Novak Djokovic rubbishes criticism of Carlos Alcaraz: ‘At 21, he has won four Grand Slams, what more do you want?'

An inconsistent run over the last nine months with a few unexpected losses has led to some pressure on Carlos Alcaraz, the 21-year-old World No. 2 from Spain whose achievements have raised sky high expectations as the younger generation look set to take over men's tennis from the older lot. However, 24-time Major winner Novak Djokovic, leader and last man standing of the previous generation, feels any criticism directed towards his younger rival is entirely unfair, given everything he has already achieved by his age.
'No, I don't understand it (the criticism Alcaraz has faced),' Djokovic was quoted as saying by Eurosport Spain ahead of the Madrid Masters. 'But the atmosphere and tradition of tennis in this country is very high. The expectation is enormous after Nadal, (Carlos) Moya, (Juan Carlos) Ferrero… they've all been world No. 1. But, listen. He's 21 years old, he's won four Grand Slams and many tournaments. What more do you want? You want more, but what he's done in this period is incredible.' Alcaraz has hit some good form recently, winning the Monte Carlos Masters and reaching the final in Barcelona where he was beaten by Holger Rune.

Djokovic has arrived in Madrid chasing form for a potential 25th Major at Roland Garros. He's also on the hunt for a 100th career title. But after an indifferent few years on tour, he was asked if his motivation has fallen after seeing his rivals retire — one of them, Andy Murray has even joined up with him as his coach. The Serb said the fire still burns to make more history.
'Maybe so,' he said when asked if his motivation has reduced after seeing Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal retire. 'But if I'm not motivated, I'm not here. I don't play anymore. I put the racquet to rest. I still feel the desire to play, the passion to compete is always there. I hope to push harder. The Grand Slams are tournaments where I have more motivation to do well,' the 37-year-old added.

‘It's a 1-1 tie. Murray might be a little busy, but I'll set up a decider round again' – Carlos Alcaraz on golf with Andy Murray

Carlos Alcaraz is providing plenty of entertainment at the Wimbledon, even beyond his core job of going about defending his title. When asked who had won the round of golf ahead of the start of Wimbledon as he took on retired former champ Andy Murray, Alcaraz first asked the court interviewer Ms Annabel, 'He said to you to ask me this question, right?' to loud guffaws from the crowd after his latest win. (I know, I know, OK I know he did,' he said shaking his head. 'Because he played me that day. And he beat me at golf that day,' Alcaraz would carry on. But then few days later we played again. And I beat him. So it was 1-1. We're tie. We're tie,' he said as the crowd broke into applause. When asked if there were further plans to play against Murray, Alcaraz answered, 'Let's see, I love playing golf on my days off. So, I know he has a busy schedule. I guess but I will try to set it up. A golf round again. Nine holes. To see who wins. We are tied 1-1 so I have to play again.' According to the Royal Spanish Golf Federation's Handicap Service, Carlos Alcaraz has a handicap of 11.2. Murray, the Scot has a playing partner In cricket legend James Anderson, who has a 1.8 handicap, according to the Independent and was 'already down to a respectable 7.0' on 2024 September, 17. We played the deciding match this afternoon. Maybe ask him what happened after the next match 😉 — Andy Murray (@andy_murray) July 5, 2025 The presenter would tell Alcaraz, 'I think you might be a bit busy as well.' Alcaraz next plays Rublev, who is looking to line up for his 11th quarterfinal. Andy Murray would chime in on Twitter, saying, 'We played the deciding match this afternoon. Maybe ask him what happened after next match. Alcaraz had just wrapped up the third round playing against big serving Jan-Lennard Struff. Alcaraz acknowledged he had to run, fight, play his shots to down the opponent in 4 sets on grass, a helpful surface for the booming player. 'To be honest I was suffering in many games, 0-30, break points down. But proud to win in 4 sets.'
