From top judges and AG to a Paralympic hero: Who was honoured on Sultan Ibrahim's birthday
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar topped the list of 104 recipients of the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours in conjunction with the official birthday of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, held at Istana Negara today.
His Majesty bestowed the Darjah Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN) award upon Mohd Dusuki, 58. The award carries the 'Tan Sri' title.
Other recipients included Chief of Defence Force General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Chief Judge of Malaya Tan Sri Hasnah Mohammed Hashim, Navy Chief Tan Sri Zulhelmy Ithnain, and Deputy Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay.
Prime Minister's Department Senior Deputy Secretary-General Datuk Abd Shukor Mahmood and the Attorney General's Chambers Legal Division head Datuk Donald Joseph Franklin were among five individuals awarded the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN), which carries the 'Datuk' title.
Other PJN recipients were Public Service Deputy Director-General (Development) Datuk Dr Mohd Bakhari Ismail, Treasury Deputy Secretary-General (Management) Datuk Ramzi Mansor, and cardiothoracic surgeon at Sultanah Aminah Hospital, Datuk Dr Simon Jerome Vendargon.
The Johan Mangku Negara (JMN) award was conferred upon the Education Service Commission secretary Md Radzi Hashim, the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) director-general Abdul Shukur Abdullah, and the Digital Ministry's Deputy Secretary-General (Digital Development) Ma. Sivanesan Marimuthu @ Muthiah.
Other JMN recipients included Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Export Acceleration) of the Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) Abu Bakar Yusof, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs) at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Prof Dr Mohd Sazili Shahibi, and Head of Equity Department, Investment Division at the Employees Provident Fund (EPF), Lim Tze Seong.
Four individuals received the Johan Setia Mahkota (JSM) award, namely Deputy Director-General (Development) of the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) Chek Zainuddin Chek Jusoh, Secretary of the Technology Transfer and Commercialisation (R&D) Division at the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry Boniface Edwin Manung, Deputy Director-General (Business) of the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff, and Secretary of the Strategic Planning Division at the Higher Education Ministry Fazidah Mustafa.
Meanwhile, Malaysia's Ambassador to China, Datuk Norman Muhamad, Malaysia's Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin, and Dewan Rakyat Secretary Dr Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin received the Darjah Johan Setia Diraja (JSD) honours.
National Paralympic badminton athlete and Malaysia's first gold medallist at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Cheah Liek Hou, was among 14 recipients accorded the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) award.
The Bintang Kesatria Setia Diraja (KSD) was awarded to the Principal Assistant Secretary of the Management Unit, Ceremonial and International Conference Secretariat Division, Syed Zaqwanariff Zainudin, and Chief Security Officer of the Security Division at Istana Negara, ASP Mohd Fairouz Hamdi Mohd Yamin.
Sixteen individuals were conferred the Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) medal, including Tan Lee Bee, the sign language interpreter at the Federal Court of Malaysia. Additionally, 45 individuals received the Pingat Pangkuan Negara (PPN) medal, and the Pingat Bentara Setia Diraja (BSD) was awarded to three people.
The sole recipient of Bintang Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) was Royal Malaysian Navy personnel Lieutenant Commander Mohd Firdaus Arbaain, who rescued four victims, including two children, from drowning in an incident involving a tourist boat at Teluk Batik, Perak, in August 2023.
In conjunction with Sultan Ibrahim's official birthday, 116 individuals were conferred the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours this year. — Bernama

(File pic) KUALA LUMPUR : An activist has hit out at Pakatan Harapan leaders and MPs over their purported silence on the death of Teoh Beng Hock, 15 years after the young political aide's death in custody. At a gathering of Teoh's family and civil society groups tonight, A Jayanath of Saya Anak Bangsa Malaysia issued a blunt message to politicians who once stood with the family as they sought justice. 'During a protest for Teoh in 2009, many politicians from the opposition were then present. But tonight I don't see any of them. 'This is something all of us need to understand – politicians will make use of any issue (for their own benefit),' he said at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall here, where the participants gathered to remember Teoh and demand accountability. Jayanath challenged those who once pledged support for Teoh to reflect on their role now that they are in government. He added that many of them had pledged to introduce institutional reforms once in power and ensure justice is served for Teoh. 'I am only making a very short speech — one call to these politicians. Tomorrow morning, can you please look at yourself in the mirror and ask what you are going to do about this? 'We have not seen (your efforts), and we are giving you one last chance to (ensure justice for Teoh).' Jayanath also called on those attending the gathering to take action by writing to their respective MPs and assemblymen to urge them to raise Teoh's case in Parliament or the state assemblies. Last week, the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement urged all DAP ministers to resign in protest of the Attorney-General's Chambers' decision to classify the investigation into Teoh's case as requiring no further action, or NFA. The group said the ministers should also take responsibility on behalf of DAP for failing to fulfil the party's past promises involving Teoh. None of the DAP ministers have responded to the call yet. Teoh's sister, Lee Lan, also did not hold back in her remarks at the gathering, delivering a strong and emotional message to government leaders. 'Back then, all PH leaders told Malaysia that Teoh was murdered and that when they attain power, they will act on the case. 'But why was the investigation classified as NFA? This is a slap in the face for all PH supporters.' She also reminded Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim that he had promised to ensure justice for Teoh once appointed to the top post. Last month, Teoh's family was informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as NFA. Teoh was found dead on July 16, 2009 on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that Teoh's death was caused by 'one or more persons unknown', including MACC officers. While the police's latest investigation was classified as NFA, several quarters have questioned why the probe was launched under Section 342 of the Penal Code, which is for wrongful confinement.

MACC details RM143m assets seized in relation to sukuk fund misuse
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has detailed the assets seized during its investigation into the misappropriation of sukuk funds linked to a highway construction project in the Klang Valley involving a prominent individual holding the title Tan Sri. The funds were believed to have been misused by a highway concessionaire holder bearing the title 'Tan Sri', following operations carried out since last week. MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said the seizures included RM4.5 million from 14 individual accounts and RM33 million from eight company accounts, as well as a luxury condominium and a plot of land worth RM24.5 million. "The commission also seized nine vehicles worth RM7.65 million, although 13 more have yet to be handed over to the investigating team. "The seizures also comprised luxury watches worth approximately RM25 million, handbags worth RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds valued at RM6 million, four horses worth RM400,000, alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million, foreign assets estimated to exceed RM15 million, and gambling activities believed to involve around RM20 million," he said. Azam said preliminary investigations revealed that the misappropriation occurred between 2016 and 2020, involving RM1.35 billion in sukuk funds. "False claims totalling around RM360 million and RM416 million were made, in addition to another RM50 million from other bank loan facilities. "The RM1.67 billion highway project also failed to be completed within the stipulated period. Investigations are now focusing on alleged bribery involving RM12 million paid to certain parties in exchange for assisting with fund outflows, which were later returned to the suspect," he said. Azam said the misappropriated funds are believed to have been laundered. He also said that professionals such as auditors, financial experts, engineers, and several companies were allegedly engaged in the scheme to layer and conceal the illicit flow of funds. "As of now, the MACC has not yet recorded a statement from the Tan Sri, as he is currently warded at a private hospital. Today, investigators will obtain confirmation from doctors regarding his health status before proceeding with the statement recording. "In the meantime, the total number of witness statements remains at 45, with several witnesses who had previously given their statements recalled for further questioning," he said. Azam also said the investigation team is tracking down the Tan Sri's luxury vehicles and properties located both locally and abroad, including in London and Switzerland. He added investigators are now focusing on determining the actual value of luxury alcoholic beverages in the Tan Sri's possession, amid suspicions that funds may have been transferred to other accounts. At the same time, a notice for declaration of assets has also been issued to the Tan Sri and related parties.

Bursa ends lower amid US tariff concerns
KUALA LUMPUR : Bursa Malaysia erased early gains to close lower for the sixth consecutive day today, weighed down by selling pressure in regional emerging markets due to concerns over the ongoing US tariff conflict, said an analyst. Rakuten Trade Sdn Bhd equity research vice-president Thong Pak Leng said key regional indices closed mixed amid uncertainties surrounding US president Donald Trump's tariff war, prompting cautious investor behaviour. European equities slipped at the open due to weak sentiment and in anticipation of upcoming eurozone inflation figures. In contrast, markets in China and Hong Kong rallied on hopes of renewed US-China trade talks. On the domestic front, market sentiment remains subdued as investors adopt a wait-and-see stance amid ongoing foreign selling and escalating global trade uncertainties involving the US. The benchmark index is currently near its psychological 1,500 support level. 'Despite these challenges, we view this as an opportunity to pick up blue-chip stocks at lower prices due to their strong fundamentals, attractive valuations, and appealing dividend yields. 'As such, we anticipate the FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI (FBM KLCI) to trend within the 1,490-1,520 range for the week,' Thong told Bernama. Meanwhile, UOB Kay Hian Wealth Advisors Sdn Bhd head of investment research Sedek Jantan said market caution has intensified amid growing fears of a tariff-driven global slowdown and weakening external demand. Although the US has extended a pause on tariffs for certain Chinese goods until Aug 31, tensions have flared after Beijing rejected US accusations of breaching the existing tariff truce, instead blaming Washington for backtracking. 'A potential call between Trump and Chinese president Xi Jinping this week may offer much-needed clarity on the future direction of trade relations,' he said. Locally, Malaysia's manufacturing purchasing managers' index edged up to 48.8 in May from April, but remained below the 50-point threshold, signalling continued contraction. 'Weak new orders and declining output reflect persistent demand weakness. 'As a trade-reliant economy, Malaysia remains vulnerable to global trade disruptions, with export-oriented sectors, particularly industrial products, technology, and small-cap stocks, most exposed to downside risks,' Sedek added. At 5pm, the FBM KLCI eased 5.10 points, or 0.33%, to 1,503.25 from last Friday's close of 1,508.35. The benchmark index opened 4.37 points higher at 1,512.72 and moved between 1,497.42 and 1,514.12 throughout the trading session. Market breadth was negative with decliners thumping gainers 705 to 297, while 423 counters were unchanged, 921 untraded and 15 suspended. Turnover fell to 3.04 billion units valued at RM2.20 billion compared with last Friday's 3.21 billion units worth RM5.04 billion. Bursa Malaysia was closed yesterday in conjunction with the official birthday of Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim. Among the heavyweights, Petronas Chemicals dipped 14 sen to RM3.28, QL Resources fell 10 sen to RM4.40, IHH Healthcare eased 15 sen to RM6.75, Press Metal dropped nine sen to RM4.95, and Hong Leong Financial Group lost 28 sen to RM16.30. Among active stocks, Permaju Industries eased 0.5 sen to one sen, ACE Market debutant ICT Zone Asia, Tanco, and Harvest Miracle Capital were flat each at 20 sen, RM1 and 18 sen respectively, and MyEG slipped three sen to 89 sen. On the index board, the FBM Emas Index trimmed 45.35 points to 11,254.45, the FBMT 100 Index lost 38.28 points to 11,022.72, and the FBM ACE Index sank 69.22 points to 4,481.81. The FBM Emas Shariah Index decreased 46.10 points to 11,210.15, while the FBM 70 Index retreated 59.35 points to 16,142.16. The ACE Market volume advanced to 323.10 million shares worth RM94.99 million versus 318.43 million shares worth RM107.68 million on Friday.
