Turkish and Lebanese Companies to build new Tigris Bridge

Iraq Business2 days ago
By John Lee.
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani on Wednesday launched the construction of Al-Kriat [Al-Kari'a] Bridge over the Tigris River as part of the Baghdad reconstruction campaign, specifically targeting the revitalisation of the holy city of Kadhimiya.
The work will be carried out by Turkish company HSY Yapi Insaat and Lebanon's Khatib & Alami.
This project is the first in the development of the "Fifth Division" military zone, which has been closed for decades and will now be transformed into a 400-dunum area hosting public services, cultural and religious centres, and rest cities for pilgrims.
Al-Sudani praised the collaborative efforts of ministers, the PM's office, Baghdad Municipality, the Ministry of Housing, the Investment Commission, and the religious endowments. He confirmed the government's commitment to a realistic and strategic plan tailored to each district's needs.
The Prime Minister announced that the Fifth Division area is now open to all investors through a transparent and non-residential investment process. A key feature will be a 12,500m² museum documenting the atrocities of Iraq's former dictatorship-intended as a national reminder and deterrent against repeating such history.
Key statements by PM Al-Sudani:
Baghdad's population now exceeds 9.5 million, yet the city has lacked proportional infrastructure rehabilitation.
Kadhimiya, long neglected, is now undergoing a transformation that respects its Islamic heritage and accommodates religious visitors.
"Baghdad is More Beautiful" (phases 1 and 2), in coordination with ministry and municipal plans, represents a unified vision for comprehensive urban renewal.
Islamic architectural standards are being upheld in all planned developments.
The campaign also targets neighbourhoods, schools, and service institutions in Kadhimiya, ensuring high standards and rapid implementation.
The Al-Kriat Bridge is a strategic part of Baghdad's second-phase traffic decongestion programme, connecting to major roads such as Mohammed Al-Qasim Expressway and Army Canal.
Other initiatives in the Kadhimiya reconstruction campaign include:
Upgrading and expanding 15 major roads across five districts
Building 38 new schools and restoring 4 historic ones
Paving and resurfacing 12 residential areas
Developing public parking, overpasses, family recreation facilities
Creating six new city entrances
Upgrading sewage treatment, water supply systems, and relocating government offices outside the city

UN Envoy on displaced Yazidis: This is not a life

Shafaq News – Duhok On Friday, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq and head of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohamad Al Hassan, denounced the dire living conditions endured by the Yazidi internally displaced in Sharya camp, Duhok province. During his visit to the camp on the 11th anniversary of the ISIS attack on the Yazidi community in Sinjar, he described the situation as untenable: 'This is not a life. This is not stability. No Iraqi citizen or official can accept the continuation of this reality.' Al-Hassan appealed to relevant authorities to adopt a constructive approach toward improving conditions in displacement camps, emphasizing that the ultimate goal must be 'the dignified, voluntary, and safe return of IDPs to their homes in Sinjar district, Nineveh province.' The Yazidi community was among the hardest hit by ISIS atrocities in 2014. To this day, more than 200,000 Yazidis remain displaced, many residing in camps under inadequate living standards. Others have returned to their areas of origin, often without access to basic services or sustainable support systems. Additionally, approximately 2,600 Yazidis remain unaccounted for, years after the initial attacks.

PM: The brutal Anfal campaigns is clear evidence of the dictatorship of the former regime

Baghdad - INA Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani affirmed on Friday that the brutal Anfal campaigns represented clear evidence of the dictatorship and criminality of the former regime. In a post on the X website, followed by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), al-Sudani said: "We mark the forty-second anniversary of the brutal Anfal campaigns, which targeted the elderly, children, women, and youth from the honorable Barzani families. These campaigns resulted in the disappearance of 8,000 of them in a criminal and inhumane manner, and represented clear evidence of the dictatorship and criminality of the former regime." He added, "On this occasion, we extend to our Barzani brothers, foremost among them the President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Masoud Barzani, our most sincere expressions of solidarity and condolences for that pure blood that, along with the blood of all Iraqis, resulted in liberation from that dark era and the path to freedom and justice under our democratic system."

Linked to prison atrocities: Iraq arrests former regime officer

Shafaq News – Baghdad On Friday, Iraq's National Security Service announced the arrest of Ajaj Ahmad Hardan, known as 'Hajjaj Nagra al-Salman,' a former intelligence officer accused of grave human rights violations under Saddam Hussein's regime. The operation followed a six-month intelligence effort by security units in al-Muthanna and southern Saladin. Despite longstanding claims by his family that he was dead, investigators successfully tracked his movements and captured him in Saladin province. During the Baath era, Hardan held several senior posts, including roles in al-Rumaitha, al-Najmi, al-Hilal, al-Basiyah, and finally at Nagra al-Salman prison, where he oversaw operations. Officials say he also participated in mass executions and the burial of victims in collective graves. He is accused of torture, rape, and extrajudicial killings at the prison, particularly targeting Kurds forcibly relocated to al-Muthanna during the dictatorship.
