Dricus Dricus Du Plessis vs. Khamzat Chimaev title fight booked for UFC 319 in Chicago UFC returns to Chicago for first time since 2019
Perhaps the most anticipated UFC middleweight championship fight in recent memory will take center stage toward the end of the summer.
Dricus Du Plessis will attempt to make the third defense of his title reign when he meets undefeated Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 319 on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).
UFC CEO Dana White announced the Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) vs. Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) championship clash, along with other big summer fights, Tuesday on Instagram.
After claiming the 185-pound strap from Sean Strickland in January 2024, Du Plessis firmly has established himself as the division's top dog with successful defenses over Israel Adesanya and a rematch with Strickland.
The 31-year-old South African, who is No. 1 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie middleweight rankings and No. 5 pound-for-pound, called for a matchup with No. 2-ranked Chimaev in late 2024, but was instead booked for the rematch with Strickland at UFC 312 in February, which he won by unanimous decision.
He will now get his wish to face Chimaev, who gets his long-awaited first crack at UFC gold. The 30-year-old has had title expectations since he splashed on the UFC scene in emphatic fashion in July 2020, but the road to the top has been slowed by injuries and other health issues.
Chimaev claims to have made beneficial adjustments to his training regiment, however, and that's what led to his first-round finish of former champ Robert Whittaker at UFC 308 in October, which was named MMA Junkie's 2024 Submission of the Year.
The victory over Whittaker left no doubt that a title shot was next, and now Chimaev can become the 15th fighter in UFC history to claim an undisputed belt with an undefeated record.

Khamzat Chimaev dominates Dricus du Plessis to win UFC middleweight title

FacebookTweetLink Khamzat Chimaev finally lived up to his early promise on Saturday night, utterly dominating Dricus du Plessis to claim the UFC middleweight championship at UFC 319. Chimaev won by unanimous decision having been in complete control throughout the contest, landing a UFC-record 529 strikes on his South African opponent. Du Plessis – who was making the third defense of his belt – had no answer to Chimaev's grappling and found himself on the mat within the opening minute of the fight. He survived that time, but ended up being taken down again in each of the following rounds. Chimaev was particularly dominant in the third round, landing 156 strikes – more than three times as many as du Plessis managed in the entire fight. Despite having 21 minutes and 40 seconds of control time – the second most ever in a UFC fight behind the 22 minutes 18 seconds Sean Sherk managed against Hermes França in 2007 – Chimaev was unable to finish off his opponent. But, even with a late fightback from du Plessis, all three judges scored the fight 50 to 44 in Chimaev's favor. 'I never game-plan,' Chimaev said afterward. 'I just came in, work like I do in the gym. That guy is strong, I couldn't finish, respect that guy, he's the only champion who was saying my name. This guy has real heart, a real lion, a real African lion.' Having been touted as a future champion since his UFC debut in 2020, this victory represents the biggest win of Chimaev's career. The Chechen-born fighter is now 15-0-0 but, due to injury and illness, fought just twice in 2023 and 2024. Chimaev has also struggled to obtain a visa for the US during that time but in early August, the 31-year-old credited President Donald Trump with helping him to secure the visa which allowed him to appear on Saturday's card, his first fight on American soil in nearly three years. The last few years have seen Chimaev face criticism due to his ties to notorious Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov – the two have posed together for photos and Kadyrov attended Chimaev's wedding in 2022.

'You kidding me?': Fighters lose their minds over Lerone Murphy's KO of Aaron Pico at UFC 319

Lerone Murphy promised to show Aaron Pico isn't quite ready to get past the elite at featherweight on Saturday when he spoiled a heavily-hyped UFC 319 debut with a massive spinning elbow knockout. Murphy (17-0-1 MMA, 9-0-1 UFC) was tasked with welcoming Bellator and PFL veteran Pico (13-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) to the octagon in the co-headliner at United Center in Chicago. Just like every other time in his career, he refused to lose and emerged with a METHOD triumph to further elevate his own profile in the 145-pound title picture. Check below for the top X (formerly Twitter) reactions to Murphy beating Pico at UFC 319. Why Heat trading Haywood Highsmith creates flexibility

The post Why Heat trading Haywood Highsmith creates flexibility appeared first on ClutchPoints. In a largely surprising move that fans weren't expecting on a Friday afternoon, the Miami Heat have traded Haywood Highsmith to the Brooklyn Nets. With the Heat preparing for the 2025-26 season after a relatively disappointing last go-around, the team is in the process of finalizing the roster, and with this latest deal, there could be fans wondering what the thought process is of making the trade. For the full details of the trade, according to Shams Charania of ESPN, Miami is dealing 'Haywood Highsmith and a 2032 second-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for a protected 2026 second-round pick.' It's important to note that Highsmith suffered recently from a torn meniscus, and after a successful surgery to repair it, he was expected to be out for eight to 10 weeks and was likely to be out for training camp and maybe the start of the season. A main goal this offseason for the Heat was to get below the luxury tax, and with this trade, which gives Brooklyn Highsmith, and they didn't receive one, the move gets that done. As said by Anthony Chiang of The Miami Herald, the team was '$1.6 million above the luxury-tax line,' and now they're '$4.3 million under the luxury-tax threshold.' The transaction gives Miami flexibility in regards to being in the tax and even opens up the opportunity to use a $5.6 million trade exception, as said by ClutchPoints' Brett Seigel. 'By trading Haywood Highsmith, who is currently out indefinitely with a meniscus injury, the Heat move out of the luxury tax,' Siegel wrote on X, formerly Twitter. 'The Heat move out of the luxury tax, create a $5.6M TPE, and open a roster spot for a minimum contract.' More on the reasons the Heat traded Haywood Highsmith to the Nets One has to wonder if the trade was made after the Heat announced the significant time that Highsmith would miss after repairing a meniscus tear, which he sustained in a workout in Baltimore. Highsmith was one of Miami's undrafted success stories who had been a constant at the G-League level, becoming a mainstay in Erik Spoelstra's rotation as a defensive stalwart who could also shoot the three-pointer. The Heat would award Highsmith an $11 million contract extension last offseason after consistent play, but now he has been traded to Brooklyn. Besides the cap flexibility, the team is now down to 13 players on standard contracts, with the limit being 15. 'By dealing away Highsmith and not acquiring a player in return, the Heat's roster is down to 13 players on standard contracts for this upcoming season — two below the NBA regular-season limit of 15 players on standard deals,' Chiang wrote. 'But more importantly, the trade brings the Heat under the luxury-tax threshold. By shedding Highsmith's expiring $5.6 million salary, the Heat goes from $1.3 million above the luxury-tax line to $4.3 million under the luxury-tax threshold.' 'After finishing as a luxury tax team in each of the last two seasons,' Chiang continued, 'the Heat was determined to escape the luxury tax for this upcoming season in order to avoid the onerous repeater tax that's triggered when a team crosses the luxury tax threshold in four straight seasons or four times during a five-season period.' At any rate, the Heat is looking to improve after finishing 37-45, which put them 10th in the Eastern Conference.
