead Of Board Meeting To Discuss Fund Raise, Clarify Speculation
Last Updated: Yes Bank was the third-best performer on the Nifty 500 index on Tuesday, rallying over 8%; What investors should know Yes Bank Share Price: Shares of Yes Bank Ltd., a Mumbai-based private lender, will be in the spotlight again on Tuesday, ahead of its board meeting to consider a fundraising proposal. Yes Bank was the third-best performer on the Nifty 500 index on Tuesday, rallying over 8% following media reports that Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) is seeking approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to operate a wholly-owned subsidiary. The move was interpreted as a step toward acquiring a controlling stake in Yes Bank. However, Yes Bank quickly issued a clarification in the early hours of Tuesday, stating it was not aware of any such discussions. 'Further references to the bank having 'road map' discussions with the RBI are factually incorrect," the lender added. The board of Yes Bank is also scheduled to consider fundraising proposals, including the issuance of equity shares, debt securities, or any other instruments through permissible means such as private placement or preferential issue. Just last month, Sumitomo had announced plans to acquire a 20% stake in Yes Bank from a consortium of lenders led by the State Bank of India (SBI). This group had rescued Yes Bank in 2020 from a severe liquidity crisis. The deal values Yes Bank at slightly above $8 billion. Shares of Yes Bank ended 8% higher on Monday at Rs 23.22, with the stock surging nearly 30% in the past month. Yes Bank is a private sector bank in India that was founded in 2004 by Rana Kapoor and Ashok Kapur. It is headquartered in Mumbai and offers a wide range of banking and financial services, including corporate and retail banking, asset management, and wealth management. First Published:
