The overhaul of the Rangers defense will be on full display this upcoming season, with only two blueliners remaining from the defensive core that reached the Eastern Conference final twice in three seasons from 2022 to 2024.
It was an initiative that informally began around this time last summer, when president and general manager Chris Drury first attempted — and failed — to trade Jacob Trouba.

Drury then used the waiver wire as a 'threat,' according to the ex-captain, who ultimately approved a trade to Anaheim roughly two months into last season.
In came Urho Vaakanainen.

Messi and Alba set to join MLS All-Star Game — but will they show?

Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, two of Inter Miami's brightest stars, have been selected for the 2025 Major League Soccer All-Star Game, set to take place Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin. The All-Star squad will face off against a selection of Liga MX players in the league's annual midseason showcase. But after winning all but one match in its red-hot July, head coach Javier Mascherano is less than thrilled about the timing. 'The players are called up, I would like them to be able to rest, but that is not my decision,' Mascherano said earlier this week. 'I know how important the All-Star [Game] is.' Whether Messi or Alba will actually take the field in Austin remains uncertain. Both were absent from the first team practice on Monday, and All-Star head coach Nicolas Estévez, who also leads Austin FC, offered little clarity. 'That's a question for his club. I simply coach and manage the players they give me,' Estévez told media. 'I hope he [Messi] does come, because having the greatest player in history here is very important for everyone.' MLS rules state that any All-Star player who skips the game without a valid excuse faces a one-game suspension. That could sideline both Messi and Alba for Inter Miami's critical upcoming match against Eastern Conference leader FC Cincinnati on Saturday, July 26. There are only two ways around the rule: an official injury report or a league-granted exemption. With no such injury statements yet issued by Inter Miami, both players remain in limbo. That puts the club in a tight spot. On one hand, the game is a major marketing event for MLS, especially with Messi's name on top billing. On the other hand, Inter Miami is battling to stay competitive in the Eastern Conference and can hardly afford to lose two of their veteran leaders to a rules violation, or to a potential injury. The All-Star Game appearance would be Messi's first since joining the league, and fans across the country are hoping to catch a glimpse of the Argentine legend on a national stage. But given the stakes for Inter Miami and the players' absences from practice, it's far from a guarantee. As of Tuesday morning, neither Messi nor Alba had arrived in Austin, and the club has stayed quiet on the situation.

Longhorns lose incoming freshman as Gavin Fein signs first MLB deal

The Rangers have officially signed first-round Draft pick Gavin Fein, along with fourth-rounder Mason McConnaughey, fifth-rounder Ben Abeldt and 18th rounder Julius Sanchez The Texas Longhorns have lost one of their top incoming freshman to an MLB team. On Monday night, infielder Gavin Fein signed his first rookie contract. His decision came as no surprise, considering Fein was selected 12th overall in the MLB Draft a little more than a week ago. The Great Oak High School product has the skills to be one of the best players in his draft class. In Fein, the Rangers added one of the most talented high school bats in the country. For Team USA in the 18U World Cup qualifier in Panama, Fein shined with a pair of hits and RBIs. Just like he has done at every level, Fein was hard to keep off the base paths. As Fein has made headlines, scouts have been impressed with his bat speed and ability to produce line drives. While he struggled at times in the spring, he still has a very high ceiling. That could include more power as he develops in the minors. Over the past few days, multiple players with Longhorn ties have begun their professional careers. That includes Kaleb Freeman and Xavier Mitchell, both of whom will not make it to Austin. Mitchell signed with the Angels, and Freeman is taking his talents to the White Sox system. While finding a replacement for Fein will be no easy task, the Longhorns have been busy in the transfer portal this offseason. They will also have a few returning veterans to rely on, such as Dylan Volantis, who are eager to build on an SEC championship. As Fein begins his professional career, he will be a player to watch. The Longhorns had high hopes for what he could accomplish in Austin, just like the Rangers. If Fein becomes the player he is expected to be, the Rangers will have a potent bat to rely on for years to come.
