Attorney-General tops King's birthday honours list

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Attorney-General Dusuki Mokhtar topped the list of 104 recipients of the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours in conjunction with the official birthday of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim today. Dusuki, 58, was conferred the Panglima Mangku Negara (PMN) award, which carries the title 'Tan Sri', at a ceremony held at Istana Negara. Also receiving the PMN was armed forces chief Nizam Jaffar. The Panglima Setia Mahkota (PSM), which also carries the 'Tan Sri' title, was awarded to Chief Judge of Malaya Hasnah Hashim, navy chief Zulhelmy Ithnain, and deputy inspector-general of police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay. Five individuals received the Panglima Jasa Negara (PJN) award, which carries the title 'Datuk'. Among them were the Prime Minister's Department senior deputy secretary-general Abd Shukor Mahmood and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) legal division head Donald Joseph Franklin. The other three were public service deputy director-general (development) Bakhari Ismail, Treasury deputy secretary-general (management) Ramzi Mansor, and Sultanah Aminah Hospital (Johor Bahru) cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Simon Jerome Vendargon. Recipients of the Johan Mangku Negara (JMN) award include Education Service Commission secretary Radzi Hashim, National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) director-general Abdul Shukur Abdullah, and digital ministry deputy secretary-general (digital development) Ma Sivanesan Marimuthu. Also honoured were Matrade deputy CEO (export acceleration) Abu Bakar Yusof, UiTM deputy vice-chancellor Sazili Shahibi, and EPF equity department head Lim Tze Seong. Four individuals were awarded the Johan Setia Mahkota (JSM) title, including senior officials from UKAS, the science and higher education ministries, and the Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA). Malaysia's ambassadors to China and Indonesia, Norman Muhamad and Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin, as well as Dewan Rakyat secretary Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin, received the Johan Setia Diraja (JSD) honours. Paralympic badminton champion Cheah Liek Hou, who delivered Malaysia's first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Games, was among 14 recipients of the Kesatria Mangku Negara (KMN) award. The Bintang Kesatria Setia Diraja (KSD) was awarded to Istana Negara's chief security officer Fairouz Hamdi Yamin and the ceremonial division's principal assistant secretary Syed Zaqwanariff Zainudin. Sixteen others received the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN), including Federal Court sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee, while 45 were awarded the Pingat Pangkuan Negara (PPN), and three received the Pingat Bentara Setia Diraja (BSD). The only recipient of the Bintang Jasa Perkasa Persekutuan (JPP) was Royal Malaysian Navy lieutenant commander Firdaus Arbaain, who rescued four people, including two children, from drowning in a Teluk Batik boat incident last August.

Four individuals received the Johan Setia Mahkota (JSM) award, namely Deputy Director-General (Development) of the Public-Private Partnership Unit (UKAS) Chek Zainuddin Chek Jusoh, Secretary of the Technology Transfer and Commercialisation (R&D) Division at the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry Boniface Edwin Manung, Deputy Director-General (Business) of the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) Mohd Hadzmir Yusoff, and Secretary of the Strategic Planning Division at the Higher Education Ministry Fazidah Mustafa. Meanwhile, Malaysia's Ambassador to China, Datuk Norman Muhamad, Malaysia's Ambassador to Indonesia, Datuk Syed Md Hasrin Tengku Hussin, and Dewan Rakyat Secretary Dr Nizam Mydin Bacha Mydin received the Darjah Johan Setia Diraja (JSD) honours. Additionally, 45 individuals received the Pingat Pangkuan Negara (PPN) medal, and the Pingat Bentara Setia Diraja (BSD) was awarded to three people. Sultan Ibrahim awards 2025 federal honours on official birthday at Istana Negara
KUALA LUMPUR, June 2 — His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today attended the Investiture ceremony at Istana Negara to present the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours that were conferred in conjunction with his official birthday. It is the second investiture ceremony by His Majesty after being installed as the 17th King of Malaysia on July 20 last year. On arrival, His Majesty, accompanied by Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, was greeted by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Their Majesties were then escorted to the Royal Dais to receive the Royal Salute by the Guard of Honour mounted by members of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (RAMD), led by Major Khairul Fakhzan Zainol Abidin and comprising three officers and 103 other ranks, at Dataran Istana Negara. At the same time, the national anthem, Negaraku, was played by the RAMD Central Band and the Personal Flag of His Majesty was hoisted followed by a 21-gun salute carried out by the 41st Battery of the Royal Artillery Regiment. His Majesty then inspected the Guard of Honor and upon completion of the inspection, His Majesty once again received the Royal Salute before the national anthem, Negaraku, was played. Their Majesties were then escorted by Anwar and his wife to the Balairung Seri for the investiture ceremony. A total of 116 recipients received the 2025 federal awards, medals and honours that were conferred in conjunction with His Majesty's official birthday. — Bernama

Trump admin launches far-reaching audit of energy awards
The Trump administration on Thursday announced a wide-ranging review of more than $15 billion in federal awards approved under President Joe Biden. Energy Secretary Chris Wright in a memo to staff called for ramping up oversight of at least 179 awards and said decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis about whether the awards meet the administration's standards. While Wright has told lawmakers that the agency is already reviewing funding under the Inflation Reduction Act and bipartisan infrastructure law, the memo that the agency released Thursday sets the stage for DOE to pull back funding for scores of projects if recipients don't respond quickly or sufficiently enough, and to possibly expand the scope of the audit. Advertisement 'Over the past 110 days, the Energy Department has been hard at work reviewing the billions of dollars that were rushed out the door, particularly in the final days of the Biden administration, and what we have found is concerning,' Wright said in a statement. 'With this process, the Department will ensure we are doing our due diligence, utilizing taxpayer dollars to generate the largest possible benefit to the American people and safeguarding our national security.' DOE didn't immediately respond when asked what types of projects would be affected by the memo. According to a copy of the memo released by DOE, Wright said the agency will prioritize 'large-scale commercial projects that require more detailed information from the awardees for the initial phase of this review, but this process may extend to other DOE program offices as the reviews progress.' Trump in recent weeks has called for steep budget cuts at DOE, blasted what he says is the 'Green New Scam,' and offered to truncate environmental reviews for projects tied to mining, oil and gas — but not wind and solar. At DOE, audits will use previously submitted data from award recipients, DOE's own investigation or analysis, or the agency may ask recipients for more information about the project's financial health, technological and engineering viability, market conditions, compliance with award terms and conditions, and compliance with legal requirements, including those related to national security. 'If it is determined that a project meets Standards, then those projects will proceed,' Wright wrote in the memo. 'If it is determined that projects do not meet Standards, DOE may modify the project or, DOE in its discretion, may terminate the project based on the outcome of DOE's evaluation, as allowed by law,' he continued. 'Further, if a recipient of financial assistance fails to respond to information requests within the provided time frame, does not respond to follow-up questions in a timely manner, or offers incomplete responses that do not reasonably facilitate DOE's review, DOE may treat as the recipient's refusal to cooperate as grounds for termination of the award or the withholding of funding,' Wright wrote. Wright, during a hearing on Capitol Hill last week, vowed to move forward with at least some clean energy projects, following a vetting process that he said could be wrapped up this summer. 'We are reviewing existing projects; we've canceled zero so far,' Wright said at the time. He also said there isn't a desire to 'shrink or stop any of the critical research' in the DOE's national lab network. Reporter Christa Marshall contributed.
