Pahalgam attackers not locals; probably got shelter by ‘coercion': CM Omar Abdullah
'There was no local involvement in the Pahalgam incident. The people who shot and killed those 26 persons were all outsiders,' Mr. Abdullah, who attended a function to promote tourism in Gulmarg, said.
Referring to the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) recent arrests of two locals for harbouring the terrorists, Mr. Abdullah suggested that those arrested 'were forced to help under duress.'
'If they (locals) helped the attackers, it was not of their own will. Coercion in such situations cannot be ruled out,' he said.
The Chief Minister urged the NIA 'not to draw sweeping conclusions.' 'We must not allow the actions of a few foreign militants to paint our people as collaborators,' Mr. Abdullah said.
The NIA has arrested two locals, Parvaiz Ahmad Jothar and Bashir Ahmad Jothar, for their alleged role in providing shelter to the attackers in Pahalgam's Hill Park area.
Meanwhile, Mr. Abdullah again pressed for restoration of Statehood to J&K. Underlining that Statehood belonged to the people and not the politicians, Mr. Abdullah said. 'It's people's constitutional right. If statehood is restored, my government would not object in any way,' he added.

Mr. Abdullah said if elections are imperative to restore Statehood, his government will not shy away from approaching the Raj Bhawan to dissolve the Assembly. 'My legislators won't be coerced by using this threat of holding elections first,' he added.
He warned against 'misleading narratives on restoration of Statehood.' 'Don't attempt to intimidate us with scripted stories. Statehood is our right and not a bargaining chip,' the Chief Minister said.

2008 Malegaon blast case: NIA court says all charges against Prasad Purohit not baseless
Mumbai: The special NIA court clarified that sanction under Section 197 of the CrPC was not necessary for Lt Col Prasad Purohit, a government servant, under the circumstances of the case. The judge observed that the charges of ATS and NIA against Purohit were serious and based on the evidence they had collected during the course of investigation. The judge noted that Purohit's association with Abhinav Bharat Trust or Abhinav Bharat organization would not be per-say illegal and was the part of his. However, the judge said that those charges itself show that, he floated the Abhinav Bharat Organisation and was the founder member of Abhinav Bharat, collected huge funds and had control over the financial transactions. He has accepted the thousands of rupees from co-accused and utilised those amounts for private use, the judge noted. "Nothing material came on record to show that, all those allegations or charges were fake, baseless and all those acts are done by Purohit with the permission of his superior officer. "Those were serious, showing the involvement of Purohit and hence, their own officer had handed over the custody of accused to ATS. Ongoing through the papers, it is sufficient to hold that, the act done by him was not in discharge of his official duty. He has done those acts which were never permitted by his office. NIA charges 3 HuT operatives with plotting to promote outfit's ideology
(You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday said it had chargesheeted three members of Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT) in a conspiracy to propagate the banned terrorist group's ideology and raise funds for promoting its agency said the three - Kabeer Ahmed Aliya, Aziz Ahamed and Bava Bahrudeen - had been charged under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. It said the accused had entered into a criminal conspiracy with HuT office-bearers to establish an Islamic Caliphate in India by seeking military assistance from forces inimical to India, and enforce the constitution written by HuT's founder, Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani. Investigation revealed that the trio had also planned to secure support from the Pakistan Army through Haj and Umrah travellers, according to the accused were engaged in recruiting vulnerable youths to the secret classes of the HuT and were radicalised into the ideology of the international pan-Islamist group, which was banned, along with all its manifestations and front organisations, by India in October NIA said in a statement that the accused had also organised an exhibition showcasing the military might of Islamic nations such as Iran, Turkiye, Egypt and Pakistan, with the intention of inviting them to overthrow the lawfully established government of India through violent jihad and war.
