Third-Round Choice Vernon Broughton May Be Just What The Saints Needed For Their Defense

Yahoo09-05-2025
The New Orleans Saints used the first of their two third-round picks in the NFL Draft on Texas Longhorns defensive tackle Vernon Broughton.
Broughton was the seventh choice in the third round and the 71st overall selection. He was the 10th defensive tackle picked and the first of four consecutive defensive players that the Saints would draft.

New Orleans needs to fix a defense that ranked 30th overall last season, including a woeful 31st against the run. Here are the abilities that attracted the Saints to Broughton that might help do it.

The Longhorns won the recruiting battle for Broughton, a four-star recruit from Cypress Ridge High School in Texas. Between 2020 and 2022, Broughton would appear in 26 games as a reserve. Over that stretch, he had 1.5 sacks and 3 tackles for loss among his 14 total tackles.
By 2023, Broughton was a more active member of the Longhorns line rotation and had a sack to go with 5 tackles for loss. He was a starter last season and would respond with 4 sacks, 5 stops for loss, and 39 total tackles.

Despite a formidable build at 6'4" and 305-Lbs., Broughton doesn't always play with the necessary power required at an interior line position. He's been inconsistent against the run, too often getting buried or moved off point by double-teams.

A good athlete for his size, Broughton is still developing those traits. He'll need to expand his tools as a pass rusher and must also disengage more consistently to be involved in plays down the line.
Broughton gets almost instant penetration into opposing backfields because of his explosive burst at the snap. His constant upper body movement helps him set up counter moves and gives him several tools as a pass rusher.

Against the run, Broughton plays with very good leverage that helps him anchor against double-teams, especially with increased strength. Once he's able to disengage, his terrific lateral agility helps him make plays down the line of scrimmage. He also has surprising speed and closing burst to chase plays down from behind.

Bo Davis was the defensive line coach at Texas for three years while Broughton was with the Longhorns. Davis is the new defensive line coach of the Saints. Clearly, the familiarity between Davis and Broughton was a major factor in the choice.
Broughton must show that he can be a force inside against the run at the NFL level. However, he also has enough athletic skills and pass rush ability to play end in 3-man fronts that the Saints are expected to employ more often.

New Orleans desperately needed a big-bodied interior force, particularly against opposing rushing attacks. The familiarity between Bo Davis and Vernon Broughton could be an indication that the Saints believe they found just that player in Round 3 of this year's draft.

Chargers-Saints Winners/Losers

The Chargers beat the New Orleans Saints on Sunday afternoon 27-13 behind another strong defensive effort led by another group of young players. If this type of play continues into the regular season, Jesse Minter will most certainly not be with the Chargers much longer. But for now, we're enjoying his brilliance while it's still in Los Angeles. Here are three winners and two losers from Sunday's preseason victory! Winners CB Eric Rogers After fellow UDFA rookies Nikko Reed and Myles Purchase popped off in the Hall of Fame Game with an interception apiece, Eric Rogers went out against the Saints with something to prove. In arguably the best defensive performance by anyone on Sunday, Rogers picked off two different Saints quarterbacks and returned one for a 43-yard touchdown. Unfortunately the night did not end well for Rogers who wound up injured on a kickoff and had to be helped off the field by trainers. In the locker room after the game, Rogers was seen using crutches while receiving his well-deserved game ball from head coach Jim Harbaugh. EDGE Caleb Murphy Murphy has been on a hot streak through the first two preseason games for the Chargers. He began the Hall of Fame Game by assisting on the tackle that forced a turnover on the opening kickoff against the Lions and then followed up on Sunday with two sacks and nearly had a third one against the Saints. Being a menace in two of the three phases of football is a quick way to earn yourself a spot on the final 53-man roster and Murphy may have just sealed that outcome with two preseason games left this month. RB Raheim Sanders After an injury kept him out of training camp early, including sidelining him during the Hall of Fame Game, Sanders enjoyed a very strong first impression with his 42-yard, one-touchdown performance against the Saints on Sunday. As the game went on, Sanders and Haskins were the two main backs for the Chargers after Kimani Vidal started the outing. Haskins also ran strong, but it was Sanders who found the end zone when he baited the New Orleans safeties up the middle before bouncing to his right and beating everyone to the pylon. I'm fully expecting the Chargers to keep four true running backs on the roster, in addition to Scott Matlock if they continue that experiment for another full season. Haskins will make the team due to his special teams contributions which means it's up to Sanders or Vidal to win that final spot. Right now, I think those two are pretty close to each other with two preseason games to go. Losers RB Kimani Vidal Vidal got the start but did not end up playing all that much throughout the night. With a two-score lead held by the Chargers for most of the day, this was a good opportunity for the young backs to get more playing time. However, Vidal only earned six carries (tied third on the team with Haskins) and managed just 16 yards (2.7 average). Unless Vidal already has that last spot locked up, it did not make a ton of sense for him to lose out on snaps to both Haskins and Sanders. For that reason, I think Vidal is losing some ground to the aforementioned Sanders. QB Taylor Heinicke Heinicke did not play in the Hall of Fame Game in order for the coaching staff to get an extended look at Trey Lance. This past Sunday, Heinicke got the start but turned in a very porous 1-of-5 passing stat line for just eight yards with multiple passes sailing high and away from his targets. He did have one great pass to KeAndre Lambert-Smith over the middle on the opening drive but the rookie receiver dropped it. Due to his starting experience, I don't know if he's actually losing much ground to Lance. Mainly because Harbaugh may not want to bet the farm on Herbert staying healthy all season long and having the team's playoff hopes resting on Lance's inexperienced shoulders come Week 18. Heinicke's resume may keep him safe in the end, but right now he is definitely not the second best passer on the Chargers.

Why this Texas pair could become stars in 2025

Josh Pate previews the Longhorns' 2025 campaign and names two players to keep an eye on who could surprise for Texas this season. Subscribe to 'Josh Pate's College Football Show' on YouTube. View more Video Transcript Texas famously has pumped a lot of guys into the NFL. Uh, specifically on the interior of their defensive line. So back to back cycles, now they're having to backfill, and because they're so good at acquiring talent, they could do it last year. Marrod Watson, the transfer from Syracuse, has to be a linchpin there this year. It sounds like early returns he is, so they hit there. That's not surprising. I don't think Texas rolled the dice when they took him. So I love what we're hearing there. I love what we're hearing about Ryan Wingo. That's no, that's no like really really deep dive nugget for Texas fans. They know he's a superstar. The country doesn't know he's a superstar yet, and I really think if there's any name that explodes outside of Arch Manning, uh, maybe because of Arch Manning, it's Ryan Wingo, and Grayson Littleton's a name we keep hearing a lot about who is a former 3 star guy. And he's just worked his way into the rotation. It sounds like he's getting really meaningful reps when they're running nickel stuff, and so you may see him on the field, and the reason that's noteworthy is again because they open against Ohio State. So if I've got a young kid on the field, and I've got an alien at wide receiver in this case named Jeremiah Smith, and you're talking about matchups that could dictate that game. That's just something to keep an eye on. Close
