Angler used antique phone to catch fish, and that's illegal, Georgia cops say

Miami Herald7 hours ago
Illegal fishing reached a new level in rural Georgia when a man used an antique crank phone to electrocute fish, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
The discovery was made around 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, when two game wardens noted a man and woman acting suspiciously along a creek in Wilkes County, the DNR Law Enforcement Division reported in an Aug. 19 Facebook post.
'As (game wardens) approached, they observed the male subject moving away with a wooden box in his hands,' officials said in the post.
'As they got closer, the man threw the box into the creek. Sgt. (Matt) Garthright was able to retrieve the box from the creek and identified it as an outlawed fishing technique — an old crank telephone used to shock fish.'
The 29-year-old man is from Mississippi and was in Georgia for work, Garthright told McClatchy News in an email.
The two suspects were questioned and neither had valid fishing licenses, DNR officials said.
'They were given the opportunity to get in compliance by immediately purchasing fishing licenses online. The male subject was charged with shocking fish and the old crank telephone was confiscated,' the department reported.
Electricity is known to temporarily stun fish, causing them to float to the surface, experts say.
Crank telephones were among the earliest models of the telephone, with internal batteries and a crank 'used for signaling the operator or other directly connected telephones,' according to Antique Telephones.
Wilkes County is about a 110-mile drive east from Atlanta.

Travis Decker Manhunt: Police Share New Evidence in Daughters' Murders

Originally appeared on E! Online Authorities are sharing more information surrounding Travis Decker's case. Over two months after the bodies of his and ex-wife Whitney Decker's daughters Paityn, 9, Evelyn, 8, and Olivia, 5, were discovered at a campground in Leavenworth, Wash., police have linked the patriarch's DNA to the plastic bags used to kill the girls, whose causes of death were determined to be suffocation, per the autopsies completed by the Medical Examiner. 'Two of the victims each had two separate bags over their heads and the third victim had three separate bags over their head,' the Chelan County Sheriff's Office said in an Aug. 19 press release shared to Facebook. 'In addition, several cable ties were located on the ground in the immediate area of the bodies. These plastic bags and cable ties were collected that night by the Washington State Patrol Crime Response Team.' After sending this evidence for DNA analysis, authorities said that they believe Travis—who is wanted on first-degree charges of murder and kidnapping—is the 'only suspect involved in committing these homicides.' Regarding the cable ties found at the scene, the police department added, 'One DNA profile was obtained from the cable ties collected at the scene. That DNA sample matched the profile for Travis Decker. No other DNA profiles were obtained from the cable ties.' The sheriff's office, who has previously described Travis, 32, as "well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment,' also confirmed that their search efforts for the army veteran continue. Officers said a stolen blue Land Rover Discovery was used in the raid on a Spar shop in Elstead at 01:55 BST on 14 August. Surrey Police described the suspects as three men in dark clothing, wearing hats, gloves and balaclavas. The car then made off in the direction of The Mill pub. The force said the three suspects were linked to "some suspicious activity" on School Road in Rowledge an hour before the incident. Men targeted people in racially motivated paintball attacks, California cops say

Two men are accused of targeting people in racially motivated paintball attacks, California deputies say. A 22-year-old Highland man and 24-year-old Colton man were each arrested on a count of assault with a deadly weapon and a hate crime enhancement, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said in an Aug. 19 news release. McClatchy News is not naming the men as they have not been formally charged. Deputies said the men targeted multiple people in Bloomington and Fontana 'over the past few months.' The pair are accused of approaching in a Chevrolet Silverado truck, then firing paintballs at the people while screaming racial slurs, deputies said. The alleged attacks left the individuals with 'injuries to their faces and bodies,' deputies said. Deputies from the two city stations worked together and identified the two men as suspects, the sheriff's office said. After getting search warrants, deputies said they searched the two men's homes and found evidence that linked them to the alleged crimes. Each was booked into jail and released on bail, jail records show. In an Aug. 20 email to McClatchy News, a San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office spokesperson said they are 'aware of the incident,' adding that 'the case is pending review for filing decision.' Deputies said there may be additional victims and ask for anyone with information to contact them at 909-356-6767. Fontana is about a 50-mile drive east from Los Angeles.
