Thailand plans F1 race bid by 2028

BANGKOK : Thailand plans on bidding to host a Formula One race by 2028, the government said Monday, after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra held her latest talks with motorsport bosses at the Monaco Grand Prix.
A bid and feasibility proposal will be submitted to the Thai cabinet for approval on Wednesday next week, government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said in a statement.
Plans for a Thai grand prix, most likely run as a street race in the capital Bangkok, have been under serious discussion for more than a year.
The Thai government has touted the idea of a 'sustainable' race and Jirayu said the grand prix could benefit the kingdom to the tune of US$600 million.
Paetongtarn has held multiple meetings with F1 chief Stefano Domenicali as she seeks to push the project forward, including at the weekend in Monte Carlo, home to the sport's most storied street race.
Most of Formula One's 24-race schedule is confirmed for several years but gaps are set to open up and Domenicali has suggested that Thailand could be a contender to join the circuit.
Last month, British-Thai driver Alex Albon of Williams said the kingdom was taking the idea 'very seriously' and had come up with strong plans.
Formula One currently stages one race in Southeast Asia, in Singapore, which is regarded as the toughest race of the season because of the intense heat and humidity.

Grab gears up to enter Singapore's motor insurance game
SINGAPORE. June 2 — GrabInsure, the insurance arm of the ride-hailing giant Grab, is preparing to roll out its own motor insurance offerings in Singapore, The Straits Times (ST) reported today. According to ST, the company took a key step in May by joining the General Insurance Association (GIA), having secured a general insurance licence from the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) late last year. Since then, Grab has quietly been building up a motor insurance team, with recent job listings and recruitment activity pointing to an imminent market debut. A job advertisement reviewed by ST showed GrabInsure is seeking a lead in motor claims to drive its claims strategy, profitability and systems development. The role, based at the firm's one-north campus, will work with its Operational Product Technology team to build a motor claims system from scratch. Grab is also reportedly working with headhunters to hire actuaries and underwriters, with interviews already under way. When approached, a Grab spokesman confirmed that the company is 'in the early stages of exploring motor insurance products, alongside other propositions'. She added that the offerings are being developed to meet the needs of its driver-partners, and that the company 'will share further updates as plans develop'. Grab's entry into the motor insurance sector comes as no surprise to some in the industry, given its existing foothold in the insurance space. The company launched its first consumer insurance product in 2020 through a partnership with Chubb, offering travel insurance via its app. It has since added personal accident coverage, also underwritten by Chubb. Industry observers told ST the next step into motor insurance is a strategic one. 'The ability to have mass outreach via the Grab app to hundreds of thousands of consumers simultaneously trumps any marketing and distribution channels available to incumbents like Income,' said one veteran insider, who declined to be named. 'Grab will not need to spend on commissions or marketing — known as 'acquisition costs' — giving it a major cost advantage.' According to data from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), Singapore had 90,383 private-hire cars at the end of 2024 — a potential captive market for GrabInsure's offerings. Income Insurance currently leads the motor insurance segment with S$92.3 million (RM304.6 million) in gross written premiums in Q1 2025, capturing a 25 per cent market share.

Oscar Piastri Wins Spanish GP, Extends Formula One Lead
FORMULA ONE championship leader Oscar Piastri said winning Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix was just what he needed after losing out to McLaren teammate Lando Norris over the previous two weekends. 'It's been a great year and this weekend's been exactly the kind of weekend I was looking for,' said the Australian after his fifth win in nine races. 'We executed everything we needed to when it counted and that's all you can ask for. The team gave me a great car once again. It's a lot of fun winning races at the moment.' The victory, the seventh of the 24-year-old's career, stretched Piastri's lead over second-placed Norris to 10 points after the Briton reduced it to three with his triumph in Monaco last Sunday. Norris also finished second at Imola, the race before Monaco won by Red Bull's Max Verstappen, with Piastri third. The Australian led from pole position in Spain, the top slot on the grid secured by the biggest margin of the year so far, after also topping the practice times at the Circuit de Catalunya. 'It's definitely up there,' Piastri said when asked whether it was his strongest yet in Formula One. 'I don't know if it's the best one, but certainly it's been a strong one. You know, it's pretty hard to complain with the results we've had this weekend. 'Just the effort that's gone in, and analysing some of the things from last week that we could have done better - I think we turned it around very nicely and got back to the form we wanted to be on.' Norris, winner of two races this year so far, said he did not feel he had lost anything. 'I think Oscar drove a very good race today and had a good day yesterday. I had the pace to go with him but not enough to try and catch up and put him under threat,' he said.
