Woman says car buyer scammed her out of money meant for son's college

Yahoo08-05-2025
Katonya Douglas says she's a single mother of five and another is going to college. She planned to sell a car she didn't need and use the money for his school.
'So, it was a lot of things that I had hopes and dreams for,' she said. 'I just feel scammed.'
Action 9: Carrier says he was attacked, criticizes USPS response
She says she posted it on Facebook Marketplace.
'I had several bites … (I) wish I had taken the first one,' she said.
Instead, she went with another taker.
She told Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke they met at a DMV and that he paid her some cash.
'So, then he sends me a Zelle for [$]2,800. And I received a message from my bank that says payment received,' she said. 'I trusted that, and I gave him my car and my keys, and my title.'
She added, 'The next morning, it says 'Payment failed.''
She says he gave a few hundred dollars more, but then ghosted her.
She was still out a few grand, Stoogenke said. So, she filed a police report and is trying to raise the money for her son's tuition.
'I am typically a very smart person. I think I'm just a little trusting. A little bit too trusting and everything is easy to scam nowadays,' she said.
Action 9 messaged the buyer on Facebook but didn't hear back in time for this report.
Stoogenke said, 'So, let's talk about both Facebook Marketplace and Zelle.
Facebook Marketplace: Douglas did a lot of things right. She met in person at a safe location and tried to be cautious before handing over what she was selling.
Zelle: Usually, when you transfer money, it's a done deal. In fact, a lot of scam victims have found that out the hard way when they get tricked into sending money. But the company behind Zelle says, if you're the one receiving the money through the app, always check your bank account to make sure the money is there before moving on.

Travis Decker Manhunt: Police Share New Evidence in Daughters' Murders

Originally appeared on E! Online Authorities are sharing more information surrounding Travis Decker's case. Over two months after the bodies of his and ex-wife Whitney Decker's daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were discovered at a campground in Leavenworth, Wash., police have linked the patriarch's DNA to the plastic bags used to kill the girls, whose causes of death were determined to be suffocation, per the autopsies completed by the Medical Examiner. 'Two of the victims each had two separate bags over their heads and the third victim had three separate bags over their head,' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 19 press release shared to Facebook. 'In addition, several cable ties were located on the ground in the immediate area of the bodies. These plastic bags and cable ties were collected that night by the Washington State Patrol Crime Response Team.' After sending this evidence for DNA analysis, authorities said that they believe Travis—who is wanted on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping—is the 'only suspect involved in committing these homicides.' Store ram raid sparks police appeal

Police are appealing for information after a ram raid on a village store in Surrey. Officers said a stolen blue Land Rover Discovery was used in the raid on a Spar shop in Elstead at 01:55 BST on 14 August. Surrey Police described the suspects as three men in dark clothing, wearing hats, gloves and balaclavas. The car then made off in the direction of The Mill pub. The force said the three suspects were linked to "some suspicious activity" on School Road in Rowledge an hour before the incident. They were believed to be scoping out vehicles parked on driveways, it continued. Surrey Police urged anyone with footage or who saw what happened to get in contact. ‘Beloved' 18-year-old shot dead at house party, NM officials say. Man sentenced

A man has been sentenced to prison in connection to the 2022 shooting that left a 'beloved' 18-year-old dead, New Mexico officials said. In December 2022, now-21-year-old Jesse Parra showed up uninvited to an Albuquerque house party with Cruz Medina, Isaiah Espinosa and Jesse Barrios after learning about it on social media, according to an Aug. 19 Facebook post by the Bernalillo County District Attorney's Office. After they were asked to leave because they were taking photos with guns, they returned and began shooting, officials said. Parra drove the car during the shooting, 'maneuvering the vehicle so the two shooters could fire at the home and flee the scene,' officials said. An 18-year-old, later identified as Jada Gonzales, was fatally shot in the stomach, officials said. Gonzales had plans to attend Texas Christian University and was an 'exemplary student' who worked two jobs, a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses said. 'This is the greatest pain I've ever known and not one I'd wish any parent to ever feel,' the GoFundMe page said. Medina, then 16, was sentenced to 24 years in prison, officials said. Espinosa, 16 at the time and the one accused of firing the shot that killed Gonzales, was sentenced to 29 years in prison, prosecutors said. Barrios, then 18, 'recorded the crime on his phone and was taken into ICE custody,' prosecutors said. In April, Parra pleaded guilty to charges of shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death, conspiracy to commit shooting at a dwelling or occupied building resulting in death and tampering with evidence, officials said. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison, officials said. 'Jada Brooke Gonzales touched many lives and hearts and we are all devastated by this loss,' the GoFundMe page said.
