Hearts have been broken by the devastating sight of a 15-year-old stray dog who wound up in a shelter—but then something unexpected happened.
When Sara Yoder, 25, isn't working as an elementary school teacher, she's changing lives in another way by volunteering at the Carson Animal Shelter in Los Angeles, California. She regularly sits with the dogs, comforts them, and captures footage to share on social media (@saranoellie on TikTok).
Among the many dogs she's recently highlighted was a senior dog who was found as a stray and taken to the shelter on June 24. Seeing this 15-year-old dog wind up in a kennel was a devastating sight, as Yoder told Newsweek that he looked "alone and weathered by time."
The dog is thought to be part Basset Hound, but Yoder wonders if he might have some Golden Retriever or Labrador in him. As a stray, he didn't have a name, leading one volunteer to jovially name him Fat Boy. But that didn't sit right with Yoder, who thinks he deserves something more respectful.

"His body tells a story of hardship and survival," Yoder said. "His fur is rough, his eyes tired, and his movements slow, as if life has never given him the gentleness he deserves."
She continued: "He is gentle, heartbreakingly so. A quiet, tender soul who moves slowly and carefully. He spent most of his days curled up on the cold concrete floor, barely lifting his head."
Upon arriving at the shelter, the senior dog was scanned for a microchip. To their surprise, he had one. He had clearly been someone's pet, but he found himself lying in a kennel, waiting to be noticed.
Yoder shared a video of the dog on TikTok and it went viral with over 392,200 views and 93,700 likes in a matter of days. The dog's sorrowful face captured attention online, as internet users were horrified at what happened to such an old pup.
The online response was astonishing, as numerous adopters and rescue groups contacted Yoder to offer their help. She told Newsweek that she's felt "overwhelmed with hope and gratitude" that so many people wanted to help this sweet dog find a loving home.
"So many people have opened their hearts and seen the same quiet potential in him. It's been deeply moving to witness strangers from all over rally around him, sending messages of kindness and sharing his story," Yoder said.
As the shelter worked out a solution for the dog, the unexpected happened—the dog's owner came forward. The owner claimed that the dog wandered away from his home and she was there to reclaim him.
The shelter offered to give the dog to a loving adopter, but the owner declined and was "was more than loving," and when they were reunited, the senior dog even "cried seeing his mom."
"While it's hard to let go after witnessing his vulnerability, we hope he's safe and surrounded by love. May his days be filled with soft beds, kind hands, and the peace every senior dog deserves," Yoder said.
"The love of a dog knows no bounds. We are hopeful he's happy in a familiar and loving home. His story is a reminder of the many paths we witness in shelters, some end in reunions, some in rescue, some come too late."
If this senior dog has shown anything, it's the power of rescuing. Yoder hopes that the online attention will inspire others to consider adopting a pet. For anyone who was moved by this dog's story, Yoder has one message: take action.
Whether it's fostering, adopting, volunteering, or simply sharing a video on social media. There are millions of animals in need of a home, and all they need is the right person to notice them.
The viral TikTok video of the dog has gained over 2,500 comments on TikTok already. One person wrote: "I really hope someone gets this baby."
Another TikTok user replied: "gosh he deserves to spend his time in a home in a soft bed."
While one commenter added: "oh no he's so heartbroken."

Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka dance at Centre Court and post about it on TikTok and Instagram
LONDON (AP) — Just in case anyone might have wondered whether there was any lingering animosity between Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka after their French Open final, the two tennis stars offered proof that all is well by dancing together at Wimbledon on Friday and posting videos on social media. 'TikTok dances always had a way of bringing people together,' Sabalenka wrote on her Instagram feed below a clip of the duo showing off their moves on the Centre Court grass to the strains of the 1990 hit 'Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now)' by C+C Music Factory. Gauff, a frequent TikTok user, put up a video of the pair standing outside the main stadium at the All England Club and mouthing along to a track with the words: 'OK, guys, we're back. Did you miss us? 'Cause we missed you.' Gauff wrote: 'the olive branch was extended and accepted! we're good so you guys should be too.' The No. 1-ranked Sabalenka and the No. 2-ranked Gauff held a practice session together at Centre Court ahead of the year's third Grand Slam tournament , which begins on Monday. Three weeks ago, Gauff beat Sabalenka 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-4 in the championship match at the last major, the French Open. Afterward, Sabalenka drew criticism from some for saying Gauff 'won the match not because she played incredible; just because I made all of those mistakes from ... easy balls.' Later, Sabalenka called her comments 'unprofessional' and said she had written to Gauff to apologize . Sabalenka, a 27-year-old from Belarus, is a three-time Grand Slam champion and was the runner-up both times Gauff, a 21-year-old American, won a major trophy, including at the 2023 U.S. Open . At Wimbledon this year, they only could face each other in the July 12 final. ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. Find his stories here: . More AP tennis:

Model with $10M legs risks losing precious limb to shark: ‘Literally inches from me'
These long legs would have been a mouthful. OnlyFans model Marie Temara — famed for her statuesque 6-foot-3-inch frame and legs valued at a staggering $10 million — narrowly avoided a catastrophic injury during a shark encounter in the Bahamas. 5 OnlyFans model Marie Temara nearly lot a limb to a shark while on vacation. Jam Press/@MarieTemara While vacationing in the waters of Compass Cay, a hotspot known for its nurse shark sightings, the Miami-based model, who towers 10 inches above the average US woman, captured a moment that shocked her and her viewers. Advertisement Perched on the edge of a small boat with one of her signature limbs dangling inches above the ocean, Temara playfully teased the water with her toe — blissfully unaware of the danger lurking below. In a now-viral video viewed over 629,000 times, three sharks suddenly emerged beneath her, gliding just inches from her bare foot. Despite the chilling proximity, Temata remained calm and even did a little shimmy. But behind her calm exterior was pure panic. Advertisement 'I almost lost a leg,' she confessed to her 2.8 million followers. 5 Compass Cay in the Bahamas is a hotspot known for its nurse shark sightings. Jam Press/@MarieTemara 'I knew there were sharks in the area, but I honestly didn't think they'd come that close. I was trying to stay cool, but inside I was screaming. Those sharks were literally inches from me.' The implications of such a loss were staggering. Marie earns $10 million annually from her modeling career, much of it directly tied to her long legs. She recently began exploring insurance options and consulted a firm in London that quoted her $100,000 per year to protect her most valuable assets. Jam Press/@MarieTemara 'My legs are so important to my career, and so it was lucky everything was ok,' she said. 'I make a lot of money from my height and my long legs. My legs are so important to my career, and so it was lucky everything was ok.' Thankfully, the sharks moved on without a bite, but the close call spooked Temara and her followers. Over the years, Temara has attracted lots of attention — and money — thanks to her long legs. Yet, she's actually the shortest in her family. 5 Compass Cay, a hotspot known for its nurse shark sightings, the Miami-based model shared. Jam Press/@MarieTemara The self-proclaimed tallest family on TikTok has gone viral online, with some clips amassing millions of views. Advertisement Temara comes from a long line of sky-high genes, with her mom standing at 6 feet, 5 inches tall, and her dad, like her, boasting a 6-foot-2-inch frame. Her brothers Shane, 26, and Troy, 24, are 6-feet-9 and 6-feet-10 respectively, making the youngest sibling the tallest. After losing her job as an accountant in 2020 and dealing with a breakup in 2021, the Florida resident started a TikTok account about her stature, amassing millions of views on her videos. After gaining more than 390,000 followers on the app, she turned to OnlyFans, sharing clips in which she flaunts her height by standing near or kicking over everyday objects. Advertisement Now, Temara said she makes 'what [she] used to make in a year in a month.' While, as she's previously admitted, it took her some time to embrace her height and accept that it's made it difficult to date, posting videos about being tall has helped. Temara says she hopes people who see her videos feel inspired to embrace their own bodies, gaining confidence in the process — particularly younger girls.
