After Mumbra accident, state begins work on unified bus network for MMR
For the first time, authorities are mapping and consolidating routes run by various municipal transport undertakings—BEST, Thane Municipal Transport (TMT), Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT), Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Transport (KDMT), and others—across Greater Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Ambernath, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar and Ulhasnagar.
A special committee comprising senior officials from these municipal corporations and transport agencies has been formed and held its second meeting on Friday. The committee is tasked with drawing up a unified operational blueprint to streamline services, reduce duplication, improve frequency, and address long passenger wait times—especially on inter-city routes where different undertakings currently operate in silos.
Mapping, integration and route optimisation
'We are looking at three crucial aspects,' said SVR Srinivas, general manager of the Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking, which is playing a lead role in the initiative. 'The first is identifying all the bus routes in the MMR that connect Mumbai with neighbouring cities like Navi Mumbai and Thane. This will help prevent duplication and allow us to plan bus schedules in a coordinated manner.'
For instance, the BEST-operated AC-700 from Borivali to Thane via Mira Road overlaps with Route 65-AC operated by TMT. Under the unified framework, schedules will be synchronised to minimise wait times and optimise frequency across these overlapping corridors.
At present, passengers using intercity buses often wait 45–60 minutes between services, and multiple buses from different undertakings may ply the same route within minutes of each other—highlighting the inefficiencies of the current system.
The committee is collecting data on fleet strength, route networks, frequency (headway), and timetables. An integrated route map and master timetable are in the works.
One network, shared assets
Apart from synchronising bus schedules, the committee is also exploring shared use of infrastructure—such as depots, bus stations (especially near railway terminals), electric charging stations, and CNG refuelling points. There is also a plan to share best practices in maintenance and repair using new technologies.
Once a detailed analysis is complete, the committee will recommend fare rationalisation across services to ensure affordability and consistency for passengers travelling across municipal limits.
'In the current scenario, each undertaking plans independently. Our goal is to unify operations so that passengers benefit from a truly regional transport system,' said another senior official involved in the initiative.
A necessary shift beyond metro ambitions
Transport experts have long argued that while Mumbai's metro expansion grabs headlines, surface transport like buses plays an equally crucial role, especially in last-mile connectivity.
'At a time when the government is focused on building metro rail lines, there must also be a push to improve bus services,' said AV Shenoy, member of the Mumbai Mobility Forum. 'Integrated and frequent bus services can help ease pressure on suburban trains and serve as effective feeders to metro and railway stations.'

ONGC Q1 net profit drops 10 pc on lower oil prices
New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) State-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has reported a 10 per cent decline in its June quarter net profit on lower oil prices and stagnant production from its aging fields. The company reported a net profit of ₹ 8,024 crore in the first quarter of 2025-26 fiscal year, compared to ₹ 8,938 crore earning in the same period last year, a company statement said. The firm realised USD 67.87 for every barrel of crude oil it pumped out of ground and below seabed from sale to refiners, who convert it into fuels like petrol and diesel, as compared to USD 80.64 per barrel realisation in April-June 2024. Price of natural gas, which is used to generate electricity, produce fertiliser or turned into CNG and piped cooking gas, marginally rose to USD 6.64 per million British thermal units in Q1 from USD 6.5 in last year. ONGC said gas from new wells it drills is eligible for a 20 per cent premium over the government set price, called APM. "ONGC is actively working to boost output from such wells. In Q1 of 2025-26 (FY'26), revenue from new well gas stood at ₹ 1,703 crore, delivering an additional ₹ 333 crore compared to the APM gas price," the statement said. The company produced 4.683 million tonnes of crude oil in Q1, almost the same as last year's 4.629 million tonnes. Gas output too was almost unchanged at 4.846 billion cubic meters in the quarter. During the quarter, the firm made two discoveries of hydrocarbons in the Mumbai offshore. Other highlights of the quarter included commencement of production from the PY-3 field -- a joint venture of ONGC, Hardy Exploration & Production (India) Inc, and Invenire Petrodyne Ltd located offshore in the Cauvery Basin on the east coast of India. The field is producing 4,000 barrels of oil per day and 88,000 standard cubic meters a day of gas. Also, North Karanpura CBM block was put on production. "ONGC commenced the supply of treated natural gas from its newly established gas treatment facility at Palatana, Tripura on June 9. 2025. The gas is being supplied to the city gas distribution (CGD) network in the Gomati through GAIL, enhancing the region's access to cleaner fuel," the statement said. The firm said it has got special dispensation from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas for selling gas to Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd (RRVUNL) at USD 6.5 per mmBtu from Jodhpur. RRVUNL conveyed their consent for offtake of around 0.1 million standard cubic meters per day of gas using the existing GAIL gas pipeline. ONGC and its overseas subsidiary, ONGC Videsh signed an MOU for coordinated marketing functions. "This MoU is the first step towards enhancing operational synergy and optimizing marketing efficiencies for ONGC and its group companies."

BEST Earnings Go Up by a Crore Daily; Ridership Drops to 25 Lakh
Mumbai: The BEST announced on Monday that with a hike in BEST bus fares since May 9, the daily ticket earnings rose by a crore rupees—from Rs 2.25 crore to Rs 3.25 crore—but the ridership dropped to 25 lakh. In fact, the ridership fell drastically from 32 lakh prior to the fare hike in May to 25 lakh in August, sources said. Apart from ridership, the fleet of buses also dipped significantly, and this has gone below the pre-Covid level—from 3,500 buses in 2019 to 2,680 buses at present. Volunteers from the citizens' group Aamchi Mumbai Aamchi BEST said that the migration of bus commuters to share autos and share taxis was a primary cause of the drop in ridership over the past three months. The minimum bus fare was hiked from Rs 5 to Rs 10, while the minimum AC fare was increased from Rs 6 to Rs 12 in May. In comparison, the minimum share auto fare is Rs 10. "Several commuters, frustrated after waiting for buses for 40 minutes, do not mind switching to share autos at the same price from the railway station," said an AMAB volunteer. Similarly, the delay in the delivery of new electric AC buses on wet lease led to a drop in fleet size. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Victoria Principal Is Almost 75, See Her Now Reportingly Undo A transport analyst said: "The BEST signed two contracts totalling the procurement of 4,500 e-AC buses from a contractor and 250 from another contractor. Around 700 buses have been delivered, and the remaining are yet to arrive in the fleet. At the same time, it is phasing out old buses owned by the undertaking." The buses are being phased out as they have completed the lifespan of 15 years. This BEST-owned fleet dipped from 3,337 buses in 2019 to 419 at present. Volunteers of AMAB protested outside 22 bus depots on BEST's Foundation Day last week to demand a reduction in bus fares. "The staff, including drivers, should also improve their behaviour. I travel frequently, and I have noticed that the staff is rude. Drivers often brake suddenly, drive rashly, and jump signals. When we speak to them, they are abusive. This was totally unheard of in the past. In the past, they used to fear the public and apologise," Vora said. BEST's present fleet comprises 419 undertaking-owned buses and 2,269 buses on wet lease. The buses cover an average 160 km run per day, with the turnout being 85% to 90%. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
