Thaw in war but not travel: Tourists skip Himalayan belt, take south dive for holidays

Time of India14-05-2025

Lucknow: After the recent war-like atmosphere along the India-Pakistan border, travel patterns are witnessing a shift this vacation season. Tourists are staying away from the Himalayan belt, including Himachal Pradesh, Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir.
In contrast, southern destinations such as Munnar, Ooty, and Wayanad, as well as the scenic Kerala backwaters, are gaining popularity. Island getaways like Lakshadweep and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands are also witnessing a significant surge in tourist bookings. Tension between India and Pakistan in the wake of Pahalgam terror attack has resulted in a surge of cancellations and a marked drop in bookings across Himachal's popular destinations, including Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala. A managing director in a destination management company, Fuzail Ahmad, said, "There is a sharp drop in bookings after the recent border tensions. Many tourists cancelled their trips to the Himalayan destinations like Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. However, a number of travellers are now turning to popular South Indian spots like Munnar, Ooty and Wayanad, which are being seen as a safer option this vacation season."Gaurav Sharma, a Lucknow-based travel operator, said, "We've seen at least a 30–40% rise in inquiries for South Indian destinations in the last two weeks. Tourists are not willing to take chances with regions they perceive as unstable, even if those areas are actually safe. Perception is playing a big role this season."Ashwini Nagar, 39, a manager in a private firm, stated, "We were planning a family trip to Himachal in the upcoming vacation. But due to cross-border tension, we are dropping the plans."Rajveer Sonkar, 46, a businessman from Lucknow, said, "We only get time during this season as the schools of our children close for summer vacation, and my business also slows down. We planned our vacation in Kashmir this time, which we are shifting to Munnar now."Many tourists have cancelled their vacation plans altogether, citing safety concerns and uncertainty following the recent tensions. With the peak summer travel season underway, tourism stakeholders in the north are hoping for improved conditions, while southern states are preparing to welcome a larger share of holidaymakers.

Ayodhya Ram temple to roll out red carpet for Elon Musk's father

LUCKNOW: Billionaire Elon Musk's father, Errol Musk, a South Africa-based businessman, will visit the Ram temple in Ayodhya on Wednesday, June 4, officials confirmed on Monday. Errol Musk landed in Delhi on Sunday evening. The UP government is expected to accord him the status of state guest. Highly placed officials have confirmed Errol Musk's proposed visit. 'We are checking if the protocol accorded to a state guest will be extended to Musk during the visit,' a senior officer in Ayodhya said. Ayodhya district administration sources said senior officials are coordinating with Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to facilitate the temple 'darshan'. The senior Musk is on a five-day visit to India to hold business meetings with business people and entrepreneurs. The temple is part of his itinerary, and the gesture is seen as his attempt to appreciate India's cultural heritage better. An escort vehicle with security personnel is deputed to take the state guest around the city during his visit. Liaison officers accompanying the guest will include a sub-divisional magistrate, deputy police superintendent, or other gazetted rank officers. They will receive the guests at Ayodhya's Maharishi Valmiki International Airport in Ayodhya and escort them to various locations associated with the life of Lord Ram in the temple town. Meanwhile, the consecration ceremony of Ram Darbar, scheduled to be held on the first floor of the temple, will proceed as planned during Musk's visit.

Pune Airport beats own record with 212 flight ops in single day

On Sunday, June 1, Pune Airport set a new record of handling a total 212 flight operations in a single day, outdoing its own previous record of handling 208 flight operations in a single day on January 12 this year. This landmark figure included 106 departures and 106 arrivals, with over 36,000 passengers passing through the airport in a single day as they headed to both domestic and international destinations. Airport director Santosh Dhoke expressed enthusiasm over the development saying, 'The overall flight operations on Sunday were executed smoothly. This is a very positive sign for us, indicating the steady growth of air traffic movement at Pune Airport. It is the highest number of flight movements recorded in a single day in our history, and it reflects the growing connectivity and demand among passengers. With 35 domestic and three international destinations currently linked to Pune - including two flights to Dubai, two to Bangkok, and one to Singapore, the city is becoming a significant aviation hub.' Dhoke emphasised that the operations were conducted efficiently without any major issues or delays, contributing to a seamless travel experience for passengers. 'There was no hassle and no operational constraints, and flight delays were minimal. We are optimistic that this number will continue to rise in the near future, especially as more destinations get connected and the frequency of flights increases,' he said. According to information shared by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) Pune, the flight operations were conducted smoothly throughout the day from the Lohegaon-based Pune Airport. A total of 212 flights operated to and from 35 domestic and three international destinations. Of these, 106 flights arrived in Pune from major cities such as Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, and others, bringing in more than 18,000 passengers. The remaining 106 flights departed to various locations, carrying over 18,000 passengers to their respective destinations in India and abroad. Rohit Varma, an information technology (IT) professional and frequent flyer headed to Bengaluru, said, 'I travel frequently for work, and I've seen how Pune Airport has evolved over the past few years. But what I experienced on Sunday was truly impressive. Despite the large number of flights, the check-in process was smooth, security lines were well managed, and there were no delays. It was surprising to see so many flights operating seamlessly in one day. The addition of more destinations and international connections like Dubai and Singapore is a big plus for business travellers like me. It saves time and eliminates the need to travel to Mumbai for certain flights. Pune is definitely stepping up as a major travel hub.'
