Prosecutors expected to announce felony charges in LA car crash outside nightclub that injured 36
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles prosecutors are expected to announce felony charges Tuesday in connection with a car crash outside a nightclub over the weekend that injured at least 36 people and led to the driver being shot. Partygoers were leaving the Vermont Hollywood venue at the end of a reggae hip-hop event early Saturday when a vehicle rammed into the crowd along a busy boulevard in East Hollywood. The car came to a stop after colliding with several food carts, which became lodged underneath the vehicle, and bystanders attacked the driver, according to police. Injuries ranged from minor pain to serious fractures and lacerations, and some people were briefly trapped beneath the vehicle. LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman is expected to announce felony charges against the driver, who was identified Sunday as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez. He is expected to face a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. A phone number for Ramirez could not be found in an online database search, and the public defender's office has not responded to requests for comment on whether one of its attorneys is representing him. Ramirez was later found to have been shot in the lower back, but authorities have not identified the suspected gunman. Los Angeles police released surveillance photos Monday from cameras near the crash showing a man with a goatee wearing a blue Dodgers jacket and a light blue jersey with the number '5.' Ramirez has a criminal history that includes a battery and gang-related charge in 2014, an aggravated battery conviction for a 2019 attack on a Black man at a Whole Foods grocery store in Laguna Beach, California, and a domestic violence charge in 2021, records show. Ramirez 'has proved to be violent to strangers and family alike and clearly has a lack of concern for the safety of others,' Orange County prosecutors said in a court filing for the 2019 attack. A 2024 drunken driving case and 2022 domestic violence charge were pending at the time of the nightclub crash, according to records.

Greater Manchester street mourns the loss of "local boy" following e-bike crash
Members of a community have expressed their shock following the death of a 15-year-old boy in a tragic crash involving an e-bike. Police were called to reports of the collision on Rowrah Crescent in Middleton at around 11:55am on Tuesday (July 22). Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene. His family are being supported by officers, say GMP. A 59-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and and remains in custody for questioning. Another 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of theft as part of the investigation. READ MORE: Boy, 15, dies after crash on Greater Manchester estate READ MORE: Man arrested on suspicion of murder after boy, 15, dies following e-bike crash A scene is currently in place on Rowrah Crescent where a small cordon has been placed in the middle of the street. Detectives, PCSOs and CSI officers were spotted carrying out their work on the street. Some residents stop and stare, understandably curious for any update, however, a majority of neighbours opted to stay inside. One neighbour who knew the boy and his family well said: "This involves the family of my friend. When something like this happens you just try to keep out of the way because it's a sad thing." Another resident added: "There was a big commotion, I was inside when it happened but when I came out loads of people and police were on the street. "I didn't know what happened at first, but they said a young boy has lost his life. I knew the boy, he was local to the area and very well known. It's such a sad situation." Another resident who said they knew of the teenager told the M.E.N: "He was a top, top lad. Lived on this estate all his life and a lot of people knew him. "He was very respectable, obviously it's a horrible thing to happen to him and his family." Officers are working to establish the full circumstances of the incident and are investigating allegations of a theft in the events leading up to the collision. Detective Chief Inspector Christopher Dean, from GMP's Rochdale district, said: 'This terrible incident has seen the death of a teenage boy, and we are working hard to establish the full facts of this case, in what is the very early stages of an investigation. 'A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and will be questioned in due course, while officers are already in place to support the family of the boy who has died today. "I want to remind people that at the heart of this is a grieving family, and I would ask the community to not speculate on social media while we piece together the events of earlier today. 'As our work progresses, I would ask anyone with information to please come forward – whether you witnessed anything or have any dashcam, CCTV, or doorbell footage from the area.' 17 dead in head-on collision between minibus taxi and truck in Zimbabwe, police say
JOHANNESBURG — A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a haulage truck killed 17 people in northeastern Zimbabwe on Tuesday police said. Police spokesman Paul Nyathi said all 17 victims, including some pedestrians, died at the scene of the crash, which happened near Chitungwiza, a densely populated town about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) southeast of the capital, Harare. Nyathi said the truck veered into the opposite lane and collided with the minibus after the driver lost control. Before the impact, the truck struck two pedestrians walking on the 'island of the road,' he said. Fifteen of the 17 passengers in the minibus died instantly, while others were injured and rushed to a hospital. The state-run Herald newspaper reported that the minibus was 'completely flattened, with only fragments of its chassis visible from beneath the truck's undercarriage.' Twisted metal, shattered glass and debris were strewn across the road as rescuers worked to retrieve trapped passengers, the newspaper said. The accident happened in the morning, but rescuers were still recovering bodies at noon, it reported. Chitungwiza Mayor Rosaria Mangoma urged the government to declare the crash a national disaster, calling it 'one of the most disturbing and traumatic scenes' the town had witnessed. Deadly road accidents involving public transportation are common in Zimbabwe, where speeding is widespread as drivers attempt to maximize daily trips. Poorly maintained roads add to the danger. In February, 24 people were killed in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck near Beitbridge, on the border with South Africa. Zimbabwe, with a population of about 15 million, records a road accident every 15 minutes, killing at least five people daily — one of the highest fatality rates in Africa, according to the national statistics agency.
