4 men from Murshidabad ‘beaten' up in Tamil Nadu for ‘speaking in Bangla'
According to the complaint, lodged on July 17, Sujan Sheikh, his brother Milan Sheikh, Sahil Sheikh, and Babu Sheikh had travelled to Chennai three weeks ago for construction work.
On the evening of July 15, they were in Thiruvallur when a group of people asked their names and where they were from. 'After hearing us speaking in Bangla, they started beating us with iron rods and lathis, suspecting us to be from Bangladesh,' read the complaint lodged by Sujan's father.
The four immediately returned to Murshidabad after getting primary treatment at a government medical college in Thiruvallur.
'They beat my two sons and two others only because they spoke in Bangla. They thought they were illegal Bangladeshis. My younger son's left hand was broken. After he arrived here, he underwent surgery. He is still admitted at the nursing home. My elder son is also injured. They will be on bed rest for several weeks,' Ashabul Sheikh, Sujan and Milan's father, told The Indian Express over the phone from Murshidabad.
Milan said, 'Locals beat us up after questioning our language. We were very scared. We did not even get our wages for 11 days of work. This was the first time we had gone to Chennai for work. I had to ask my father to send Rs 12,000 to get back home.'
Kolkata: TMC MLA from Itahar in Uttar Dinajpur has opened a helpdesk at Pater Sathi bus stand in his constituency to help the families of migrant workers who have been allegedly detained in other states.
'A large number of migrant workers from my area are being detained in Haryana. So we have opened a helpdesk. We are helping and guiding the families regarding the documents they need to show for residential proof. After verifying the documents, I am giving them residential certificates as an MLA. We are asking them to approach the cops for a police clearance certificate,' said MLA Mosaraf Hussen, who is also the chairman of the TMC's minority cell. The helpdesk began functioning on Wednesday, and will continue for a few more days from 7 am to 10 pm. ENS

Rs 16cr spent on drinking water survey in 2023 but report still under wraps
NEW DELHI: The government had conducted a survey of the quality of drinking water across cities in 2023 but didn't release the report or rankings after it abruptly cancelled the event scheduled for honouring the best performers in March 2025, just ahead of the last Lok Sabha elections. In a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha on Monday, the housing and urban affairs ministry said that Ipsos Research Pvt Ltd, an agency, was engaged during 2022-23 to conduct Pey Jal Survekshan in 485 AMRUT cities "at a cost of Rs 16.96 crore", of which Rs 16.1 crore has been released. Responding to whether the survey's findings have been released and govt has analysed the report for corrective measures, the ministry said, "The findings were communicated to the states/Union Territories at the workshop held on Nov 22, in New Delhi. During the workshop, discussions were held and states/UTs were advised to take corrective measures". The ministry not releasing the survey findings has remained a mystery considering that govt holds similar surveys across sectors to ensure "healthy competition" among states and cities. Interestingly, on Feb 27, 2024, months after the workshop with states and UTs, the ministry had issued a detailed press release announcing that the "first Pey Jal Survekshan Awards" would be held on March 5, with President Droupadi Murmu scheduled to preside over the event. It said that cities and states would be honoured for excellence in the water sector. In all, 130 awards were to be bestowed, reflecting the accomplishments of cities and states under different categories: gold, silver, and bronze.

Tailor killed daughter over ‘affair', died by suicide: Greater Noida Police
When Sharda, a helper at a private company in Greater Noida, prepared dinner on Sunday — a hearty meal of chicken curry and rice — for her husband and three children, she did not know this was the last time the family of five would be eating together. After dinner, all of them retreated to the terrace of their one-storey house in Sirsa village to sleep. When she woke up on Monday, around 6 am, she saw two bodies in one of the rooms on the ground floor — her husband, Ashok Kumar (45), was hanging from an iron rod and her 18-year-old daughter was lying dead on the floor. Police said Ashok, a tailor at a private firm, allegedly killed his daughter after he suspected her of having an affair and later hanged himself. Around 6.30 am on Monday, Sudhir Kumar, Additional DCP, Greater Noida, said police received a call on the 112 helpline that a man had died by suicide. 'A police team reached the spot and found a person hanging and the body of a woman nearby,' he said. 'When we spoke to the family members, we found that Ashok had killed his daughter over an affair and then died by suicide… The bodies have been sent for post-mortem and all aspects are being investigated,' said the Additional DCP. Dharmendra Shukla, SHO, Kasna Police Station, where the call was received, told The Indian Express that it was Ashok's brother, Hublal, who informed the police of the two deaths. 'We are still trying to figure out the exact cause of their deaths,' Shukla said. On Monday, Ashok's house wore a deserted look with a lock outside. With her two sons, aged 11 and 12, Sharda has shifted to her sister-in-law's house, a few metres away. 'Everything was going well for us. I do not know what happened between them late at night,' she told The Indian Express. 'We knew she had been talking to a man. My husband had, time and again, asked her to stop, but she did not listen. Last night, when we went to sleep, he had taken her phone,' she recalled. 'We had already found a match for her. It was a good family and they were placed well financially. We had planned her wedding after the monsoon…,' Sharda said, adding, 'She had told us she would only marry the man she liked and no one else…' Police said they have not received any complaint from the family members. A partnership that turned sour, a revenge plot: Inside robbery at ex-NSG commandant's Delhi home
Days after a retired NSG commandant was robbed at gunpoint at his home in Chawri Bazaar, police said four people, including a jewellery businessman, were arrested in the case. According to police, the businessman, Mohammad Kaif, was allegedly miffed after the 86-year-old victim, Bhim Sen — now a diamond and gems artisan — ended their business partnership. The other accused were identified as Aloknath Mishra, 35; Sohail Malik, 23; and Waseem, 48; police said. The incident took place on July 19 when Sen was at his house — which also doubles up as his office — along with his son Sandeep, daughter-in-law Neelam, and grandson. 'A man knocked on the door and called out the name of a family member. As soon as the door was opened, three masked assailants, armed with weapons, forced their way inside,' a police officer had said earlier. When the grandson resisted, one of the masked men took out a gun and tied his hands before taping his mouth, the officer had said. The intruders then looted jewellery and precious stones worth Rs 50 lakh, while also taking $3,550. They locked the family in the kitchen before fleeing. DCP (North) Raja Banthia said, 'Through sustained surveillance and intelligence analysis, it was established that three individuals were involved in the crime. These individuals were observed regrouping near Chawri Bazar Metro Station — two approached through nearby bylanes, while the third arrived in a TSR (three-wheeled scooter rickshaw) after deboarding a Metro train at Rajiv Chowk. Metro data later confirmed that this person had boarded the train from Noida City Centre.' A team led by Sub-Inspector Prashant found the TSR driver. 'The driver confirmed that he had picked up the individual from Connaught Place. The team found that the accused took another train back to Noida City Centre Metro station. He got off and drove away on a scooter,' the DCP said. The scooter was registered in the name of a junior engineer with the New Delhi Municipal Council, who lives in Noida. The engineer told the police that her scooter was being used by her driver, Aloknath Mishra. A trap was laid, and Mishra was arrested on Tuesday. 'Mishra admitted that the robbery had been orchestrated by Kaif as an act of revenge. Kaif hired Mishra, Sohail, and Waseem to execute the plan. Kaif was then arrested from his residence near Jama Masjid and Sohail was arrested from Mustafabad. They admitted that the proceeds of the robbery were with Waseem,' DCP Banthia said. Investigation showed that Waseem fled to Moradabad after the robbery and then went to Sambhal. He then booked a hotel in Roorkee, where he stayed for five days. 'Waseem kept his phone switched off most of the time, switching it on only for a few minutes daily — and always from a location away from his actual place of stay to mislead police. He hid the robbed jewels in Roorkee and was last tracked to Mussoorie,' Banthia said. A trap was laid at Library Chowk in Mussoorie, and the accused was arrested on July 27. Police have recovered the majority of the robbed amount. A police officer said Kaif started doing business with Sen in 2023, and has known him for 20 years. 'Kaif felt that Sen was visiting foreign countries and taking over his clients for his own business. This caused a monetary dispute between the two and led to a fallout,' the officer said.
