Dilip Rasiklal Doshi born on December 22, 1947, is a former Indian cricketer from Bengal, though his roots were in Gujarat.
Doshi was one of only four Test bowlers who debuted after the age of thirty and went on to take over 100 wickets.
In Test cricket, Doshi made his debut in Chennai against Australia in September 1979, already in his 30s. He immediately made an impact, with figures of 6/103 and 2/64 – India's best bowler in the match. He continued to perform well throughout the series, and in the final Test in Bombay (Mumbai now), he was instrumental in India's victory, wih figures of 5/43 and 3/60.
One of his most memorable performances was at Eden Gardens in Calcutta, his adopted hometown, where he took 4/92 in front of a 70,000-strong crowd.
After that series, Doshi secured his place in the Indian Test side. However, in the following years, he struggled to establish himself as a regular match-winner at the international level. His only significant match-winning effort after the Australian series came in Bombay (Mumbai now) against England in the 1981-82 series, where he took 5/39, helping India secure a crucial first innings lead in a low-scoring match. The emergence of Maninder Singh during the 1982-83 season ultimately brought an end to Doshi's Test career.
Doshi is widely regarded as one of the poorest batters in history of Test cricket, with a batting average of just 4.60. He also holds the record for the most Test innings in a career without ever batting above someone else in the order, with 38 innings batting at number 11.
Dilip Doshi ODI Record
In ODIs, Doshi made his debut during the 1980-81 tour of Australia. Against New Zealand at the Gabba, he achieved his best figures of 4/30.
Despite his impressive ODI average (23.81) and economy rate (3.96), his fielding was not very agile, and his batting was limited. Consequently, he played only 15 ODIs for India, with all-rounder Ravi Shastri being preferred for the 1983 World Cup.
Dilip Doshi Domestic Record
In first-class cricket, Doshi continued to play, though his impact was limited. He made his first-class debut with Saurashtra, but played most of his Ranji Trophy cricket with Bengal. For Bengal, he achieved remarkable figures of 6 wickets for 6 runs against Assam in 1974. His long Ranji Trophy career shows 318 wickets at an impressive average of 18.33.
Doshi also played first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire in England. His overall first-class career saw him take 898 wickets at an average of 26.58.
In March 1983, he led a West Bengal side on a short tour of Dhaka. In the three-day match, he led his team to an emphatic win with figures of 7/39 and 5/74. His spin proved too challenging for the Bangladeshi batsmen, as he also took 3/27 from nine overs in the 45-over match.

Shubman Gill admits batting collapses a major concern for India after Headingley defeat: 'Never a good sign'

India suffered a five-wicket defeat in the first Test against England at Headingley despite setting a challenging target of 371, and captain Shubman Gill admitted batting collapses, along with dropped catches and wayward bowling are areas his team will have to work on. read more Captain Shubman Gill admitted batting collapses is something India will have to work on in the build-up to the second Test against England in Birmingham after suffering a five-wicket defeat in Leeds on Tuesday. Gill, however, added that he was proud of the fight that his teammates displayed in taking the game to the last hour in the final day of the series opener at Headingley. Ben Duckett scored a sublime 149 while opening partner Zak Crawley (65) and senior batter Joe Root (53) chipped in with half-centuries as England chased down a target of 371 set by India on Day 5 of the first Test on Sunday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'I think it was a brilliant Test match': Gill This was despite five centuries being scored by four different Indian batters in the match along with a 14th Test five-for by Jasprit Bumrah (5/83) in the first innings. India found themselves in dominant positions in both innings, only to lose wickets in a heap – seven wickets for 41 runs in the first innings and six for 31 in the second. 'I think it was a brilliant Test match. We had our chances, we dropped catches and our lower-order didn't contribute enough, but proud of the team and overall a good effort. Yesterday we were thinking we were going to get around 430 and declare,' Gill said in the post-match presentation ceremony after losing his first Test as India Test captain. Also Read | 'Test cricket at its finest': Experts react as England chase down 371 against India at Headingley 'Unfortunately our last six wickets scored only around 20-25 runs which is never a good sign. Even today after their brilliant opening partnership I felt we still had our chance but just didn't go our way in this match. 'Yes, that was something that we spoke about but when you are out there in the middle it happens so quickly and I think it would be one of those things that we have to rectify in the upcoming matches Could be one of those things we have to rectify in the upcoming matches,' Gill added, when asked about India's batting collapses at Headingley. The collapses played a major part, but weren't the only factors in the defeat, with the Indians, especially Yashasvi Jaiswal, also guilty of dropping several catches and the rest of the seamers not providing Bumrah enough support from the other end. 'Yes, definitely chances don't come easy especially on wickets like these and we dropped quite a few catches but I think we've got a young team, still a learning one and hopefully in the next matches we'll be able to improve on those aspects,' the 25-year-old added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Stokes heaps praise on Duckett and Crawley England captain Ben Stokes, meanwhile, couldn't be happier on being part of another memorable triumph at Headingley, the venue where he had starred in an epic one-wicket victory over Australia during the 2019 Ashes. 'We've got some good memories here, this is another one to add to it. Awesome Test match to be a part of, going into the final hour of day 5 and getting the run-chase,' Stokes said during the post-match presentation. England opener Ben Duckett was adjudged the Player of the Match in the first Test against India at Headingley for his knocks of 62 and 149. Reuters The all-rounder had faced a barrage of criticism after opting to field on a sunny opening day at Edgbaston, especially after India ended the day on a dominant position of 359/3. Stokes, however, stood vindicated in the end with his team saving their best for the last as they chased down a challenging 371-run target with relative ease. 'You don't know what's going to happen before a ball is bowled. You have to do what you think is going to give you the best chance of winning. We were trying to look at what will give us the best opportunity to win. We saw a bit of grass and moisture on the pitch, we thought it will do a bit for us. The opposition is allowed to play well, thought they played very well in that first session.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Stokes also credited openers Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley for laying the foundation for the successful chase with a mammoth 188-run opening partnership. Duckett would follow up his knock of 62 in the first innings with a magnificent 149 in the chase to earn the Player of the Match award. 'The pressure of a fourth innings and going out there is tough, especially in England. That partnership between Zak (Crawley) and Ben (Duckett) was incredible to get us going. To get that down to set us off in a run-chase was incredible. They complement each other really well. Thought Zak stayed very calm. Duckett as well, really good. Zak's 60-odd was very important as well. 'Chasing down totals gives this team a lot of confidence. To win against quality oppositions, like we have for a number of times, it gives us confidence. Been a great start to the series, got four more hard games to come,' Stokes added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The action in the five-match series between England and India resumes on 2 July at Edgbaston, Birmingham – the venue where England had chased down a target of 378 with seven wickets to spare three summers ago.

The West Indies are set to host Australia for a highly-anticipated three-match Test series starting June 25, 2025, as part of the World Test Championship (WTC). After a disappointing loss to South Africa in the WTC final, Pat Cummins' Australian side will be geared up to bounce back. On the other hand, the Caribbean team will also want to clinch a win at their home ground. The last time these teams faced each other was in the year 2024. The series ended with a 1-1 series draw, highlighted by Shamar Joseph's remarkable 7-68 at the Gabba. Australia will face a challenge after Steve Smith was sidelined for the first Test due to a finger injury sustained in the WTC final. Moreover, Marnus Labuschagne has also been dropped for the opening match. Sam Konstas is likely to open alongside Usman Khawaja, with Josh Inglis replacing Smith. The West Indies, under new captain Roston Chase, are exploring a transitional phase. Chase, who hasn't played a Test since March 2023 took over from Kraigg Brathwaite, who stepped down earlier this year. The absence of veteran pacer Kemar Roach could impact their bowling front. However, young players like Shamar Joseph and Alzarri Joseph are expected to perform well. Neeraj Chopra wins the Golden Spike meet with his best throw of 85.29m

India's javelin ace Neeraj Chopra extended his purple patch with another podium-topping performance, clinching gold at the Golden Spike meet in Ostrava on Tuesday. Competing for the first time at this historic event, Chopra threw 85.29m to seal the title in a nine-man field. Coming off a commanding victory at the Paris Diamond League just days earlier, the Olympic gold medallist proved his consistency with a second consecutive international win. Though not at his peak, Chopra expressed satisfaction with his performance, especially given the competition's significance in the career of his coach Jan Železný, who also served as the event director. Climbs to top after slow start Chopra began the contest with a foul and a second-round effort of 83.45m, which placed him third temporarily. He then found his rhythm in the third round, launching the javelin to 85.29m — a throw that would remain unmatched for the rest of the evening. His subsequent attempts measured 82.17m and 81.01m, before ending with another foul. Competition lacks key rivals The field in Ostrava was relatively modest in Chopra's absence of top rival Julian Weber, making the Indian the frontrunner on paper. South Africa's Douw Smit finished second with a best of 84.12m, while Grenada's two-time world champion Anderson Peters secured third place with 83.63m. Germany's Rio 2016 Olympic champion Thomas Röhler could only manage 79.18m to finish seventh, continuing his recent struggles. Železný's legacy adds meaning to win Coach Železný, who famously won the Golden Spike nine times during his illustrious career, was present at the venue, lending extra motivation to Chopra. The 27-year-old Indian had missed the past two editions due to fitness concerns, but made a statement in his debut appearance at this prestigious meet. Eyes on Bengaluru next Chopra's next stop will be the NC Classic in Bengaluru on 5 July, a meet he is hosting. Peters and Röhler are also set to compete, setting the stage for another high-quality showdown in front of home fans.
