National Lok Adalat '25: 219 cases settled in Nagaland

: The second quarterly National Lok Adalat (NLA) 2025, conducted across Nagaland by District Legal Services Authorities under the aegis of Nagaland State Legal Services Authority, disposed of 219 cases with a settlement amount of Rs 2,38,99,111.
Out of 219 cases , 192 were at pre-litigation stage and 27 cases were at the pending stage. The cases included mostly bank loan recovery, telephone bill, Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal and other consumer and civil cases, a release detailing the district-wise settlement of cases and settlement amount said on Monday.The second quarterly NLA 2025 was conducted across the districts in the state on May 10. , which is aimed at reducing court backlog, providing access to justice for marginalised communities, and ensuring that disputes are resolved in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Agra: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath's adviser Awanish Kumar Awasthi on Friday, chaired a meeting at the tourist facilitation centre in Vrindavan, to discuss issues related to the proposed Banke Bihari Corridor with members of the Goswami community involved in the management of the temple, local shopkeepers and residents. Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Awasthi said the proposed project aims to enhance facilities for pilgrims, and efficiently manage the increasing pilgrim footfall in the Mathura-Vrindavan area. "The number of pilgrims visiting the area is rising exponentially. Today's meeting focused on how to effectively cater to this surge while ensuring public confidence and participation in the planning process. On concerns raised by the Goswami community regarding the project, Awasthi said several suggestions had been put forth during the meeting. "The district magistrate and other officials will carefully evaluate these inputs. 2 convicted to 5 years in 68cr bank fraud case
Mumbai: A magistrate's court on Thursday convicted and sentenced two men, Raza Naqvi (38) and Varun Rana (41), to five years of rigorous imprisonment for their involvement in a sophisticated financial fraud amounting to Rs 68.22 crore against Shinhan Bank in 2020. Naqvi and Rana were found guilty of flouting norms by sending Rs 68 crore in two months to companies in the US and Singapore. The fraudulent scheme involved crediting significant amounts into accounts in Mumbai (M/s ID Technologies Private Limited) and Delhi (M/s Liqus Tradex Private Limited). Instructions were then given to immediately remit equivalent sums in foreign currency, primarily to Singapore and the US. The fraud, which took place between Sept and Dec 2020, came to light after Shinhan Bank's New Delhi branch received a notice from the Cyber Cell, Odisha Police, regarding suspicious activities in M/s Liqus Tradex Pvt Ltd's account. This prompted an internal inquiry by the bank's Compliance Department, which uncovered high-volume, high-value domestic transactions inconsistent with the account holder's profile. Ltd (New Delhi) and M/s ID Technologies Pvt Ltd (Mumbai) were identical, despite bearing different names. While another accused, Sumit Verma, was acquitted, two others, Anuj Kumar Chand and Sunita Devi, remain absconding. Public prosecutor Pravina Patil argued that it is a white-collar crime and had a significant effect on society. In a 60-page judgment, the magistrate stated that evidence from prosecution witnesses established that Raza Naqvi appeared before Shinhan Bank officials and participated in the account opening process of M/s ID Technologies Pvt Ltd by falsely identifying himself as Santosh Kumar. "Subsequently, this account was used to carry out large-scale foreign remittances amounting to Rs 68 crore, based on documents and representation believed to be genuine by bank officials. ..," additional chief judicial magistrate RD Chavan said. The magistrate said that prosecution evidence proved that accused Varun Rana posed as Jogendrasingh and represented himself as a director of M/s ID Technologies Pvt Ltd to Shinhan Bank. Civic body thirsts for 1cr switch to alkaline water in glass bottles

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials and councillors apparently want to ditch the plain old purified bottled water the corporation currently manufactures at its Kotarpur plant, and upgrade to alkaline water in glass bottles. This has been made evident from AMC water production department's May 29 tender for the upgrade and modification of the 3,000 LPH (litres per hour) packaged drinking water plant in Kotarpur, setting up a 1,200 BPH glass bottle water packaging plant and its operation and maintenance (production, storage, sale, distribution, logistics) for three years. The tender is for Rs 1 crore. There are also plans to market this alkaline water under AMC's existing drinking water brand, Jal. Sources in AMC said that a decade ago, officials, dignitaries and councillors at events such as inaugurations, seminars and meetings were served bottled water sourced externally, which cost the corporation Rs 40-50 lakh annually. To save this cost, AMC set up the plastic bottling plant in Kotarpur, and even launched the Jal brand. This plan to save citizens' money failed to work as intended. Other private brands still are roped in to supply drinking water, sometimes in glass bottles due to reasons including protocols on serving VVIPs. This costs the civic body Rs 20 to 25 lakh annually. Sources add that officials and councillors themselves are avoiding AMC's water brand, leading to 200 ml bottles being discontinued. On April 30 this year, a proposal to spend approximately Rs 1.50 crore annually on tea, snacks, meals and drinking water at govt events in the city was put up for approval. The proposal to award a rate contract for Rs 1 crore annually for tea, snacks, and meal packets at various AMC events was approved, while a proposal to spend Rs 50 lakh annually on bottled water was rejected, with instructions to retender. Now, AMC is processing the tender, rendering the current bottling plant ineffective. Caught in its own 'Jal jaal' Sources in AMC's health department said that a decade ago, as serving bottled water at events cost the civic body Rs 40 to 50 lakh a year, the then municipal commissioner, D Thara, approved a plan to set up a bottling plant for Rs 1.25 crore in Kotarpur. The plant, ready by 2014, remained non-operational for two years and in 2016, was activated under the brand name 'Jal', producing 200 ml, 500 ml, and 1,000 ml water bottles. These were sold at Amul parlours outside AMC gardens and served at corporation events. In 2019, when the central govt began implementing a phased ban on single-use plastics, the then civic chief, Vijay Nehra banned the 200 ml bottles of 'Jal'. After the responsibility for water arrangements at all AMC events was handed over to its health department, it went back to serving 200ml bottles, procured from private companies, defeating all environmental and cost-saving purposes, the sources said.
